  • The recent Fukushima nuclear power plant accidents shows that the core make up at high RCS pressure condition is very important to prevent core melting. The core make up flow at high pressure condition should be driven by gravity force or passive forces because the AC-powered safety features are not available during a Station Black Out (SBO) accident. The reactor Coolant System (RCS) mass inventory is continuously decreased by releasing steam through the pressurizer safety valves after reactor trip during a SBO accident. The core will be melted down within 2~3 hours without core make up action by active or passive mode. In the new design concept of a Hybrid Safety Injection Tank (Hybrid SIT) both for low and high RCS pressure conditions, the low pressure nitrogen gas serves as a charging pressure for a LBLOCA injection mode, while the PZR high pressure steam provides an equalizing pressure for a high pressure injection mode such as a SBO accident. After the pressure equalizing process by battery driven initiation valve at a high pressure SBO condition, the Hybrid SIT injection water will be passively injected into the reactor downcomer by gravity head. The SBO simulation by MARS code show that the core makeup injection flow through the Hybrid SIT continued up to the SIT empty condition, and the core heatup is delayed as much.

  • Discharge capacity test is carried out to find out influencing factors on discharge capacity of prefabricated horizontal drains to improve weak dredged clay. Four representative prefabricated horizontal drains are selected based on the size of drain as well as the shape of core. Test is carried out for 10 days at each three level of confining pressure for all drains. Effects of elapsed time, confining pressure, hydraulic gradient and strength of filter and core on discharge capacities are examined. It is found that discharge capacity of drain, which has deformable core or has a possibility of squeezing filter into core, decreases more with time due to its low strength. As confining pressure increases, discharge capacity decreases due to the squeezing of filter into core.

  • In this study, an experiment with large-scale model was performed according to raising embankment in order to investigate the behaviour of failure due to overtopping. The pore water pressure, earth pressure and settlement by high water level, a rapid drawdown and overtopping were compared and analyzed. Also, seepage analysis and slope stability analysis were performed for steady state and transient conditions. The pore water pressure and earth pressure for inclined core type showed high value at the base of the core, but they showed no infiltration by leakage. The pore water pressure and earth pressure by overtopping increased at the upstream slope and core, it is considered a useful data that can accurately estimate the possibility of failure of the reservoir. The behavior of failure due to overtopping was gradually enlarged towards the downstream slope from reservoir crest, and the inclined core after the raising embankment was influenced significantly to prevent the reservoir failure. The pore water pressure distribution for steady state and transient condition showed positive (+) pore water pressure on the upstream slope, it was gradually changed negative (-) pore water pressure on the downstream slope. The pore water pressure by overtopping showed a larger than the high water level at the downstream slope, it was likely to be the piping phenomenon because the hydraulic gradients showed largely at the inclined core and reservoir crest. The safety factor showed high at the steady state, and transient conditions did not show differences depending on the rapid drawdown.

  • In this study, an experiment with large-scale model was performed according to raising embankment in order to investigate the cause of collapse by a change in water level of reservoir. Also, the settlement and pore water pressure by high water level and a rapid drawdown were compared and analyzed. After raising embankment for inclined core, there was no infiltration by leakage. For the vertical core, the pore water pressure showed a largely change by faster infiltration of pore water than in the inclined core. In a rapid drawdown, inclined core was remained stable but vertical core showed a largely change in pore water pressure. A settlement after a raising embankment showed a larger measure of settlement than before the raising embankment. The leakage quantity before a raising embankment and an inclined extension showed no leakage. Leakage in vertical extension was measured 160 $l$. From the result, a instrument system that can accurately estimate a change of pore water pressure shall be established for a rational maintenance and stabilization of raising embankment for agricultural reservoir.

