Moleclar size distribution of three AC-20 asphalt cements were observed using high pressure - gel permeation chromatograph (HP-GPC). Bituminous concrete specimens were made using the asphalt cements and one aggre¬gate in laboratory to measure mechanical properties, tensile strength CIS) and resilient modulusCM,J. in dry and wet conditons. Results of mechanical property tests and profile of molecular size distribution of asphalt cements were analyzed to evaluate the relatonship of mechanical property with chromatogram. Regression analy¬sis showed a strong correlation between a mechanical property and sliced percent areas of chromatogram. Mathematical prediction models were developed based on the regression analysis. It was shown that characteris¬tics of asphalt cement chromatogram could be successfully used for estimation of selected mechanical property of asphalt concrete .
This article focuses on concrete structures submitted to impact loading and is aimed at predicting local damage in the vicinity of an impact zone as well as the global response of the structure. The Discrete Element Method (DEM) seems particularly well suited in this context for modeling fractures. An identification process of DEM material parameters from macroscopic data (Young's modulus, compressive and tensile strength, fracture energy, etc.) will first be presented for the purpose of enhancing reproducibility and reliability of the simulation results with DE samples of various sizes. The modeling of a large structure by means of DEM may lead to prohibitive computation times. A refined discretization becomes required in the vicinity of the impact, while the structure may be modeled using a coarse FE mesh further from the impact area, where the material behaves elastically. A coupled discrete-finite element approach is thus proposed: the impact zone is modeled by means of DE and elastic FE are used on the rest of the structure. The proposed approach is then applied to a rock impact on a concrete slab in order to validate the coupled method and compare computation times.

To predict autogenous shrinkage of concrete, unsaturated pore compensation factor could be calculated by experiments of autogenous shrinkage of cement paste on the assumption that the differences between degree of hydration and strain rate of autogenous shrinkage are unsaturated pore formation rate. Applying unsaturated pore compensation factor on modified Pickket model considering contribution factor and non-contribution factor to autogenous shrinkage of concrete, experimental data and existing model were compared. From the results modified Pickket model was verified to present similar tendency between Tazawa model and experimental data, but CEB-FIP model might be corrected because this model uses ultimate autogenous shrinkage underestimated and the same autogenous time function of concrete material properties considering only compressive strength.
This paper describes the effect of strain hardening cement composite (SHCC) material on structure performance of reinforced concrete (RC) beams with high-strength reinforcing bar. Also, this paper explores the structure application of SHCC in order to mitigation cracking damage and improve the ductility of flexural RC members. The prediction model for flexural strength of doubly reinforced SHCC beams are investigated in this study. To achieve the these objectives, a total of 6 rectangular beam specimens were tested under four point monotonic loading condition. The main parameters included the types of cement composite and reinforcing bar. Test results indicated that reinforced beam specimens with SHCC material were improved the structure performances and damage characteristics. Specifically, replacement of conventional high-strength concrete with SHCC materials has the potential of high-strength steel bar as flexural reinforcement on RC members. It is remarkable that suggested method of reinforced SHCC beams with high-strength reinforcing bar could be used usefully to the structure design.
Steel-concrete composite structures have been extensively used in building, bridges, and other civil engineering infrastructure. Shear stud connectors between steel and concrete are essential in composite members to guarantee the effectiveness of their behavior in terms of strength and deformability. This study focuses on investigating the shear stiffness of headed studs embedded in several types of concrete with wide range of compressive strength, and their effects on the elastic behavior of steel-concrete composite girders were evaluated. Firstly, totally 206 monotonic push-out tests from the literature were reviewed to investigate the shear stiffness of headed studs embedded in various types of concrete (NC, HPC, UHPC etc.). Shear stiffness of studs is defined as the secant stiffness of the load-slip curve at 0.5Vu, and a formulation for predicting defined shear stiffness in elastic state was proposed, indicating that the stud diameter and the elastic modulus of steel and concrete are the main factors. And the shear stiffness predicted by the new formula agree well with test results for studs with a diameter ranging from 10 to 30 mm in the concrete with compressive strength ranging from 22.0 to 200.0MPa. Then, the effects of shear stiffness on the elastic behaviors of composite girders with different sizes and under different loading conditions were analyzed, the equations for calculating the stress and deformation of simply supported composite girders considering the influence of connection's shear stiffness were derived under different loading conditions using classical linear partial-interaction theory. As the increasing of shear stiffness, the stress and deflection at the most unfavorable section under partial connected condition tend to be those under full connected condition, but the approaching speed decreases gradually. Finally, the connector's shear stiffness was recommended for fully connection in composite girders with different dimensions under different loading conditions. The findings from present study may provide a reference for the prediction of shear stiffness for headed studs and the elastic design of steel-concrete composite girder.
In the present study, a numerical analysis was performed for interior connections of continuous flat plate to analyze the effect of design parameters such as column section shape, gravity load and slab span on the behavioral characteristics of the connections. For the purpose, a computer program for nonlinear FE analysis was developed, and the validity was verified. Through the parametric study, the variations of shear stress distribution around the connection were investigated. According to the result of numerical analysis, as the length of the cross section of column in the direction of lateral load increases and gravity load increases, the effective area and the maximum shear strength providing the torsional resistance decrease considerably. And as the slab span loaded with relatively large gravity load increases, the negative moment around the connection increases and therefore the strength of connection against unbalanced moment decreases. By considering the effect of design parameters on the strength of the connections, the effective shear strength to calculate the torsional moment capacity of connection was proposed and the effectiveness of the proposed shear strength was verified.

