In this study, image analysis and surface roughness measurements using an optical microscope are presented as a method to quantitatively evaluate the results of screen printing. Using this method, the squeegee speed, which is the printing process condition, and the printability of the electrode according to the screen mesh were evaluated. Increasing the squeegee speed in the printing process acts as a process element that increases the line width precision of the printed electrode and lowers the surface roughness of the printed surface. Furthermore, the edge roughness, which indicates the clarity of printing, was not significantly affected by the speed of the squeegee during printing. The print thickness increases in proportion to the squeegee speed, but is largely dependent on the screen thickness.

This study is about the effect from properties of coated paper and ink dispersion to the printed mottle. Ink receptivity would be expected that it is mainly effected by roughness of coated paper Because the transfer of ink can not be uniform with rough surface, it will cause the optical appearance such like printed mottle. And also it may be able to cause the printed mottle from uneven transfer of ink due to absorption property of based paper, depend on size degree, by using dampening in Off-set printing. Each different specific of surface and ink dispersion could cause printed mottle. Therefore this study was carried out by using densitometer and image analysis to show the interaction between properties of domestic coated paper and ink dispersion.

This study was carried out in order to investigate the effect of pigment properties in a pre-coating layer on the characteristics of a top-coating layer and the print mottle of the coated paper. Five different pigments were applied for this study as raw materials for the pre-coating layer. The properties and print mottle of the coated paper samples were evaluated according to the coating color formulation. Type of pigments appliied in a pre-coating layer was one of the most important factor to control the properties of pre and top coating layer. Surface properties of pre and top coated paper were improved by blending GCC which had smaller particle size, with clay. Properties of a top-coating layer was affected by the pigment properties used in the pre-coating layer. It was found that print mottle of coated paper can be improved by replacing part of GCC with smaller particle size GCC or clay in pre-coating layer.

This study was carried out to elucidate the potential in substitution of SB latex with eco-friendly starch based bio-binder as a coating binder. The part of SB latex in coating color of pre- and top layer was substituted with starch based bio-binder in order to evaluate the characteristics of coating color and coated paper, and printability. The viscosity and water retention of coating color were increased by substitution of SB latex with starch based bio-binder. Roughness of coated paper was increased by substitution with starch based bio-binder, although there was not significant changes in roughness when SB latex is used as a binder in pre-coating color. Brightness and whiteness of coated paper were not affected, but opacity and print mottle were improved by substitution with starch based bio-binder. The interesting result observed was that dry-pick did not affected significantly, and ink set-off was improved by starch based bio-binder. It is expected that starch based bio-binder can be commercialized if the systematic further research works are carried out.

Offset printing is one of the well known printing technique of lithographic process and consists of image area and 'non-image area on a flat image carrier. The surface tension of dampening water can be controlled by adding IPA after mixing of raw water and etching solution. The etching solution contains a surfactant for reducing surface energy, a clean agent for non-imaging area, wetting agent for protecting non-imaging area from oil components like ink and also an emulsifying agent for controlling emulsification. In this study, the present situation of dampening water maintenance has examined by collecting dampening water using at domestic companies. The pH related to dampening water, conductivity, contact angle, emulsification curve are measured to define the current situation of dampening water control of each companies and to analyze the relationship among measured properties. In the study most of companies among 16 printing companies tested controlling dampening water through pH value. However, the quality of printing has varied depending upon conductivity, contact angle, IPA content, and emulsification value. The control of dampening water should be carry at the state of the standard when adding proper ratio of etching solution. It would be more effective when pH or conductivity control carries out in parallel with controlling dampening water. Therefore the concept that pH5.5 is correct is based concept. Based on these initial tests it is defined that the standardization of dampening water control is required.

We have manufactured Ag pastes for gravure printing by adding different solvent contents. Then the gravure printability and properties of conductive patterns gravure-printed by the different rheology characteristics of pastes were investigated. The dispersity of pastes was increased and the viscosity and shear rate dependence of viscosity for pastes were decreased by increasing the solvent content. Also storage modulus G', loss modulus G" and angular frequency value when G" starts to be bigger than G' of pastes were increased by decreasing the solvent content. These mean a flow drop of paste. As a result of gravure printing using two plates which have different line counts(175line and 350line), conductive patterns printed using 175line were spreaded more but Ag packing, thickness and conductivity of the conductive patterns were better than those printed using 350line. And the spread values of conductive patterns were increased with solvent contents but the best properties for Ag packing, surface roughness and conductivity of the conductive pattern were obtained by paste (3) which has 550cps of viscosity at $100s^{-1}$ and tan ${\delta}$ > 1 at 10rad/s. As a result of gravure printing using 350 line plate and paste (3), the conductive pattern has $1.2{\mu}m$ of film thickness and $1.9{\times}10^{-5}{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$ of conductivity.
We prepared polyester-polyamines to improve the effect of carbon black dispersibility for use in thermal transfer ink, and synthesized polymeric dispersing agents by two-step reactions. In the first step, we made polyester by polycondensing 1,6-hexanediol and adipic acid. The resulting polymers had carboxylic acid, which was linked with polyamine via an acid-base reaction. We then characterized the polyester-polyamine structure by NMR spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). We also determined the basic characterizations such as total acid numbers (TAN) (5.0-67.5 mgKOH/g), hydroxyl values (27.1-67.5 mgKOH/g), and molar masses ($M_n=1.6-8.4kg\;mol^{-1}$) for the polyester and total base numbers (TBN) (15.3-57.1 mgKOH/g), hydroxyl values (33.0-79.8 mgKOH/g), and nitrogen contents (1.02-3.48%) for the polyester-polyamine polymers. We thus prepared thermal transfer ink using carbon blacks and the polyester-polyamine dispersing agents, and evaluated the resulting mixtures for printability, adhesive force, storage stability, ink appearance, ink gloss, and processability. These mixtures showed significant dispersibility for carbon black in the ink. Thus, we concluded that the dispersibility of the polymeric materials depended on the polyamine structure and the hydrophilicity-hydrophobicity distribution of the polymeric dispersants.

