The aim of this study was to investigate the alterations in meningeal blood flow by stimulation of trigeminovascular system. An open cranial window was prepared on the right parietal bone of male Sprague-Dawley rats. Trigeminovascular system was stimulated by electrical stimulation of trigeminal ganglion (ETS), somatosensory (whisker) stimulation, or topical applications of capsaicin and neuropeptides including substance P and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP). Neonatal capsaicin pretreatment was performed with subcutaneous administration of capsaicin (50 mg/kg) within the first 24 hours after birth. Changes in regional blood flow of dural artery (rDBF) and pial artery (rPBF) were continuously measured through the cranial window by laser-Doppler flowmetry. Both ETS and capsaicin caused a chain of alterations in rPBF and rDBF responses, i.e., an immediate transient decrease followed by rapid and marked increase in rPBF, which were significantly attenuated not only by pretreatments with L-733,060, a $NK_1$ receptor blocker, $CGRP_{8-37}$, a $CGRP_1$ receptor blocker, and 7-nitroindazole monosodium salt (7-NINA), a neuronal nitric oxide synthase inhibitor but also by neonatal capsaicin treatment. Exogenous neuropeptides including substance P and CGRP increased the meningeal blood flow, which was significantly attenuated not only by pretreatment with L-733,060 and $CGRP_{8-37}$, respectively, but also by pretreatment with 7-NINA. The rPBF response to whisker stimulation was significantly attenuated not only by trigeminovascular system injuries including nasociliary nerve denervation and neonatal capsaicin treatment but also by pretreatments with L-733,060, $CGRP_{8-37}$ and 7-NINA. These results suggest that the stimulation of trigeminovascular system causes prominent alterations in meningeal blood flow, and that neuropeptides as well as nitric oxide in the trigeminovascular system are importantly implicated in the regulation of meningeal blood flow.
The paper aimed to review the influences of ginseng on the metabolism of foreign substances and on the activity of hepatic drug metabolizing enzyme system in mouse or rat liver. It has been known that ginseng components reduces the motality rates and the toxic effects induced by foreign materials. Chronic pretreatment of mouse or rat with ginseng extract fractions or saponin caused the increase in the metabolism of foreign materials and the activity of drug metabolizing enzymes, such as cytochrome $P_{450}$, NADPH cytochrome C reductase and glucuronyl S-transferase in liver. Thus, it may be concluded that decrease in toxic effect of foreign substances by ginseng pretreatment may be partly related to the induction of drug metabolizing enzymes in liver.
The influences of pretreatment medium, the addition of fresh medium, and the size of culture plate on the production of embryos were investigated in isolated microspore culture of hot pepper (Capsicum annuum L.). Among the media used for heat shock pretreatment ($32{\pm}1{^{\circ}C}$), high frequency embryo production was obtained when the sucrosestarvation medium A was used. On the other hand, neither 0.37 M mannitol solution nor NLNS medium supplemented with sucrose was not efficient for embryo production. The addition of culture medium to pretreatment media considerably decreased the embryo production even though embryo development proceeded further. The embryo production was not improved by the addition of fresh medium after 2 or 3 weeks from starting culture. Increase in the size of the culture plate from $3.5{\times}1.0$ cm to $6.0{\times}1.5$ cm improved embryo quality. These results will provide valuable information for developing an efficient microspore culture system of hot pepper for high frequency embryo production.
The effect of various vehicles on the permeation of a model drug, ketoprofen in solution formulation was evaluated using a flow-through diffusion cell system at $37^{\circ}C$. To investigate the mechanism of permeation rate enhancement, the effects of pretreatment with various vehicles on the permeation of the drug were evaluated using 5 mg/ml solution and saturated solution. The order of permeation rate of ketoprofen across hairless mouse skin after pretreatment with various vehicles was similar to the case where the vehicles and the drug were coadministered except ethanol and oleic acid. The results indicate that the mechanism of enhancement can be direct action of the vehicles on the barrier property of the skin and/or carrier mechanism.

