  • Algal blooming in 4 major rivers introduces substantial impacts to water front activity. Concentrations of algae are increasing at major points along the Geum River. Ecosystem food webs can be affected by algal blooming because blue-green algae release toxic materials. Even though there have been many studies on blue-green algae, its causality to environmental factors has not been completely determined yet. This study analyzed the exclusive correlation between various hydrometeorological, water quality, and hydrologic variables and the cell number of cyanobacteria to understand causality of blue-green algae in the Geum River. A prewhitening process was introduced to remove the autocorrelation structure and periodicity, which is useful to evaluate the effective relationship between two time series.

  • It is shown that the multiscale prewhitening matched filter for detecting Gaussian objects in Markov noise can be implemented by the undecimated wavelet transform with a biorthogonal spline wavelet. If the object to be detected is Gaussian shaped and its scale coincides with one of those computed by the wavelet transform, and if the background noise is truly Markov, then optimum detection is realized by thresholding the appropriate details image. Our detection algorithm is applied to the digitized mammograms for detecting microcalcifications. However, microcalcifications are not exactly Gaussian shaped and its background noise may not be Markov. In order to campensate for these discrepancy, Hotelling observer is employed, which is applied to feature vectors comprised of 3-octave wavelet coefficients.

  • In the field of prosthesis arm control, tile pattern classification of the EMG signal is a required basis process and also the estimation of force from col looted EMG data is another necessary duty. But unfortunately, what we've got is not real force but an EMG signal which contains the information of force. This is the reason why he estimate the force from the EMG data. In this paper, when we handle the EMG signal to estimate the force, spatial prewhitening process is applied from which the spatial correlation between the channels are removed. And after the orthogonal transformation, which is used in the force estimation process the transformed signal is inputed into the probabilistic model for pattern classification. To verify the different results of the multiple channels, SNR(signal to noire ratio) function is introduced.

  • Frequent algal blooms at major river systems in Korea have been serious social and environmental problems. Especially, the appearance of cyanobacteria with toxic materials is a threat to secure a safe drinking water. In order to model the behaviour of cyanobacteria cell number, an exclusive causality analysis using prewhitening technique was introduced to delineate effective parameters to predict the cell numbers of cyanobacteria in Seungchon Weir and Juksan Weir along Youngsan river system. Both input and output transfer function models were obtained to explain temporal variation of cyanobacteria cell number. A threshold behaviour of water temperature was implemented into the model development to consider winter characteristic of cyanobacteria. The implementation of water temperature threshold into the model structure improves the predictability in simulation. Even though the input output transfer model cannot completely explained all blooms of cyanobacteria, the simple structure of model provide a feasibility in application which can be important in practical aspect.

  • The soil moisture measurements and correlation analysis are presented to improve understanding the hydrological process at the hillslope scale. The rainfall events is a main driver of soil moisture variation, and its stochastic characteristic need to be properly treated prior to the correlation analysis between soil moisture measurements. Using field measurements for two designated periods during the late summer and autumn seasons in 2007 obtained from the Bumrunsa hillslope located at the Sulmachun watershed, prewhitened correlation analysis were performed for 8, 14, 7 and 7 relationships representing the vertical, lateral, recharge and return flows, for two designated periods, respectively. The analysis indicated both temporal and spatial variation patterns of hydrological processes, which can be explained by the relative contribution of matrix and macropore flows and the impact of transect topography, respectively.
