  • Prior research on Extended Reality (XR) has been a starting point for the development of the Metaverse. It is also a concern for researchers in the tourism field since it can enhance the tourist experience. Metaverse Tourism provides a virtual experience of the tourism destination for the users. It is potentially developed and predicted to be the future of tourism, enhancing the tourist experience through communication between humans and avatars and providing a new option for tourists to enjoy leisure activities. Recently, discussion on Metaverse tourism is still emerging, with some open talks from researchers in the intersections between information technology and tourism. This study extends prior studies by proposing six Metaverse tourism elements and categorizing them into core and supporting elements. Then, we analyze the consequences of those elements on the Tourism Experience Journey to enhance each stage with different characteristics. This study can contribute to continuing recent dialogues among scholars on how Metaverse can be applied in the tourism sector by proposing six elements that should be considered in developing and creating Metaverse services.

  • A surgical operation on a patient with infected left atrial myxoma is presented. The patient was a 50-year-old woman who was admitted to the Kyung Hee Medical Center Hospital on March 7 1987 with complaints of high fever, cough and dyspnea that occurred a few days prior to admission. She, who no definite history of the previous cardiac-related problems was obtained from, had visited a dentist to have her eight teeth pulled out a few months prior to this admission. A preoperative 2-D echocardiogram revealed a left atrial tumor, strongly suggesting myxoma and two blood cultures drawn prior to surgery yielded streptococcus viridans. Under the preoperative impression of an infected left atrial myxoma, the tumor was removed through a biatrial approach after establishing CPB and cold cardioplegic. Pathologic examination of the tumor demonstrated a typical myxoma with bacterial colonies within. Postoperative course was uneventful and she was completely well at discharge from the hospital. To our best knowledge, this report is the first surgical experience of infected left atrial myxoma in the Korean literature.

  • The concept of social entrepreneurship (SE) is gaining attention in developing economies for the purpose of greater societal welfare maximization. Still, findings in the field of SE studies have been riddled with conflicting results and counterstatement. Also, the determinants of developing SE are not robustly investigated in developing economies like Bangladesh. This context has mobilized the authors of this current study to focus on determining student's intention to pursue SE as their career choice. Hence, the study aims to examine the predictive determinants of social entrepreneurial intentions (SEI) among Bangladeshi students. The study has investigated the influence of entrepreneurial self-efficacy, social support, prior experience, and educational support on SEI. The survey was conducted from a public university of Bangladesh, and 231 students participated in the study. Questionnaire items under each construct variable have been adopted from pre-tested research studies. Five-point Likert scale questionnaire was applied to measure the variables. SPSS version 23.0 has been used for statistical analysis through which correlation and multiple regression analysis were conducted to measure the impact of the independent variables on SEI. Results exhibited that self-efficacy, social support, and educational support positively and significantly predicted SEI, while prior experience does not influence SEI.

  • Objectives: This study investigated associations between perceptions of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and the prevalence of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in workers at hospitals designated to treat COVID-19, as well as the difference in the magnitude of these associations by occupational type and previous Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) experience. Methods: The participants were workers at hospitals designated to treat COVID-19 who completed a questionnaire about their perceptions related to COVID-19, work experience during the previous MERS-CoV outbreak, and symptoms of PTSD ascertained by the PTSD Checklist for the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. Participants' characteristics were compared using the chi-square test. Multivariable logistic regression was performed to evaluate the associations between perceptions and the prevalence of PTSD, stratified by occupational type and previous MERS-CoV experience. Results: Non-medical personnel showed stronger associations with PTSD than medical personnel according to general fear (odds ratio [OR], 6.67; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.92 to 23.20), shortages of supplies (OR, 1.29; 95% CI, 1.07 to 1.56), and issue-specific fear (OR, 1.29; 95% CI, 1.05 to 1.59). Those with prior MERS-CoV quarantine experience were more prone to PTSD than those without such experience in terms of general fear (OR, 1.70; 95% CI, 1.22 to 2.37), shortages of supplies (OR, 1.24; 95% CI, 1.10 to 1.40), and issue-specific fear (OR, 1.21; 95% CI, 1.06 to 1.38). Conclusions: During the COVID-19 pandemic, non-medical personnel tended to have higher odds of being categorized as having PTSD. Workers with prior MERS-CoV experience were more susceptible than those without such experience. These findings suggest the need for timely interventions to manage human resources for a sustainable quarantine system.