  • This paper presents preliminary analysis and results on IASCC sensitivity of a core shroud in the reactor pressure vessel. First, neutron irradiation flux distribution of the reactor internals was calculated by using the Monte Carlo simulation code, MCNP6.1 and the nuclear data library, ENDF/B-VII.1. Second, based on the neutron irradiation flux distribution, temperature and stress distributions of the core shroud during normal operation were determined by performing finite element analysis using the commercial finite element analysis program, ABAQUS, considering irradiation aging-related degradation mechanisms. Last, IASCC sensitivity of the core shroud was assessed by using the IASCC sensitivity definition of EPRI MRP-211 and the finite element analysis results. As a result of the preliminary analysis, it was found that the point at which the maximum IASCC sensitivity is derived varies over operating time, initially moving from the shroud plate located in the center of the core to the top shroud plate-ring connection brace over operating time. In addition, it was concluded that IASCC will not occur on the core shroud even after 60 years of operation (40EFPYs) because the maximum IASCC sensitivity is less than 0.5.

  • This study was performed to evaluate some geometrical characteristics of disc type swirl nozzles and to develop nozzles having improved spraying performance for knapsack sprayers. Considered geometrical characteristics of the nozzles were disc thickness, orifice diameter, swirl chamber diameter and shape of the swirl chamber (nozzle chamber). 3 types of nozzle cores were compared. Main results of this study were as follows. 1. Spraying angle (A) was increased with decreasing disc thickness (x), and with increasing orifice diameter (y) or spraying pressure (z). The equation was as a follow. $$A=3.95\frac{1}{x}+73.50\sqrt{y}+18.97\sqrt{z}-60.16$$ 2. Spraying flow rate (F) was increased with decreasing disc thickness (x), and with increasing orifice diameter (y) or spraying pressure (z). The equation was as a follow. $$F=-89.95x+611.09y+620.49\sqrt{z}-868.20$$ 3. Mean spraying droplet size (V) was decreased with decreasing disc thickness (x), with increasing orifice diameter (y) in low spraying pressure, with decreasing orifice diameter (y) in high spraying pressure, and with increasing spraying pressure (z). $$V=148.77x^4-746.85x^3+1311.76x^2-917.31x$$ 4. The spray pattern was compared using CV values. The CV value of the nozzle core type 1 was 26.7% in spraying pressure $3\;kgf/cm^2$, the CV value of the core type 2 was 23.6% in spraying pressure $2\;kgf/cm^2$, the CV value of the core type 3 was 20.6% in spraying pressure $1\;kgf/cm^2$. 5. Minimum spraying pressure was improved from $1.5\;kgf/cm^2\;to\;1.0\;kgf/cm^2$ by changes of nozzle core shape.

  • Lead-alloys are very attractive nuclear coolants due to their thermo-hydraulic, chemical, and neutronic properties. By utilizing the HELIOS (Heavy Eutectic liquid metal Loop for Integral test of Operability and Safety of PEACER$^2$) facility, a thermal hydraulic benchmarking study has been conducted for the prediction of pressure loss in lead-alloy cooled advanced nuclear energy systems (LACANES). The loop has several complex components that cannot be readily characterized with available pressure loss correlations. Among these components is the core, composed of a vessel, a barrel, heaters separated by complex spacers, and the plenum. Due to the complex shape of the core, its pressure loss is comparable to that of the rest of the loop. Detailed CFD simulations employing different CFD codes are used to determine the pressure loss, and it is found that the spacers contribute to nearly 90 percent of the total pressure loss. In the system codes, spacers are usually accounted for; however, due to the lack of correlations for the exact spacer geometry, the accuracy of models relies strongly on assumptions used for modeling spacers. CFD can be used to determine an appropriate correlation. However, application of CFD also requires careful choice of turbulence models and numerical meshes, which are selected based on extensive experience with liquid metal flow simulations for the KALLA lab. In this paper consistent results of CFX and Star-CD are obtained and compared to measured data. Measured data of the pressure loss of the core are obtained with a differential pressure transducer located between the core inlet and outlet at a flow rate of 13.57kg/s.
