Relationship between Impaired Fasting Glucose and Periodontal Health among Adults (성인의 공복혈당 수치에 따른 치주건강의 관련성)

  • This aim of this study is to assess the association of between glucose level and periodontal diseases in Korea adults. The data for analysis were obtained from Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2009. A total of 7,062 subjects who aged 19 years and above, underwent a medical and dental checkups. The prevalence of undiagnosed diabetes group was 27%, and the prevalence of impaired fasting glucose(IFG) group was 41.2%, diabetes group was 43.6% with periodontitis. IFG and diabetes had significantly higher prevalence of periodotontits compared to those having normal after adjusting confounding variables; the odds ratios were 1.35 (95% confidence interval: 1.17 to 1.55) and 1.27 (95% confidence interval: 1.02 to 1.58), respectively. This study has suggested that diabetes increases the risk of periodontal disease. Proactive, preventative dental and diabetes self care, as well as regular dental and diabetes assessment, are important management strategies for impaied fasting glucose and periodotnal health.

Validation of Korean Water Quality Standards to Hot Springs for Agreement with Legionella-Incidence Risk (레지오넬라균 출현위해도에 대한 현행 온천수 수질기준의 적합성 분석)

  • Observed trends in climate change, globalization and an aging population have an effect on public health conditions in Korea, prompting a reevaluation of current environmental regulations. In this study, we evaluated the performance of the total coliform (TC) standard, which is the only microbiological standard in the current regulation regime for hot spring water, by estimating correlation with the presence/absence of Legionella, a non-fecal opportunistic pathogen with heat-tolerance. Microbiological data in 7 studies that surveyed Legionella in hot spring waters were subjected to meta-analyses with the odds ratio (OR) as the effect size. The presence/absence of Legionella was significantly correlated to TC levels [OR = 3.1(1.5–6.4, 95% CI), p = 0.002]. Due to there being no direct explanation as to the reason for the occurrence of TC, mesophilic fecal bacteria, being coupled with Legionella presence, the mechanism of the correlation between the two kinds of bacteria was further investigated. Legionella presence was more prevalent with a high heterotrophic plate count [HPC; 4.0(2.2–7.2); p < 0.001] and water temperature [4.3(1.4–13.6), p = 0.011] when the temperature range was <40℃. However, it was reverse-correlated with water temperature when the temperature was >50℃ [0.2(0.1–0.4), p < 0.001]. Therefore, bacterial standing crops in hot spring waters appear to be determined by water temperature in general, and this forces TC and Legionella levels be correlated. In accordance with this relationship, HPC rather than TC reflect the levels of non-fecal contamination better. Therefore, employing HPC as the sole microbiological standard, or adding HPC into the current standard of hot spring water assessment, is suggested as a proactive measure to prevent health issues arising from contamination.

Analysis and Safety Assessment of Antioxidants Migrated from Polyethylene and Polypropylene Food Packaging Materials into Food Simulants (폴리에틸렌 및 폴리프로필렌 기구·용기·포장 유래 산화방지제 분석 및 안전성평가)

  • Antioxidants are used in the manufacturing of commercial food packages made of polyolefin plastic such as polyethylene and polypropylene for the purpose to delay the oxidation reaction of the polymer due to oxygen or traces of ozone in the atmosphere. Additives in plastics may be migrated from the packaging materials into foods, thereby presenting a potential health risk to the consumer. Therefore, it is necessary to determine migration level of antioxidants from food packaging materials to foodstuffs in order to take proactive management. In this study, we have developed a method for the analysis of 10 antioxidants, which are butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA), butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), Cyanox 2246, 425 and 1790, Irgafos 168, and Irganox 1010, 1330, 3114 and 1076, migrated from the food packaging materials into four food simulants for aqueous, acidic, alcoholic and fatty foods. The antioxidants were determined by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatograph-ultraviolet detector with 276 nm after solid-phase extraction with a hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB) cartridge or dilution with isopropanol. The analytical method showed a good linearity of coefficient ($R^2{\geq}0.99$), limits of detection (0.11~0.41 mg/L), and limits of quantification (0.34~1.24 mg/L). The recoveries of antioxidants spiked to four food simulants ranged from 71.3% to 109.4%. The migrated antioxidants in this study were within the safety levels that resulted from the safety assessment by the estimated daily intake to the tolerable daily intake.