  • In order to classify an satellite imagery into geospatial features of interest, the supervised classification needs to be trained to distinguish these features through training sampling. However, even though an imagery is classified, different results of classification could be generated according to operator's experience and expertise in training process. Users who practically exploit an classification result to their applications need the research accomplishment for the consistent result as well as the accuracy improvement. The experiment includes the classification results for training process used VITD polygons as a prior probability and training parameter, instead of manual sampling. As results, classification accuracy using VITD polygons as prior probabilities shows the highest results in several methods. The training using unsupervised classification with VITD have produced similar classification results as manual training and/or with prior probability.

  • Effect of prior deformation on the sliding wear of the ultra-fine grained (UFG) ferrite-martensite dual phase (DP) steel was investigated. The UFG DP steel was fabricated by the ECAP and subsequent intercritical annealing. The steel was cold rolled before the wear test, and the effect of the prior deformation on the wear was examined. The wear tests were carried out at various loads against a bearing steel ball. The wear rate of the UFG DP steel that did not experience the prior deformation was higher than that of the coarse-grained (CG) DP steel, because of more severe surface shear deformation. The wear rate of the specimens with prior deformation was much higher than that of the specimen without prior deformation. The deformed CG DP specimen showed higher rate than the deformed UFG DP specimen, and the rate-variation of the CG DP steel was much bigger under the same test condition.

  • Backgrounds/Aims: Biliary surgery in patients with extrahepatic portal vein obstruction with portal cavernoma (PC) is technically challenging, and associated with the risk of bleeding. Therefore, prior portal vein decompression is usually recommended before definitive biliary surgery. Only a few studies have so far reported the safety of isolated laparoscopic cholecystectomy. We aimed to evaluate our experience of laparoscopic cholecystectomy in patients with PC without prior portal decompression. Methods: Prospectively maintained data for patients with PC who underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy for symptomatic gallstone disease without portal decompression were analyzed. Clinical features, imaging, intraoperative factors, conversion rate, complications of surgery, and long-term outcomes were assessed. Results: Sixteen patients underwent cholecystectomy without portal decompression from 2012 to 2021, of which interventions 14 were laparoscopic cholecystectomies. One patient required conversion (7.1%) to open surgery. Jaundice was present in 5 patients (35.7%), and underwent endoscopic stone clearance before surgery. Median intraoperative blood loss, operative time, and hospital stay were 100 mL (20-400 mL), 105 min (60-220 min), and 2 days (1-7 days), respectively. Blood transfusion was required in two patients (14.2%). Prior endoscopic or percutaneous intervention was associated with significant blood loss and prolonged intraoperative time. Conclusions: In centers with experience, prior portal decompression can be avoided in patients with PC requiring isolated cholecystectomy to treat gallstones or their complications. Laparoscopic surgery is safe and feasible for these patients, and gives excellent outcomes in the selected group.

  • Although research on Virtual Reality (VR) has uncovered numerous technical advantages of VR over traditional media, little is known about how individual VR users with varying prior experience respond to VR differently. This paper examines the effect of users' prior VR experience on their subsequent real-life behavior in the domain of charitable consumption. Specifically, we find that compared to experienced VR users, novice VR users are more likely to support a charitable cause in real life (e.g., ocean conservation) after experiencing this cause in VR. The increased support among novice VR users occurs because they perceive the use of VR to be more novel. We find a boundary of this effect such that when VR is used to promote a noncharitable cause, novice VR users no longer increase their real-life support after VR. This research offers new possibilities for future studies on the use of VR in societal marketing.

  • The primary objective of this study is to design input methods for assisting button selection tasks on a PDA screen. Familiar methods in the existing computing environments were investigated to develop aiding methods. Factors manipulated in the experiment included aiding method, button size, and users' prior experience with PDAs. A total of sixteen participants examined the usability of button selection tasks. Two types of button selection tasks were used as experimental tasks; one was selecting a target button, and the other was selecting multiple target buttons consecutively. The results showed that the aiding method and the button size had significant effects on the subjective satisfaction as well as the performance. In addition, users' prior experience with PDAs affected the performance significantly. The interaction between the aiding method and the button size was found to have significant effects on the performance. However, the interaction effect between the button size and the PDA experience was significant on the task performance time only for the multiple button selection tasks. Design considerations were proposed based on the experimental results. These can be applied to the PDA interaction design to make the PDAs more usable.