Increasing the filler content of sheet improves the optical properties and printability of paper and provides an opportunity for saving production cost through fiber replacement with relatively low-priced filler. But increasing the filler content tends to decrease the strength of paper and filler retention. It also tends to deteriorate drainage on the paper machine. To overcome these problems, preflocculation technology of fillers may be employed. Many research efforts have been made on the properties of preflocculated filler, namely prefloc, whose size and size distribution were influenced by polymer type and shear level. But there is much to be investigated about the effect of the prefloc characteristics on the physical properties of paper. To evaluate the effect cationic polymers on the size and size distribution of preflocculated GCC and their shear stability, cationic PAM and cationic starch were used. The influence of the preflocculation on filler retention and its surface distribution, and the changes of physical and optical properties of handsheets affected by the characteristics of preflocs were examined. Filler distribution on sheet surface was also analyzed by EPMA. Results showed that cationic PAM formed large preflocs at low dosage. Cationic starch was required to add 15 times as much as cationic PAM to obtain the preflocs with similar size. But preflocs formed with cationic starch was superior in shear stability to those formed with cationic PAM. Filler preflocculation technology could provide an opportunity of increasing filler content significantly without loss in tensile strength. And increased filler contents could compensate brightness loss which often accompanies filler preflocculation. When excessively large preflocs were used, however, brightness loss rather than the improvement in tensile strength was predominant. Therefore it is of great importance to produce preflocs with proper size and shear stability for maximizing the improvement of physical properties of papers.

Today's requirements for print-press runnability and print quality demand an optimised absorption and adhesion of printing ink on the paper surface. Modern coating concepts for high glossing offset grades use ultra fine pigments, whereas binder level has continuously been decreased to a minimum in recent years to achieve the highest possible sheet gloss development and for economical reasons. Both the ultra fine pigments and the reduced binder levels lead in many cases to a faster ink setting rate. On the other hand, matt paper grades use relatively coarse pigments leading to a slow ink setting compared to the high glossing papers. Both too fast and too slow ink setting properties implicate drawbacks in print quality and print press runnability. The mechanisms behind the interactions between ink and coating have been presented in many previous publications. The purpose of this study was to determine and quantify how the ink setting rate is influenced by pigment system (GCC and GCC/clay blends), latex level and latex properties in the topcoat of double coated sheet fed offset paper. The roles of binder level and type in the precoat were also assessed. The effect of calendering (temperature and pressure) was studied with one formulation. The resulting ink setting characteristics were tested using three different laboratory testing instruments. The correlation amongst the different laboratory testing methods is discussed. The results show that by varying the latex properties, the pigment system and/or latex addition level, the ink tack development of ink applied to a topcoat pigment system can be significantly influenced. It can be slowed down as often desired with ultra fine pigments or speeded up in the case of coarse pigments. There was no visible effect on the ink setting rate by using different binder systems in the precoat..

The water retention of coating colors can be accurately measured by devices such as an AA-GWR water retention meter whose principle of measurement Is based on pressure filtration of coatings under an externally applied air pressure over a certain period of time. It was hypothesized that such devices could be also used to determine the immobilization solids (IMS) of coating colors by determining a sudden drop in the rate of dewatering, that is, a sudden change in the drainage curves. To test this hypothesis, the immobilization solids of coating colors containing various thickeners and water retention additives at different levels were first accurately measured by a modified immobilization tester based on the well-known gloss drop method, and then their values were compared with those obtained by an AA-GWR water retention tester. They agreed very well and showed that the standard deviation is only 0.14% in the IMS points between both methods. This good agreement was not surprising because both test methods are based on the same end-point, that is, the immobilization solids point at which menisci begin to form at the coating surface. Theoretical considerations supporting this new method for measuring the immobilization solids of coating colors are presented and some recommendations for the test method are discussed. Also, the effect of various thickeners and water retention additives on the properties and printability of coated papers is discussed.
