Rice straw was pretreated with aqueous ammonia in order to enhance enzyme digestibility. Soaking in ammonia aqueous (SAA) was conducted with 15% ammonia, at $60^{\circ}C$. for 24 h. Optimization of both saccharification conditions and enzyme loading of SAA rice straw was carried out. Especially enzyme loading test was performed using statistical method. Moreover proton beam irradiation (PBI) was also performed to overcome the problem which inhibit the enzyme digestibility at 1-25 kGy doses with 45 MeV of beam energy. Optimal condition for enzymatic saccharification was follows; pH 4.8, $50^{\circ}C$, 60 FPU of enzyme activity, 1:4 ratio of celluase and ${\beta}$-glucosidase. Also, optimal doses of PBI on rice straw and SAA-treated rice straw for efficient sugar recovery were found to be 3 kGy, respectively. When saccharification was performed with optimal condition, glucose conversion yield was 89% of theocratical maximum in 48 h, and 3 kGy of PBI was applied to SAA-treated rice straw, approximately 90% of the theoretical glucose yield was obtained in 12 h. The results of X-ray diffractometry (XRD) support the effect of both SAA and PBI on sugar recovery, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images unveiled the physical change of the rice straw surface since rugged rice straw surface was observed.
The present study is concerned with the demonstration of the relationship between the behavior and the brain concentration of noradrenaline resulted from pretreatment of amphetamine in isolated or aggregated rats. The experimental subjects were rats weighing from 120g to 200g housed 1, 2, and 6 in a cage. Analeptic activity of amphetamine was measured by determining the sleeping time induced by pentobarbital sod. The noradrenaline content in brain was determined with Aminco-Bowmann's spectro-photofluorometer by Lee's modification of Shore and Olin method. Results: 1) The analeptic activity of amphetamine on the sleeping time induced by pentobarbital sod. was more increased in the grouped rats than in isolated animal. 2) In being isolated and grouped rats, the sleeping time induced pentobarital sod, was markedly prolonged by pretreatment of amphetamine. 3) Means of housing rats, e.g., isolation or aggregation did not seem to affect the brain noradrenaline depleting action. 4) Repeated daily parenteral administration of amphetamine sulfate for a period 1 to 3 weeks resulted in decrement of brain noradrenaline concentration in being isolated and grouped rats. 5) The prolongation of sleeping time of the isolated or aggregated rats, when pretreated with amphetamine, compared with that of stock rats, seems to be attributable rather to the means of housing than the variation of the noradrenaline caused by amphetamine.
Objective: To investigate the stem cell-like characteristics of human periodontal ligament (PDL) stromal cells outgrown from orthodontically extracted premolars and to evaluate the potential for myogenic differentiation. Methods: PDL stromal cells were obtained from extracted premolars by using the outgrowth method. Cell morphological features, self-replication capability, and the presence of cell-surface markers, along with osteogenic, adipogenic, and chondrogenic differentiation, were confirmed. In addition, myogenic differentiation was induced by the use of 5-aza-2'-deoxycytidine (5-Aza) for DNA demethylation. Results: PDL stromal cells showed growth patterns and morphological features similar to those of fibroblasts. In contrast, the proliferation rates of premolar PDL stromal cells were similar to those of bone marrow and adipogenic stem cells. PDL stromal cells expressed surface markers of human mesenchymal stem cells (i.e., CD90 and CD105), but not those of hematopoietic stem cells (i.e., CD31 and CD34). PDL stromal cells were differentiated into osteogenic, adipogenic, and chondrogenic lineages. Myotube structures were induced in PDL stromal cells after 5-Aza pretreatment, but not in the absence of 5-Aza pretreatment. Conclusions: PDL stromal cells isolated from extracted premolars can potentially be a good source of postnatal stem cells for oromaxillofacial regeneration in bone and muscle.
Since 2005, food waste has been separately collected and recycled to animal feed or aerobic compost in South Korea. However, the conventional recycling methods discharge process wastewater, which contain pollutant equivalent to more than 50% of food waste. Therefore, anaerobic digestion is considered as an alternative recycling method of food waste to reduce pollutant and recover renewable energy. Recent studies showed that hydrogen can be produced at acidogenic stage in two-stage anaerobic digestion. In this study, the authors investigated the effects of pretreatment time and pH low set value on continuous mesophilic hydrogen fermentation of food waste. Food waste was successfully converted to $H_2$ when heat-treated at $70^{\circ}C$ for 60 min, which was milder than previous studies using pH 12 for 1 day or $90^{\circ}C$. Organic acid production dropped operational pH below 5.0 and caused a metabolic shift from $H_2/butyrate$ fermentation to lactate fermentation. Therefore, alkaline addition for operational pH at or over 5.0 was necessary. At pH 5.3, the result showed that the maximum hydrogen productivity and yield of 1.32 $m^3/m^3$.d and 0.71 mol/mol $carbohydrate_{added}$. Hydrogen production from food waste would be an effective technology for resource recovery as well as waste treatment.

