The concrete box girder members are extensively used as a superstructure in bridge construction. The load carrying capacity of concrete box girders in lateral direction is generally influenced by the sizes of haunch and web. The internal upper decks are restrained by the webs and exhibit strength enhancement due to the development of aching action. The current codes do not have generally consider the arching action of deck slab in the design because of complexity of the behavior. However, there are significant benefits in utilizing the effects of arching action in the design of concrete members. The main objective of this paper is to propose a rational method to predict the ultimate load of deck slab by considering various haunch sizes and web restraint effect of concrete box girder bridges. To this end, a comprehensive experimental program has been set up and seven large-scale concrete box girders have been tested. A transverse analysis model of concrete box girders with haunches is proposed and compared with test data. The results of present study indicate that the ultimate strength is significantly affected by haunch dimension. The increase of strength due to concrete arcing action is reduced with an increase of prestressing steel ratio in laterally prestressed concrete box girders and increases with a larger haunch dimension. The proposed theory allows more realistic prediction of lateral ultimate strength for rational design of actual concrete box girder bridges.
The cost on transmission and erection of the precast prestressed concrete members largely depends on the weight of them. Optimum process is performed on a U-beam section to control the prestressing force, to reduce the self-weight, and to meet the required strength and stability. The strength, deflection, and concrete stress at the top and bottom of the section considered are required to check according to each construction step in this process. The weight of the original rectangular concrete beam could be reduced up to 39∼50% from this method. Two full scale prototype U-beams were proposed and tested in this study. It was found that the U-beams in the test showed good performance in strength and serviceability within the limits of ultimate strength design method.

Recently various types of prefabricated pier has been developed. In this paper, prefabricated composite columns with core steel elements embedded in concrete were proposed, which has no prestressing. Based on the previous research on composite columns with low steel ratio, the column were designed. A simple bolt connection detail between a footing and a pier element were also suggested. In order to investigate the seismic performance of the composite columns, several tests on concrete encased composite columns, which are prefabricated, were performed. Quasi-static tests were carried out and their performance was evaluated and compared with the results from the tests on CIP composite piers. In the case of precast piers, the end part of the pier needs to be carefully reinforced and related recommendations on details were derived.

This paper deals with the shaking table test(STT), the Quasi-Static Test(QST), and the Pseudo-Dynamic Test(PDT) to evaluate the seismic performance of RC bridge piers under near fault ground motion. Five scaled specimens were constructed the weight of the superstructure was applied through the prestressing strand at the centroid of the column section during the QST and PDT. However, the STT was simulated. The lateral inertia force of the superstructure by the mass frame which was linked with the pier because of the limited payload of shaking table. Particularly for the STT, friction underneath the mass frame was minimized by special details and it was verified by a series of pre-load test. Scale factor of the RC piers was 4.25.

