  • The results of stand and field testing of a combustion chamber for a heavy-duty 150 MW gas turbine are discussed. The model represented one of 14 identical segments of a tubular multican combustor constructed 1:1 scale. The model experiments were executed at a lower pressure than that in a real gas turbine. Combustion efficiency, pressure loss factor, pattern factor, liner wall temperature, flame radiation, fluctuating pressure and NOx emission were measured at partial and full loads for both model and on-site testing. The comparison of these items in the stand and field test results led to has the development of a method of calculation and the improvement of gas turbine combustors.

  • A three-dimensional computation was conducted to understand effects of the low Reynolds number on the performance in a low-speed axial compressor at the design condition. The low Reynolds number can originates from the change of the air density because it decreases along the altitude in the troposphere. The performance of the axial compressor such as the static pressure rise was diminished by the separation on the suction surface with full span and the boundary layer on the hub, which were caused by the low Reynolds number. The total pressure loss at the low Reynolds number was found to be greater than that at the reference Reynolds number at the region from the hub to 85% span. Total pressure loss was scrutinized through three major loss categories in a subsonic axial compressor such as the profile loss, the tip leakage loss and the endwall loss using Denton#s loss model, and the effects of the low Reynolds number on the performance were analyzed in detail.

  • Three-dimensional experimental analyses were conducted in the pulverizer simplified isothermal model. The experimental model was constructed on a 1/3.5 scale of 500MW pulverized coal boiler. The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics of coal particle separator and the pressure loss in the pulverizer models with dynamic classifier. Without regards a shape of separator top, the results showed that the increase of dynamic classifier rpm was induced in finer coal particle. But the capacity of total mass per minute was reduced. Also, the increase of dynamic classifier rpm had no effect on total pressure loss, but an increase of inlet velocity was induced that the rise of total pressure loss in the pulverizer models with dynamic classifier.

  • Extinction characteristics of hydrogen-air diffusion flames at various pressures are investigated numerically by adopting counterflow flame configuration as a model flamelet. Especially, effect of radiative heat loss on flame extinction is emphasized. Only gas-phase radiation is considered here and it is assumed that $H_2O$ is the only radiating species. Radiation term depends on flame thickness, temperature, $H_2O$ concentration, and pressure. From the calculated flame structures at various pressures, flame thickness decreases with pressure, but its gradient decreases at high pressure. Flame temperature and mole fraction of $H_2O$ increase slightly with pressure. Accordingly, as pressure increases, radiative heat loss becomes dominant. When radiative heat loss is considered, radiation-induced extinction is observed at low strain rate in addition to transport-induced extinction. As pressure increases, flammable region, where flame is sustained, shifts to the high-temperature region and then, shrunk to the point on the coordinate plane of flame temperature and strain rate. The present numerical results show that radiative heat loss can reduce the operating range of a combustor significantly.

  • We propose an equivalent model of a sintered metal mesh filter calculated by Ergun's equation and polynomial regression for the CFD analysis of breakaway devices at a hydrogen fueling station. CFD analysis of filters that cause high pressure loss is essential because breakaway devices in high-pressure hydrogen conditions require low pressure loss. A differential pressure experiment with a filter was performed in a low-pressure air condition considering similarities. An equivalent model was developed by deriving the resistance value by the polynomial regression using the experimental results. The results of CFD analysis using the equivalent model show that there was almost no error in the operating condition of the breakaway device compared to the experimental results. Through this work, we believe that the proposed equivalent model of a filter can be applied to the analysis of breakaway devices in hydrogen fueling stations. We will study how to optimize the shape and position of the filter in breakaway devices using the developed equivalent model.

  • In this paper, the belt-pulley mechanical loss is investigated. A bondgraph model for the mechanical loss is developed from the viewpoint of the power flow by assuming that all power losses are attributed to the torque loss. The mechanical loss model consists of transient and steady state part. The coefficients of the power loss model are obtained from the experiments. It is found from the simulations and experiments that the steady state loss depends on the line pressure, input torque and rotational speed while the transient loss depends on the rotational speed, shift speed and the inertial torque.

  • The complicated helical flow formed in the regenerative turbomachines is usually decomposed into a peripheral component and a circulatory component. On the basis of the momentum exchange theory, the circulatory flow plays a critical role of imparting angular momentum to the peripheral flow. Therefore, the accuracy of performance prediction is dominated by the circulatory flow modeling. Until now the circulatory flow has been accounted of a standstill flow normal to the peripheral flow. However, the circulatory path from the impeller exit to the re-entrance inlet is exposed to the adverse pressure gradient, so it would be more realistic to describe that the circulatory flow is formed on the skewed plane not perpendicular to the peripheral flow. Present study suggests new circulatory flow loss model including the effect of adverse pressure gradient and modifies the effective circulatory flow rate and circulatory pivot which were previously published.

  • The purpose of this study is to calculate transmission loss of the high speed railway's wall section accurately. Transmission loss measurement of ideal case i.e. the wall in the laboratory condition was carried out in first, which results were compared with those by statistical energy method. Transmission loss values of high speed railway calculated out by experimental method are compared with those from closed form solution. Commercial statistical energy analysis was also used to predict the outside pressure level using those measured transmission loss values. Simple SEA model could estimate reasonable exterior sound pressure level.