Because of its tendency of making strong Hoc on the fiber surface with fines, Meogujaengi has not been valued as a material of Hanji. As an attempt to manufacture high value-added products using the material made from Jumchihanji, this study performed morphological classification and chemical component analysis and selection of pulping of Meogujaengi method. As a result, it can be concluded as follows, 1. Meogujaengi is assumed to be a local variety of Broussonetia karinoki and its outward appearance is distinguished from Broussonetia kazinoki. 2. The bast fiber of Meogujaengi is longer and thinner than that of Broussonetia papyrifera or Broussonetia kazinoki. However, because of the coarse linear of fiber tissue, there are many clusters. 3. The cluster phenomenon of Meogujaengi is nothing to do with its chemical components. Although the contents of its chemical components are different from those of Broussonetia kazinoki, no component was found that obstructs pulping. 4. The pretreatment for suppressing the occurrence of clusters of Meogujaengi was effective, and it was necessary to do secondary beating using hollander beater after beating mixed with PAM using knife beater.

We have developed an environment-friendly etching process, an alternative to the dichromic acid etching process, as a pretreatment of acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) plastic for electroless plating. In order to plate ABS plastic in an electroless way, there should be fine holes on the surface of the ABS plastic to enhance mechanically the adhesion strength between the plastic surface and the plate. To make these holes, the surface was coated uniformly with dispersed chemical foaming agents in a mixture of environmentally friendly dispersant and solvent by the methods of dipping or direct application. The solvent seeps into just below the surface and distributes the chemical foaming agents uniformly beneath the surface. After drying off the surface, the surface was heated at a temperature well below the glass transition temperature of ABS plastic. By pyrolysis, the chemical foaming agents made fine holes on the surface. In order to discover optimum conditions for the formation of fine holes, the mixing ratio of the solvent, the dispersant and the chemical foaming agent were controlled. After the etching process, the surface was plated with nickel. We tested the adhesion strength between the ABS plastic and nickel plate by the cross-cutting method. The surface morphologies of the ABS plastic before and after the etching process were observed by means of a scanning electron microscope.

The present investigation was performed to elucidate the effect of pretreatment with low dose ultraviolet radiation (UV) and ethyl methanesulfonate (EMS) on cell survival by trypan blue dye exclusion method and plasma membrane glycoconjugates by lectin-cytochemistry in sarcoma 180 (S180) cells. Pretreatment with 2 J/$m^2$ UV or 2 mM EMS increased the percentage of survival of cells subsequently treated with high dose UV (10 or 20 J/$m^2$) or EMS (10 or 20 mM), respectively. Staining intensity of concanavalin A (Con A) of the cells pretreated with 2J/$m^2$ UV or 2 mM EMS and subsequently treated with 10 or 20 mM EMS was stronger than that of the cellstreated with 10 or 20 mM EMS. These results suggest that there is an adaptive response on cell survival to EMS or UV in S180 cells. And the results show a change in mannose-containing glycoconjugates of plasma membrane in S180 cells pretreated with EMS or UV and subsequently treated with EMS.
Waste paper stands for the major biodegradable organic fraction of most of municipal solid waste. The potential of waste paper for glucose production was investigated in this current work. The pretreatment was accomplished by first subjecting waste paper to disintegration time (30 s), followed by ink removal of disintegrated waste paper using an deinking agent. Concentrated acid hydrolysis of waste paper with sulfuric acid was optimized to maximize glucose conversion. The concentrated acid hydrolysis conditions for waste paper (disintegrated time: 30 s, deinking agent loading : 15 ml) were optimized by using central composite design and response surface methodology. The optimization process employed a central composite design, where the investigated variables were acid concentration (60~80%), loading sulfuric acid (1~5 ml) and reaction time (1~5 h). All the tested variables were identified to have significant effects (p < 0.05) on glucose conversion. The optimum concentrated acid hydrolysis conditions were acid concentration of 70.8%, loading sulfuric acid of 3.2 ml and a reaction time of 3.6 h. This research of concentrated acid hydrolysis was a promising method to improve glucose conversion for waste paper.

The purpose of study has to analyze with non destructive method for researching the tool that could be measured with the status of record written on Hanji speedily. Because the original record should be destructed for analyzing with previous method in the case of the paper record, it was to develop the tool based on non destructive method for overcoming such limit. The study was used with FT NIR (Fourier transform NIR) for analyzing the Hanji for being written and preserved. The FT NIR spectrometer that of NIR spectrometer has the better performance of precision and accuracy than dispersive NIR spectrometer was used. Also the wavelength of FT-NIR was measured with 12,500 to 4,000 $cm^{-1}$, and the integrating sphere as diffuse reflectance type was used for analyzing Hanji. The moisture and acidity (pH) of chemical factors as quality evaluated factor of Hanji was studied for the correlation of NIR spectrum. And then The NIR spectrum was pretreated for showing the coefficients of optimum correlation. MSC and First derivative of Savitzky - Golay was used as pretreated method, and the coefficients of optimum correlation were shown by PLSR(Partial least square regression). And the coefficients of optimum correlation were calculated by PLSR(Partial least square regression). The correlation coefficients of acidity had 0.92 on NIR spectra without pretreatment. Also the SEP of acidity was 0.24. And then The NIR spectra with pretreatment would have more good correlation coefficients ($R^2=0.98$) and more good SEP(=019) on acidity. Therefore the data of correlation coefficients ($R^2$) and SEP with pretreatment was shown to be superior. And NIR spectra data of first derivative had best linearity on the correlation coefficients ($R^2=0.99$) and also SEP(=0.45) was superior. Therefore the correlation coefficients and SEP of first derivative had better than those of NIR spectra of no pretreatment. As such result, it was possible to evaluate the record status of Hanji speedily with integrated sphere and NIR analyzer as non destructive method.