The fragrant fabrics are prepared by the attaching microcapsules using acrylic binder. To improve the handle of fragrant fabrics, pretreatment by softener is suggested. The durability of fragrant fabrics and the change of their handle are investigated. It is carried out One-way ANOVA and Duncan test to determine bending properties, shear properties, surface properties of untreated, SO-MC and BI-MC by Kawabata system. BI-MC shows significant differences in B and 2HB. SO-MC shows significant differences in G and 2HG. It turned out the pretreatment by softener mitigated the effect of binder and makes fabrics softer than untreated fabrics.
The various pretreatment processes were evaluated to remove organic pollutants of weathered oil contaminated seawater(WOCS) for reverse osmosis desalination process, Biodegradation, coagulation, ultrafiltration, advanced oxidation processes and granular activated carbon filtration were used to evaluate the potential of organic pollutants removal in WOCS. Dissolved Organic Carbon(DOC) was almost not removed by biodegradation in WOCS. DOC was removed by 25% and 10% with the addition of $FeCl_3$ and PAC in WOCS, respectively. The removal efficiency using ultrafiltration(WOCS 500) was about 20% of DOC and 40% of $E_{260}$, respectively. In AOP application of WOCS, the removal of organic materials was improved up to 60% by the combination of $UV/O_3$ compared to UV process. However, 98% of DOC in woes could be removed by granular activated carbon filtration. It is revealed that activated carbon filtration is the best process for the pretratment of DOC removal.
Based on the activated sludge model, a simple aerobic digestion model which represents the aerobic sludge digestion by sequencing batch reactor(SBR) equipped with ultrasonicator was composed and performed in this study. The results are as follows. Aerobic digestion efficiency can be increased by adopting ultrasonic pretreatment. For the 5 days of SRT, 24 % of particulate component is predicted to be removed by ultrasonic pretreatment and aerobic digestion. This is 7 %p higher than that of conventional aerobic digestion. A Hybrid SBR aerobic digestion combined with ultrasonication shows higher digestion efficiency than aerobic digestion and ultrasonic pretreatment system. In case of this hybrid system, the digestion efficiency was predicted up to 49 % when the ultrasonication was performed every 2 hours, repeatedly. However, excessive treatment like every hours of ultrasonication in an aerobic digestion process results in adverse effect on TCOD removal because biomass disintegrated completely and the solubilized COD can not be used for the biomass synthesis again.

A pilot test was carried out to investigate the long term operation characteristics of Microfiltration (MF) system as a pretreatment for seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) processes for two years. A commercialized MF module with pressurized operation type was used to filter seawater to remove particles which can foul reverse osmosis (RO) membrane. Silt Density Index (SDI) values of filtered seawater by the MF system were ranged from 0.14 to 1.79, which meet the SDI standard for RO feed water as depicted in previous literatures. Although the tested seawater is quite clean (i.e., dissolved organic cabon (DOC) concentration and turbidity were about 1 mg/l and less than 1 NTU, respectively) enough not to foul the MF membrane, steep increase in trans-membrane pressure (TMP) with a constant flux were observed over a whole operation period. A set of operation and water analysis data implies that the steep increase in TMP was resulted from iron and maganese fouling by the combination of metal corrosion by seawater and oxidation state by aeration and residual chlorine.

The present study was undertaken to clarify the effect of Puffer fish skin extract (PF) on the hepatic alcohol metabolism in rats. It was observed that alcohol concentration in blood had been markedly decreased by the pretreatment of PF for two weeks. Activities of alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) and microsomal ethanol-oxidizing system (MEOS) were significantly incrased (more than 20% of control) by pretreatment of PF for two weeks and acute alcohol intoxication (5 g/kg) on final day. When rats were fed with subacute toxic state by alcohol (25v/v % , once a day for six weeks), activities of ADH and MEOS were significantly increased by additional treatments of PF for final two weeks. But the catalase activity was not affected by any of both case. And also activities of ADH and MEOS in vitro were not changed . These results suggest that PF treatemnt prompted the recovery from alcohol intoxication.

It has been reported that ginseng is effective in the central nervous system, immune system, and the strong inflammatory responses. However, there has been no research report yet about the effect of ginseng on allergic hypersensitivity reactivity. To confirm the ginseng effects on the release of mediators(histamine. leukotrienes etc.) which cause the hypersensitivity reactivity and inflammatory response, we used actively sensitized guinea pig airway tissues by utilizing the superfusion technique. In this procedure. the contractile response and mediators released after antigen stimulation of sensitized tissues, and IgG and IgE antibody products were measured in sera of immunized animals. Then the results of the controll group were compared to those of ginseng pretreatment groups. In the total saponin(TS) and panaxatriol(PT) pretreatment, histamine release decreased by $20\%$ in the tracheal tissues after active sensitization by ovalbumin(OVA, 10mg/kg), but in the lung parenchyma, histamine release decreased by $40\%.$ Panaxadiol(PD) significantly decreased histamine release by $40\%$ in the both tissues after active sensitization. TS, PT and PD of ginseng poorly blocked leukotrienes (LTs) and prostagrandin $D_2(PGD_2)$ release(less than $10\%$). Ginseng TS and PT had no effect on the serum IgG antibody production by ovalbumin, whereas PD significantly increased serum IgG antibody contents(approximately by 2 times). However, $IgG_1$ antibody products in the serum of guinea pig actively sensitized with ovalbumin after PD pretreatment were decreased, compared to that with ovalbumin alone. IgE antibody production by passive cutaneous anaphylaxis(PCA) titer in the TS pretreatment increased 3 times more than in the absence of TS(PCA titer by PT was not detected). These studies show that some ginseng saponins can in part act to inhibit mediator release in antigen - induced airway smooth muscle by inducing the IgG antibody production which has been changed in the specificity.
