  • Experiments were carried out to evaluate performance of the cold air distribution systems with an ice storage tank in test room. Cold air distribution systems provide primary air for comfort conditioning or process cooling at coil discharge temperatures$4^{\circ}C$ to$11^{\circ}C$. The application of a cold air distribution system allows for the downsizing of air distribution equipment and central plant equipment when ice storage tank is used. The benefit of a cold air distribution system include a decrease in the floor-to-floor height, increase floor space, reduced building capital costs, reduced energy use and demand. The use of cold air distribution can result in the most cost effective system and is currently being implemented world wise as the new standard in air conditioning systems. In this study, the cold air distribution system is compared with the general ice storage system. Under the same cooling load conditions, experimental results show that the supply air volume of cold air distribution system decrease 38%, and decrease 45% flow rate of brine for the general ice storage system.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the indoor air quality (IAQ) and energy benefits of a dedicated outdoor air system (DOAS) and compare them with a conventional variable air volume (VAV) system. The DOAS is a decoupled system that supplies only outdoor air, while reducing its consumption using an enthalpy wheel. The VAV system supplies air that is mixed outdoor and transferred indoor. The VAV has the issue of unbalanced ventilation in each room in multiple zones because it supplies mixing air. The DOAS does not have this problem because it supplies only outdoor air. That is, the DOAS is a 100% outdoor air system and the VAV is an air conditioning system. The transient simulations of carbon dioxide concentration and energy consumption were performed using a MATLAB program based on the thermal loads from the model predicted by the TRNSYS 18 program. The results indicated that when the air volume is large, such as in summer, the distribution of air is not appropriate in the VAV system. The DOAS however, supplies the outdoor air stably. Moreover, in terms of annual primary energy consumption, the DOAS consumed approximately 40% less energy than the VAV system.

  • Numerical simulations of coal combustion were carried out to identify what kind of burner design parameters are affecting the NOx emission. Where used burner design parameters are primary air velocity, secondary air velocity, $2^{nd}/3^{rd}$ air ratio, tertiary air velocity, and tertiary air injection location. Taguchi method was used to find the effective burner design parameters related to NOx formation. The results of numerical simulations showed that secondary air velocity and $2^{nd}/3^{rd}$ air ratio was the key parameters reducing the NOx emission. The total number of simulation cases was reduced by Taguchi method.

  • This research was Performed to raise grade efficiency of Sturtevant type air classifier. to treat powder less than $74\mu\textrm{m}$ particle produced at the crushing process of the dry aggregates manufacturing system or concrete wastes recycling system. The experimental conditions were in the ranges. 0.85 to 5.15 $m^3$/s of primary air flow rate. 0.005 to 0.015 $m^3$/s of secondary air flow rate $30^{\circ}$ to $70^{\circ}$ of auxiliary blades angle. respectively. for 1.7~3.3 kg/min of the powder feed rate. It was found that the grade efficiency of the air classifier was increased as the baffle plate was attached at the expansion region. and the optimal operating conditions of the air flow rates and the blade angle were obtained. The fractional recovery curves from the experiments were well agreement with the theoretical one of Molerus model.

  • Capsule endoscopes generally use primary cells as a power source due to its limited space. However, the primary cells have several limitations such as high cost, limited power and no reuse. To solve these problems, a new wireless energy transmission method is proposed. The proposed approach uses air-gap transformer concepts and LC resonance to transmit energy from transmitter(primary side) to capsule endoscopes(secondary side). The ferrite core with 3-axis winding is used to increase energy transfer efficiency regardless of direction and location. The experimental results show that the proposed method stably supplies 30mW power to secondary circuit.

  • Comparing with the conventional transformer without the air gap, a contact-less transformer with the large air-gap (4.8cm) between the long primary winding and the secondary winding has the increased leakage inductance and the reduced magnetizing inductance. By the increased leakage inductance and the reduced magnetizing inductance on the primary of the contact-less transformer, a good deal of the primary current circulates through magnetizing inductance, which results in a massive loss in contact-less power supply (CPS). In this paper, the efficiency characteristics of the contact-less power supply using a series resonant converter is analyzed and simulated. The results are verified on the simulation based on the theoretical analysis and the 1.8kW experimental prototype.

  • The present study investigates effects of flow velocity on the convective heat/mass transfer characteristics in wavy ducts of a primary surface heat exchanger application. Local heat/mass transfer coefficients on the wavy duct sidewall are determined by using a naphthalene sublimation technique. The flow visualization technique is used to understand the overall flow structures inside the duct. The aspect ratio and corrugation angle of the wavy duct is fixed at 7.3 and 145$^{\circ}$ respectively, and the Reynolds numbers, based on the duct hydraulic diameter, vary from 100 to 5,000. The results show that there exist complex secondary flows and transfer processes resulting in non-uniform distributions of the heat/mass transfer coefficients on the duct side walls. At low Re (Re<1000), relatively high heat/mass transfer regions like cell shape appear on both pressure and suction side wall due to the secondary vortex flows called Taylor-Gortler vortices perpendicular to the main flow direction. However, at high Re (Re>1000), these secondary flow cells disappear and boundary layer type flow characteristics are observed on pressure side wall and high heat/mass transfer region by the flow reattachment appears on the suction side wall. The average heat/mass transfer coefficients are higher than those of the smooth circular duct due to the secondary flows inside wavy duct. And also friction factors are about two times greater than those of the smooth circular duct.

  • The ultra slim U-I and W-I primary and pick-up coils for OLEV (On-Line Electric Vehicles) are proposed. With the proposed structures, the amount and the cost of the core are dramatically reduced. Not only air gap but also the lateral displacement are improved. The proposed structures are applied to the OLEV bus and SUV, which achieve 83% efficiency at 17cm air gap with more than 60kW output power, and the construction cost is lower than ₩300M/km. The proposed coil structures are verified with simulations and experiments.

  • Background: We aimed to investigate the characteristics of primary spontaneous pneumothorax (PSP) in adolescents and to analyze the relationship between the occurrence of PSP and air pollutants. Methods: Data pertaining to age, sex, body mass index, smoking status, initial pneumothorax volume, presence of bullae, treatment methods, and city of residence were retrospectively obtained from January 2010 to December 2014. We investigated the association between short-term exposure to air pollutants (SO2, NO2, O3, CO, and PM10) and the occurrence of PSP using a case-crossover design with conditional logistic regression. Results: We collected information from 598 patients who were admitted for PSP, with a mean follow-up duration of 62.9 months. The majority (91.1%) of the patients were male. In the case-crossover design, conditional logistic regression showed that no air pollutant was associated with the occurrence of pneumothorax. The results were consistent across all city subgroups (Anyang, Gunpo, Uiwang, and Gwacheon). Conclusion: In our study, the incidence rate of pneumothorax was 153.8 per 100,000 person-years in male adolescents and 16.7 per 100,000 person-years in female adolescents. The case-crossover design showed that PSP in adolescents is unlikely to be related to air pollution.

  • Combustion experiments are carried out to obtain the fundamental data for application of a internally circulating fluidized bed combustor to the combustion of paper sludge wastes. Experimental parameters are identified as secondary air ratio, sludge weight and water contents. The secondary air ratio was varied from 0 to 20% and water content was 14%, 25%, 35%, 45%, 62% and sludge weight was 30g, 60g, 90g. As a result, carbon conversion ratio was higher than injection of primary air. Emission of CO and NOx reduced with an increase of secondary air injection.
