This article describes an electrical network analysis (ENA) method to calculate the pressure distribution of a vacuum system in a molecular flow regime. The vacuum system was modeled using electrical components. For an accurate analysis, a complexly combined pipe model, excluding entrance conductance, was employed and the pressure distribution was simulated using ENA. A vacuum system comprising three vacuum pumps was used for simplicity. In addition, the ENA results were compared with results from finite element analysis (FEA) and experimental measurements. The pressure distribution profiles estimated from ENA, performed using the LTSpice IV software, were in agreement with FEA and experimental results.

The aim of this study is to provide fundamental informations that make it possible to use a cool stream and a hot stream simultaneously. We changed the pressure of compressed air that flows into a tube, the inner diameter of orifice that a cold stream exits, and the mass flow rate ratio. And in each case, we measured the temperature of a cold stream and a hot stream in each exit of a tube. Also we measured the axial temperature distribution and the radial temperature distribution in internal space of a tube. From the study, following conclusive remarks can be made. Average flow rate that flows into a tube is in proportion to square root of inlet pressure. As inlet pressure increases axial and radial temperature distribution in the inner space of vortex-tube increase. As mass flow rate ratio change, separation point moves.
A numerical study for a two dimensional multi-jet with crossflow of the spent fluid has been carried out. Three different distributions of mass-flow rate at 5 jet exits were assumed to see their effects upon the flow characteristics, especially in the jet-flow region. For each distribution, various Reynolds numbers ranging from laminar to turbulent flows were considered. Calculations drew the following items as conclusion. 1) The development of the free jets issued from downstream jets was hindered by the crossflow formed due to jets. Consequently, the free jet was developed into the channel flow without any evident symptom of impingement jet flow characteristics 2) The crossflow induced the pressure gradient along the cross section of jet exits and the value of the pressure gradient increased as going downstream. The crossflow generated also the turbulent kinetic energy as it collied with the downstream jets. 3) The skin friction coefficient along the impingement plate was affected more by the distribution of mass flow rate at jet exits rather than by the Reynolds number. The skin friction coefficient was inversely proportional to the square root of the Reynolds number, regardless of flow regime when a fully developed flow was formed in the jet flow region. 4) The distribution of the skin friction coefficient along the impingement plate was found to be controlled by adjusting the distribution of mass flow rate at jet exits.