Shear connectors have a finite slip capacity because of the mechanism by which they transfer the shear between UHPFRC and NC elements. At high degree of shear connection, non-linear analysis techniques are required to allow for compressive plasticity and tensile cracking behaviour of the elements. As with all non-linear problems, a closed form solution is difficult to find. A Modified Shooting Method Technique is developed here for non-linear analysis of UHPFRC/concrete composite. The initial effective moment is derived according to the prestressing force. The composite structure is divided into small segments which length is much less than the length of the structure and it can be assumed that the forces and displacements within each segment are constant. An equivalent analysis in composite girders would be to fix the slip strain in each segment and develop a moment curvature relationship for this slip strain in each segment. Additive forces and moment analysis on each section of the segments are analyzed by MSMT. Finally the ultimate slippage of the interface can be evaluated by the MSMT model. This paper presents a nonlinear analysis method for limited slip capacity of UHPFRC-NC interface.
It is difficult to accurately predict the flexural strength of prestressed members with unbonded tendons, unlike that of prestressed members with bonded tendons, due to the unbonded behavior between concrete and tendon. While there have been many studies on this subject, the flexural strength of prestressed members with unbonded tendons is still not well understood, and different standards in various countries often result in different estimation results for identical members. Therefore, this paper aimed to observe existing approaches and to propose an improved model for the ultimate strength of prestressed members with unbonded tendons. Additionally, a large number of tests results on flexural strength of prestressed members with unbonded tendons were collected from previous studies, which entered into a database to verify the accuracy of the proposed model. The proposed model, compared to existing approaches, well estimated the flexural strength of prestressed members with unbonded tendons, adequately reflecting the effects of influencing factors such as the reinforced steel ratio, the loading patterns, and the concrete strength. The proposed model also provided a reasonably good estimation of the ultimate strength of over-reinforced members and high-strength concrete members.
A plated beam is strengthened by bonding a thin plate to the tension face; it often fails because of premature debonding of the thin plate from the original beam in a brittle manner. A sound understanding of the mechanism of such debonding failure is very important for the effective use of this strengthening technique. This paper presents an improved analytical solution for interfacial stresses that incorporates multiple loading conditions simultaneously, including prestress, mechanical and thermal loads, and the effects of adherend shear deformations and curvature mismatches between the beam and the plate. Simply supported beams bonded with a thin prestressing plate and subjected to both mechanical and thermal loading were considered in the present work. The effects of the curvature mismatch and adherend shear deformations of the beam and plate were investigated and compared. The main mechanisms affecting the distribution of interfacial stresses were analyzed. Both the normal and shear stresses were found to be significantly influenced by the coupled effects of the elastic moduli with the ratios $E_a/E_b$ and $E_a/E_p$.
An experimental and numerical research was conducted to gain a deeper insight on the structural behaviour of deep-beams with indirect supports and to assess the size effects in the ultimate state behaviour. The experimental campaign focused on the influence of the reinforcement tie distribution height on the compression check of the support region and on the benefits of using unbonded prestressing steel. Three reduced scale specimens were tested and used to validate the results obtained with a nonlinear finite element model. As a good agreement could be found between the numerical and the experimental results, the numerical model was then further used to perform simulations in large scale deep-beams, with dimensions similar to the ones to be adopted in a practical case. Two sources of size effects were identified from the simulation results. Both sources are related to the concrete quasi-brittle behaviour and are responsible for increasing failure brittleness with increasing structural size. While in the laboratory models failure occurred both in the experimental tests as well as in the numerical simulations after reinforcement yielding, the numerically analysed large scale models exhibited shear failures with reinforcement still operating in the elastic range.
Cement acts as the most important component of concrete as it binds and holds the concrete together. But it is one of the major $CO_2$ emitters all over the world, during manufacturing (900 kg of $CO_2$ per 1000 kg). Some of the modern construction methods aim at reducing the amount of usage of cement and came out with numerous solutions for replacement of the same. One such supplement in current trend is the Steel dust or the Electric Arc Furnace Dust (EAFD), which is a waste product from the electric arc furnace when the scrap metal is melted. When the concrete containing steel dust is exposed to atmosphere, the environmental oxygen and moisture play role to form rust and ultimately the member becomes harder. As Cement is the binder of conventional concrete, only certain percentage of the same could be replaced by the new material, steel dust. Tests were conducted for the 28 days cube strength of M45 grade (suitable for prestressing) concrete which has 0%, 10%, 20%, 30%, 40% and 50% steel dust instead cement. From the test, the optimum percentage replacement of steel dust was obtained, for which the beams and overhead poles were cast, prestressed and tested for the failure load and deflections. A conventional concrete beam and overhead pole were also cast, prestressed and tested to compare the results with those of the beam and pole that contained steel dust. The load vs. deflection plot and other results from the test is also discussed.

In this study, it is aim to perform the construction stage analysis of suspension bridges using time dependent material properties. Fatih Sultan Mehmet Suspension Bridge connecting the Europe and Asia in Istanbul is selected as an example. Finite element models of the bridge are modelled using SAP2000 program considering project drawing. Geometric nonlinearities are taken into consideration in the analysis using P-Delta large displacement criterion. The time dependent material strength variations and geometric variations are included in the analysis. Because of the fact that the bridge has steel structural system, only prestressing steel relaxation is considered as time dependent material properties. The structural behaviour of the bridge at different construction stages has been examined. Two different finite element analyses with and without construction stages are carried out and results are compared with each other. As analyses result, variation of the displacement and internal forces such as bending moment, axial forces and shear forces for bridge deck and towers are given with detail. It is seen that construction stage analysis has remarkable effect on the structural behaviour of the bridge.
