Virtual Reality and 3D Printing for Craniopagus Surgery

  • Purpose Surgery for separating craniopagus twins involves many critical issues owing to complex anatomical features. We demonstrate a 3D printed model and virtual reality (VR) technologies that could provide valuable benefits for surgical planning and simulation, which would improve the visualization and perception during craniopagus surgery. Material & Methods We printed a 3D model extracted from CT images of craniopagus patients using segmentation software developed in-house. Then, we imported the 3D model to create the VR environment using 3D simulation software (Unity, Unity Technologies, CA). We utilized the HTC Vive (HTC & Valve Corp) head-mount-display for the VR simulation. Results We obtained the 3D printed model of craniopagus patients and imported the model to a VR environment. Manipulating the model in VR was possible, and the 3D model in the VR environment enhanced the application of user-friendly 3D modeling in surgery for craniopagus twins. Conclusion The use of the 3D printed model and VR has helped understand complicated anatomical structures of craniopagus patients and has made communicating with other medical surgeons in the field much easier. Further, interacting with the 3D model is possible in VR, which enhances the understanding of the craniopagus surgery as well as the success rate of separation surgery while providing useful information on diagnosing and surgery planning.

  • Printed electronics is a technology used for forming electronic circuits or devices, and it is used in the manufacture of many products such as RFID tags, solar cells, and flexible display panels with a much lower cost than in the case of semiconductor process technology. Web-guide-type printing such as roll-to-roll printing is a method used to produce printed electronic devices in a large volume. To commercialize such products, highly precise alignment between printed layers is required. In this study, a highly precise alignment system is proposed, and some experimental results are compared with those obtained using a laser surface vibrometer to illustrate the reliability of the proposed system. The robustness of the proposed system to web deformation is also considered experimentally.

Evaluation of the accuracy of dental casts manufactured with 3D printing technique in the All-on-4 treatment concept

  • PURPOSE. The aim of this study is to compare the casts obtained by using conventional techniques and liquid crystal display (LCD) three-dimensional (3D) print techniques in the All-on-4 treatment concept of the edentulous mandibular jaw. MATERIALS AND METHODS. In this study, a completely edentulous mandibular acrylic cast (typodont) with bone-level implants placed with the Allon-4 technique served as a reference cast. In this typodont, impressions were taken with the conventional technique and dental stone casts were obtained. In addition, after scanning the acrylic cast in a dental laboratory scanner and obtaining the Standard Tessellation Language (STL) data, 3D printed casts were manufactured with a 3D printing device based on the design. The stone and 3D printed casts were scanned in the laboratory scanner and STL data were obtained, and then the interimplant distances were measured using Geomagic Control X v2020 (3D Systems, Rock Hill, SC, USA) analysis software (n = 60). The obtained data were statistically evaluated with one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's pairwise comparison tests. RESULTS. As a result of the one-way ANOVA test, it was determined that the stone casts, 3D printed casts, and reference cast values in all distance intervals conformed to the normal distribution and these values had a significant difference among them in all distance intervals. In Tukey pairwise comparison test, significant differences were found between casts at all distance intervals. In all analyses, the level of significance was determined as .05. CONCLUSION. 3D printed casts obtained with a 3D LCD printing device can be an alternative to stone casts when implants are placed in edentulous jaws. [J Adv Prosthodont 2022;14:379-87]

  • We investigated on the sintering behaviors and electrical properties of photo-sensitive aluminum (Al) electrode materials in plasma display panels. General characteristics of Al electrodes was totally different to that of conventional Ag materials; resistivity was decreased with the increasing of metal particle sizes and the amount of frit content and there is almost no width difference between developed and fired electrodes layers. Microstructures of fired electrodes revealed that Al electrodes had different mechanism on necking between metal particles and making electrical conducting path. Chemical durability (especially, antialkalinity) and adhesion of Al electrodes must be carefully controlled. Nevertheless there are difficulties of processing Al electrodes, we developed and optimized photo-sensitive Al materials as address electrodes without any changes of existing patterning equipment and sintering conditions.

  • The ultraviolet-C emitting praseodymium doped yttrium phosphate (YPO4:Pr3+) powder was synthesized by conventional solid-state reaction. The electroluminescence device was fabricated by simple screen-printing method using the synthesized YPO4:Pr3+ powder, especially, polyvinylidene fluoride as an insulating layer was applied on the printed YPO4:Pr3+ powder for stable performance of the electroluminescence. The electroluminescence properties were investigated under alternating current power system of 400 Hz. The device starts to emit at 350 V, which showed the ultraviolet-C emission peaking at the 233, 245, 264, 273 nm attributed to electronic transition of the Pr3+ ions. The electroluminescence intensity was increased as increasing the operating voltage and the device revealed stable performance up to 600 V due to the polyvinylidene fluoride serve as a protective layer.

  • The metal films ink-jetted using the conductive ink based on a mixture of copper and silver nanoparticles were investigated. The porosity and resistivity of films were minimized by adjusting the mixing ratio of Cu and Ag nanoparticles. We demonstrated that the printed tracks with good conductivity could be obtained at sufficiently lower annealing temperatures where plastic substrates could be used.

  • We have studied ink-jet printing method for patterning of conductive line on flexible plastic substrates. Synthesized copper nano-particles of ${\sim}40\;nm$ were used for the conductive ink and the printed patterns exhibit a smooth line whose line width is about $100\;{\mu}m$.

  • This paper repors on low temperature sealing process of PDP using binder and capping glass. The exhausting hole on rear glass of PDP was sealed by capping glass using screen-printed binder without exhausting glass tube. Based on the tubeless packaging process, out gassing problem could be reduced and vacuum conductance could be improved by eliminating exhaust tube.

  • 본 논문에서는 인쇄체 아라비아 숫자를 인식하기 위해 가중 템플릿 정합 방법을 제안한다. 가중 템플릿 정합은 패턴의 특징이 나타나는 영역에 해밍거리(Hamming Distance) 의 가중치를 두어 패턴 특징을 강조하여 숫자 패턴의 인식률을 높이는 것이다. 또한 패턴의 표면을 울퉁불퉁한 영상으로 만드는 한 두 픽셀의 랜덤 노이즈를 제거하기 위하여 본 연구에서는 트리밍(trimming) 기법을 적용하였다. 실험에서는 트리밍을 하지 않고 단순 템플릿 정합을 사용했을 때의 혼돈 행렬(confusion matrix)과 트리밍을 한 후 가중 템플릿 정합을 사용했을 때 혼돈 행렬을 서로 비교해 인식률이 크게 향상된 것을 보인다.