An experimental investigation to determine the transfer length of a seven-wire prestressing strand in different concretes is presented in this paper. A testing technique based on the analysis of bond behaviour by means of measuring the force supported by the prestressing strand on a series of specimens with different embedment lengths has been used. An analytical bond model to calculate the transfer length from an inelastic bond stress distribution along the transfer length has been obtained. A relationship between the plastic bond stress for transfer length and the concrete compressive strength at the time of prestress transfer has been found. An equation to predict the average and both the lower bound and the upper bound values of transfer length is proposed. The experimental results have not only been compared with the theoretical prediction from proposed equations in the literature, but also with experimental results obtained by several researchers.
The structural behavior of reinforced concrete coupled shear wall structures is greatly influenced by the behavior of their coupling beams. This paper presents a process of the seismic analysis of reinforced concrete coupled shear wall-frame system linked by hysteretic dampers at each floor. The hysteretic dampers are located at the middle portion of the linked beams which most of the inelastic damage would be concentrated. This study concerned particularly with wall-frame structures that do not twist. The proposed method, which is based on the energy equilibrium method, offers an important design method by the result of increasing energy dissipation capacity and reducing damage to the wall's base. The optimum distribution of yield shear force coefficients is to evenly distribute the damage at dampers over the structural height based on the cumulative plastic deformation ratio of the dissipation device. Nonlinear dynamic analysis indicates that, with a proper set of damping parameters, the wall's dynamic responses can be well controlled. Finally, based on the total plastic strain energy and its trend through the height of the buildings, a prediction equation is suggested.

This paper demonstrates the potential application of machine learning algorithms for approximate prediction of the load and deflection capacities of the novel type of Laced Steel Concrete-Composite (LSCC) beams proposed by Anandavalli et al. (Engineering Structures 2012). Initially, global and local responses measured on LSCC beam specimen in an experiment are used to validate nonlinear FE model of the LSCC beams. The data for the machine learning algorithms is then generated using validated FE model for a range of values of the identified sensitive parameters. The performance of four well-known machine learning algorithms, viz., Support Vector Regression (SVR), Minimax Probability Machine Regression (MPMR), Relevance Vector Machine (RVM) and Multigene Genetic Programing (MGGP) for the approximate estimation of the load and deflection capacities are compared in terms of well-defined error indices. Through relative comparison of the estimated values, it is demonstrated that the algorithms explored in the present study provide a good alternative to expensive experimental testing and sophisticated numerical simulation of the response of LSCC beams. The load carrying and displacement capacity of the LSCC was predicted well by MGGP and MPMR, respectively.

It is difficult to form a rational strut-tie model that represents a true load transfer mechanism of structural concrete with disturbed stressed region(s). To overcome the difficulty and handle numerous load cases with just one strut-tie model, a two-dimensional grid strut-tie model method was proposed previously. However, the validity of the method was not fully examined, although the incorporated basic concepts and new methods regarding the effective strength of concrete strut, load carrying capacity of struts and ties, and geometrical compatibility of grid strut-tie model were explained in detail. In this study, for accurate strength analysis and reliable design of reinforced concrete deep beams, the appropriateness of the two-dimensional grid strut-tie model method is verified. For this, the failure strength of 237 reinforced concrete deep beams, tested to shear failure, is predicted by the two-dimensional grid strut-tie model method, and the results are compared with those obtained by the sectional shear design methods and conventional strut-tie model methods of current design codes.