Unconventional structures are getting more popular in recent days. Large-span roofs are used for many structures, such as airports, stadiums, and conventional halls. Identifying the pressure distribution and wind load acting on those structures is essential. This paper offers a collaborative study of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations and wind tunnel tests for assessing wind pressure distribution for a building with a combined slender curved roof. The hybrid turbulence model, Improved Delayed Detached Eddy Simulation (IDDES), simulates the open terrain turbulent flow field. The wind-induced local pressure coefficients on complex roof structures and the turbulent flow field around the structure were thus calculated based upon open terrain wind flow simulated with the FLUENT software. Local pressure measurements were investigated in a boundary layer wind tunnel simultaneous to the simulation to determine the pressure coefficient distributions. The results predicted by CFD were found to be consistent with the wind tunnel test results. The comparative study validated that the recommended IDDES model and the vortex method associated with CFD simulation are suitable tools for structural engineers to evaluate wind effects on long-span complex roofs and plan irregular buildings during the design stage.
Aerospike nozzles have been expected to be used for an engine of a reusable space shuttle to respond to growing demand for rocket-launching and its cost reduction. In this study, the flow field structures in any cross sections around clustered linear aerospike nozzles are visualized and analyzed, using laser induced fluorescence (LIF) of nitrogen monoxide seeded in the carrier gas of nitrogen. Since flow field structures are affected mainly by pressure ratio, the clustered linear aerospike nozzle is set inside a vacuum chamber to carry out the experiments in the wide range of pressure ratios from 75 to 200. Flow fields are visualized in several cross-sections, demonstrating the complicated three-dimensional flow field structures. Pressure sensitive paint (PSP) of PtTFPP bound by poly- IBM -co-TFEM is also applied to measurement of the complicated pressure distribution on the spike surface, and to verification of contribution of a truncation plane to the thrust. Finally, to examine the effect of the sidewalls attached to the aerospike nozzle, the flow fields around the nozzle with the sidewalls are compared with those without sidewalls.
Experimental study was conducted to reveal the flow mechanism under rotating stall in an axial flow fan. For this study unsteady pressure was measured using high frequency pressure transducers mounted on the casing wall of rotor passage and total pressure fields were measured at the rotor upstream and downstream. The measured pressure signal was analyzed by Wavelet Transform and Double Phase Locked Averaging Technique. From the result of unsteady pressure field of the casing wall, one period of rotating stall was divided into three zones and the flow characteristics on each zone were described in detail. The pressure field was also analyzed in terms of the pressure distribution along pressure side and suction side of blade tip. From the result of total pressure fields at inlet and outlet of the rotor, the useful information on the characteristics of the stall cell in radial direction was provided.
Experimental study on the flow field inside the nozzle for radial turbine was performed. At design point, the pressure is high and the Mach number is low at the pressure side of the nozzle inlet semi-vaneless space as the flow turns through the nozzle vanes. As the flow accelerates through the nozzle passage to the throat the pressure level at the pressure and suction sides becomes similar. The flow continued accelerating from the throat to the inlet of turbine wheel and the pressure field became uniform in the circumferential direction in the vaneless space. In high expansion ratio condition, strong favorable pressure gradient band region occurred just after the throat in the semi-vaneless space in the circumferential direction and the pressure became uniform in the circumferential direction after this band. In low expansion ratio condition, core flow acceleration is dominant after the throat and this non-uniform pressure field reached to the inlet of turbine wheel.

It was reported recently that the pump head degradation near the best efficiency point from single-phase flow to the break-down due to air entrainment became less in a screw-type centrifugal pump than in a general centrifugal pump. In this paper, I carried out internal pressure measurements and visualizations, and investigated the various physical phenomena occurring inside a screw-type centrifugal pump operated in air-water two-phase flow. The results could give some characteristics about the degradation of pump performance on air-water two-phase flow.
A computerized axial flow fan design system is developed with the capabilities for predicting the aerodynamic performance and the noise characteristics of fan. In the present study, the basic fan blading design is made by combining vortex distribution scheme with camber line design, airfoil selection, blade thickness distribution and stacking of blade elements. With the designed fan blade geometry, the through-flow field and the performance of fan are analyzed by using the streamline curvature computing scheme with spanwise total pressure loss and flow deviation models. Fan noise is assumed to be generated due to the pressure fluctuation induced by wake vortices of fan blades and to radiate as dipole distribution. The vortex-induced fluctuating pressure on blade surface is calculated by combining thin airfoil theory and the predicted flow field data. The predicted performances, sound pressure level and noise directivity patterns of fan by the present method are favorably compared with the test data of actual fans. Furthermore, the present method is shown to be very useful in designing the blade geometry of new fan and optimizing design variables of the fan to achieve higher efficiency and lower noise level.

Impinging jets are observed when exhaust gases from missiles or V/STOL aircrafts impinge on the ground, flame deflector, ship deck, etc. The flow shows different patterns according to the nozzle geometry, nozzle-to-plate distance, and plate angle, for example. This paper describes experimental works on the phenomena (pressure distribution, occurrence of stagnation bubble, and so on.) when underexpanded supersonic jets impinge on a perpendicular flat plate using a supersonic cold-flow system, and compares the results with those obtained using a shock tunnel. The flow characteristics for the supersonic cold-flow system were also investigated. Surface pressure distribution of supersonic cold-flow system differed from that of shock tunnel because of water and temperature in the low-pressure chamber. Surface pressure distribution as to underexpanded ratio showed similar patterns together.
