The objective of this work is to investigate the effects of diminished primary coolant inventory and the presence of noncondensible gas during single- and two-phase natural circulation in a PWR loop model. The test model was composed of two loops with a U-tube heat exchanger in each loop. Through a series of tests, it has been confirmed that the two-phase natural circulation flow rates were greatly dependent on primary coolant inventory as previous investigators observed. The primary coolant inventory limit to maintain two-phase natural circulation was found to be the amount of the coolant necessary to keep the waterline of the coolant nozzle hole center in this model. The presence of noncondensible gas impede the single-phase natural circulation, but it did not affect the two-phase natural circulation significantly.
Toshiba has developed a laser peening system for PWRs(pressurized water reactors) as well after the one for BWRs(boiling water reactors), and applied it for BMI(bottom-mounted instrumentation) nozzles, core deluge line nozzles and primary water inlet nozzles of Ikata Unit 1 and 2 of Shikoku Electric Power Company since 2004, which are Japanese operating PWR power plants. Laser pulses were delivered through twin optical fibers and irradiated on two portions in parallel to reduce operation time. For BMI nozzles, we developed a tiny irradiation head for small tubes and we peened the inner surface around J-groove welds after laser ultrasonic testing (LUT) as the remote inspection, and we peened the outer surface and the weld for Ikata Unit 2 supplementary. For core deluge line nozzles and primary water inlet nozzles, we peened the inner surface of the dissimilar metal welding, which is of nickel base alloy, joining a safe end and a low alloy metal nozzle. In this paper, the development and the actual application of the laser peening system for PWR power plants will be described.

Jet pump in automotive fuel tank module is used to deliver fuel to fuel pump so that the pump is operated without aeration in suction side. In this study, three dimensional simulation model of jet pump is developed to understand performance variation over design parameters. Performance of jet pump is also investigated experimentally in terms of operating pressures. The experimental data is used to verify the three dimensional simulation model of jet pump. Verification results show that the three dimensional simulation model of jet pump is about 1% error with experiment. The simulations are conducted in terms of throat ratio and primary flow induction angle. As the throat ratio is increased, the flux ratio is trade-off at 3 times of throat diameter. On the other hand, as primary flow induction angle is increased, vapor pressure inside the nozzle is decreased. In summary, the results show that liquid jet pump has to be optimized over design parameters. Additionally, high velocity of induced flow is able to evolve cavitation phenomena inside the jet pump.
The paper describes a study of the variation of the NO production emitted from turbulent propane flames established on a practical combustor where a primary and a secondary fuel lines are installed. The flowrate of the secondary fuel is pulsated or added in addition to that of the primary fuel which constrantly flows to the nozzle of the burner. Two modes depending on the positions of supplying the secondary fuel are performed; one is for its position to be placed at the center of the primary fuel tube and the other around the stabilization baffle. The mean concentrations of gas species, $O_2,\;Co\;CO_2,\;NO$, and HC(unburnt hydrocarbones) have been measured at the exit of the combustor. As equivalence ration $({\Phi})$ is increased the profile of the NO concentration on the latter mode rises slowly less than that on the former one. In the range of ${\Phi}=0.5$ to 0.54 the NO production is reduced by about 35% more on the latter mode than on the former one. The influence of pulsating the secondary fuel on the variation of the NO concentration doesn't appear at both modes.

For the purpose of a cost effective design of practical subsoni $c^ersonic ejector systems, an experiment was carried out using a superheated steam as a primary driving flow. The superheated steam jet was produced by several different kinds of subsonic and supersonic nozzles. The secondary flow of atmospheric air inside a plenum chamber was drawn into the primary steam jet. The vacuum performance of the plenum chamber was investigated for a wide range of the ejector operation pressure ratio. The result showed that the static pressure of the mixed flow at the ejector throat is only a function of the ejector operation pressure ratio, regardless of the primary nozzle type employed.ed.
In order to investigate the operating characteristics of a supersonic steam ejector, the axisymmetric, compressible, Reynolds-averaged, Navier-Stokes computations are performed using a finite volume method. The secondary and back pressures of the ejector system with a second throat are changed to investigate their effects on the suction mass flow. Three operation modes of the steam ejector system, the critical mode, subcritical mode and back flow mode, are discussed to predict the critical suction mass flow. The present computations are validated with some experimental results. The secondary and back pressures of the supersonic steam ejector significantly affect the critical suction mass flow. The present computations predict the experimented critical mass flow with fairly good accuracy. A good correlation is obtained for the critical suction mass flow. The present results show that provided the primary nozzle configuration and secondary pressure are known, we can predict the critical mass flow with good accuracy.

Fracture mechanics analysis (FMA) is an essential work for integrity evaluation of nuclear power plant. The flaws inspected by In-Service Inspection(ISI) should be confirmed by FMA for the decision of the operation status of stop or continuance. The basic data for FMA are the stress of the interested area. The purpose of this research is to develop a system which can obtain stress data efficiently based on various database. Mesh generation program generates mesh using MSC/PATRAN and provides input file for finite element analysis according to the databases (shape, dimension, transient and material). The stress data from the finite element analysis are stored to be stress database so that it can be applied to FMA. As an example, the system developed by this study is applied to pressurizer nozzle and confirmed to be a useful tool for efficient FMA.
In this paper, results of simulational round robin test on residual stress prediction was provided. Welding residual stress is one of the reasons for primary water stress corrosion cracking in PWR. Therefore, quantifying the welding variables and defining the recommendation for prediction welding residual stress is important. Through the round robin test, it is known that compressive axial and hoop residual stress occurs in dissimilar metal weld and pre-existing residual stress distribution in dissimilar metal weld was affected by similar metal weld due to short length of safe end.
A tenter is very important to dry and heat-set fabrics in textile dyeing and finishing industry. However, the tenter machine typically utilizes more than 80% of all the power in dyeing system, and yet is one of the primary machine which affects quality of fabrics. Therefore, performance optimization of the tenter machine is required to reduce energy consumption and enhance quality of fabrics. To optimize the tenter machine, it is important to maintain the uniform flow rate, which can be obtained by optimizing a nozzle geometry. In this study, emboss hole angle was investigated as main parameter in flow rate uniformity and heat flux efficiency. The analysis results were compared with those acquired from bench-scale dryer test in the laboratory. The tenter machine performance simulated by Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) was optimized by controlling emboss hole angle.

An experimental study has been conducted to investigate the effects of a multi air-staged burner on NOx formation and heat transfer in a 15kW large-scale laboratory furnace adopted the reburning process. The reburn fuel as well as burnout air was injected from each nozzle attached at the wall of the cylindrical furnace. Fuel in both main burner and reburn nozzle was LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas). The paper reports the influences on NOx reduction of reburn fuel fraction in reburning zone. Temperature distribution inside the overall region as well as total heat flux at the wall of the furnace has been measured to examine the heat transfer characteristics due to the reburning process. For comparison, the reburning effects were examined for a combustor with two types of burner; a regular single staged burner and a multi-air staged burner. A gas analysis was also performed to evaluate an appropriate condition for NOx emission in a primary zone for the excess air ratio of 1.1. As a result, combustion efficiency expected to become more efficient due to the reduction of heat loss in burnout zone decrease when multi air-staged burner in furnace adopted reburning technology was used.
