The usefulness of unsteady combustion was experimentally investigated using confined premixed flames stabilized by a rearward-facing step. For this purpose, apparatus of forced pulsating mixture supply, which could be modulated its amplitude and frequency, was designed. The unsteady combustion used in this experiment plays an important role in controlling self-excited combustion oscillations and furthermore it exhibits desirable performance, from a practical point of view, such as high combustion and reduction of pollutant emission like nitric oxide.
In this talk, we will present what we believe is the state-of-the-art of the numerical modeling and simulation of the combustion processes as they relate to typical scramjet engines. The free-stream Mach number is hypersonic, but the speed is not sufficiently decelerated at the inlet/isolator, as in ramjets, so that combustion takes place under supersonic conditions. This creates some difficulties for most turbulence-combustion models. We delve into the details of these problems, by discussing the software programs that have a long track record for scramjet combustion simulation; with a focus on the accuracy of the baseline numerical methods used, the turbulence modeling/simulation approach, the comparative fidelity of the turbulence-combustion interaction models, ability to simulate premixed/non-premixed/partially-premixed, quenching/re-ignition capabilities, the numerical spark-plug method, Damkholer number regimes supported, and the effects of variable Prandtl, Schmidt, and Lewis numbers. Validation results from high-speed and low-speed combustion applications will also be presented.
The reformer system is a method for hydrogen production from hydrocarbon fuels such as natural gas under high temperature environment($about{\sim}1,000^{\circ}C$). The premixed swirl burner with mixing swirler and combustion swirler designed to deliver fuel cell electric output from 0.5 kW to 1.5 kW. Premixed swirl burner experiments using natural gas and mixture of natural gas and anode off gas were carried out to analyse flame patterns and stability by equivalence ratio respectively. The results show that the stable swirl flame can be established for all cases of fuels type using the premixed swirl burner. The swirl flame had a wide stability region and it showed very low CO(50 ppm) and $NO_x$(20 ppm) emission at different fuel type and various equivalence ratio conditions. The operating range of premixed swirl burner for stable swirl flame is found to exist between equivalence ratio of 0.70 to 0.90 for turn down ratio of 3:1.

The aim of this work is to identify application of ultra low NOx and CO combustor. To achieve this, we developed the premixed oxidizer-staging combustor using a cyclone flow. Various factors such as equivalence ratio for the combustion condition and swirl type for secondary air injection have been tested experimentally for flame stability and NOx, CO emission characteristics. Before to do this, we had been tested cyclone premixed combustor in advance. it is similar to first combustor of premixed oxidizer-staging combustor. As a result, cyclone premixed flame shows the very high flame stability and low NOx emission. however, it can be identified that there were some problems such as a little high CO emission and thermal resistance of combustor wall. Cyclone premixed oxidizer-staging combustor can resolve those of problems. In our combustor, we can found out optimal condition that the secondary air injection method is swirl type, swirl direction is co-swirl and equivalence ratio of first combustor is 1.3. Quantitatively, we can achieve 10.8 ppm for NOx and 30.2 ppm for CO emissions respectively. Form this result, we can identified that cyclone premixed oxidizer-staging combustor can apply to ultra low NOx and CO combustor.
The characteristics of the outward-propagating premixed flames of stoichiometric mixtures of R134a/methane/oxygen/nitrogen have been experimentally investigated in a constant volume combustion chamber. Three regimes of the expanding flames were categorized based on the flame behavior.

The laminar flame concept in turbulent reacting flow is considered applicable to many practical combustion systems For turbulent premixed combustion under widely used flamelet concept, the flame surface is described as an infinitely thin propagating surface that such a Propagating front can be represented as a level contour of a continuous function G. In this study, for the Purpose of validating the LES of G-equation combustion model. LES of turbulent Premixed combustion with dynamic SGS model of G-equation in turbulent channel flow are carried out A constant density assumption is used. The Predicted flame propagating speed is goof agreement with the DNS result of G. Bruneaux et al.
Instantaneous, three-dimensional scalar dissipation rates of the reaction progress variable are measured in turbulent premixed Bunsen flames of lean hydrocarbon/air mixtures with the two-sheet, two-dimensional Rayleigh scattering technique. The flames investigated are located in the turbulent flame-front regime on a newly proposed combustion diagram for premixed flames. The conditionally-averaged mean scalar dissipation rates, $N_{\zeta}$ are found to be lower than the calculated laminar values, indicating a locally broadened flame front. In agreement with previous measurements, the maximum of $N_{\zeta}$, decreases strongly with increasing Karlovitz numbers. The conditional probability density functions are close to a log-normal distribution for scalar dissipation rates conditioned at the progress variable value where the scalar dissipation is maximum in unstretched laminar flame calculations. The time scale for the Favre-averaged mean scalar dissipation rate decreases in general across the turbulent flame brush from the unburnt to burnt side.
The zone-conditioned CMC equations are derived by taking an unconditional average of the generic conservation equations multiplied by delta and Heaviside functions in terms of mixture fraction and reaction progress variable. The resulting equations are essentially in the same form as the single zone CMC equations except for separate flow fields for burned and unburned gas. The zone-conditioned two-fluid equations are applied to a stagnating turbulent premixed flame brush of Cheng and Shepherd[5l. It is shown that the flame stretch factor is of crucial importance to accurately reproduce the measured mean reaction progress variable and conditional velocities. Further work is in progress for the relationship between surface and volume averages and extension to partially premixed combustion on the basis of a triple flame structure, e. g. in a lifted turbulent diffusion flame.
Vortex Inertial Staged Air (VIStA) burner for an once-through type boiler has been restored to the original premixed type to reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emission. The premixed version yields additional de-NOx effect by 20 ppm. The flame is formed closer to the wall at the 1st stage combustion chamber compared with the non-premixed one. The combustion characteristics are more sensitive to the air distribution for the premixed type, which necessitates proper optimization.
In this study confirmed the reduction effect of pollutant by applying Fi-EGR and FPI-EGR to hybrid combustion system realizing premixed flame and non-premxied flame at once. The results showed that NOx emission index decreased significantly in case of adopting EGR. Additionally, the hybrid combustion system with EGR resulted in a better performance compared to usual non-premixed combustion system such that it can reduce $NO_x$ emission at equivalent EGR ratios. Especially, in the case of 25% of FI-EGR ratio at hybrid combustion system that the ratio of non-premixed and premixed is 50 : 50, NOx emission index reduction rate was about 59% compared to $NO_x$ emission of non-premixed combustion system without EGR and in the case of 15% of FPI-EGR ratio at hybrid combustion system that the ratio of non-premixed and premixed is 70 : 30, $NO_x$ emission index reduction rate was about 48% compared to $NO_x$ emission of hybrid combustion system without EGR.
