The Effect of the Thermal Stress on the Mechanical Behaviour and Permeability of Rocks -1.mechanical Bechviour (열응력이 암석의 역학적 거동과 투수성에 미치는 영향 -I. 역학적 거동)

  • Pocheon granite specimens were thermally treated with cycles of predetermined temperatures ranging 2$0^{\circ}C$ to $600^{\circ}C$. Characterization of thermally-induced microcracks were carried out using optical microscopy and their effect on the various physical & mechanical properties were studied. Generally. uniaxial compressive strength, Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio, elastic wave velocity and specific gravity were found to decrease with increasing temperature. From 30$0^{\circ}C$ upwards, negative lateral strains were observed, which resulted in negative Poisson's ratio. Dynamic Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio were found to be generally most sensitive indicators to thermal cracking.

Numerical simulation of complex hexagonal structures to predict drop behavior under submerged and fluid flow conditions

  • This study simulated a control rod assembly (CRA), which is a part of reactor shutdown systems, in immersed and fluid flow conditions. The CRA was inserted into the reactor core within a predetermined time limit under normal and abnormal operating conditions, and the CRA (which consists of complex geometric shapes) drop behavior is numerically modeled for simulation. A full-scale prototype CRA drop test is established under room temperature and water-fluid conditions for verification and validation. This paper describes the details of the numerical modeling and analysis results of the several conditions. Results from the developed numerical simulation code are compared with the test results to verify the numerical model and developed computer code. The developed code is in very good agreement with the test results and this numerical analysis model and method may replace the experimental and CFD method to predict the drop behavior of CRA.

  • In this study, we investigate the variation in microstruture and mechanical property of austenitic 316L stainless steel during long-term material degradation. To simulate the material degradation, the AISI 316 steel was exposed to accelerate under a temperature of 600℃ for up to 10000 hours at each predetermined heat treatment time. As the long-term material degradation time increase, the grain shape was changed from polygonal grains with annealing twins to circular grains. Most twins distributed uniformly interior of grains are recovered and disappered with long-term material degradation. Also, the δ ferrite along grain boundaries decomposed and transformed into the σ phase resulting in decrease of elongation of austenitic 316L stainless steel.

  • Recently, door locks have become popular. However, it is often more difficult to recognize the vulnerability of the door lock than to recognize it as more convenient and secure than a mechanical key. Therefore, in this study, the function of the door lock was improved and the weak points were reinforced. Door lock is vulnerable to heat when a fire occurs, so that the door may not open. Therefore, the door is automatically opened when the internal temperature of the fire site exceeds a predetermined temperature by attaching a heat sensor. In the room, the door was automatically opened without having to press the password. Through the proposed function, it can be expected to prevent the casualties in case of fire.

  • Rubber materials are widely used for anti-vibration in various industries such as railways, automobile, and aviation. However, various factors hinder the accurate prediction of mechanical properties and lifetime of these materials. Particularly, a stress softening phenomenon Mullins effect greatly affects the accuracy of test results by reducing the initial peak stress. Although the Mullins effect has been studied previously, research on its temperature dependence is lacking. In this study, we performed experiments to estimate the temperature dependence of the Mullins effect. Dumbbell specimens made of natural rubber (NR65) was mounted on a stress softening tester and placed in a heat chamber, where they were tested at temperature of 25, 50, and $80^{\circ}C$. Further, five test sets, each consisting of 10 loading/unloading cycles were sequentially performed at predetermined time intervals. Based on the test results, we assessed the effect of temperature and time interval on stress softening and recovery.

Computation of Temperature Rising by Absorbed Power Radiated from a Portable Phone (휴대폰 전파인 인제 흡수전력량과 온도 상승량 산출)

  • Absorbed power of the human head radiated from a 900 MHz portable phone and temperature rise are computed using FDTD(Finite-Difference Time-Domain) method. For this computation the 5 layered media for the human head modeling and the monopole antenna attached to metallic box for the portable phone are used. To reflect the real circumstances typical sizes of human heads and portable phones are considered in the calculation. The length of monopole antenna is 8.15 cm, and the output power of a phone is 600 mW. Under the predetermined model the distribution of 1 g, 10 g averaged SAR and temperature rise rate over the human head are calculated, from which it was found that the position of maximum SAR is near at the head skin surface, not deep places far into the head. The position of the highest temperature is located far from the head skin more than that of the maximum SAR occured. The averaged SAR and temperature along the distance between the head and phone are calculated according to seperation distance between the head and phone.

Comparison of the Fatigue Behaviors of FRP Bridge Decks and Reinforced Concrete Conventional Decks Under Extreme Environmental Conditions

  • This paper summarizes the results of the fatigue test of four composite bridge decks in extreme temperatures (-30$^{\circ}C$ and 50$^{\circ}C$ ). The work was performed as part of a research program to evaluate and install multiple FRP bridge deck systems in Dayton, Ohio. A two-span continuous concrete deck was also built on three steel girders for the benchmark tests. Simulated wheel loads were applied simultaneously at two points by two servo-controlled hydraulic actuators specially designed and fabricated to perform under extreme temperatures. Each deck was initially subjected to one million wheel load cycles at low temperature and another one million cycles at high temperature. The results presented in this paper correspond to the fatigue response of each deck for four million load cycles at low temperature and another four million cycles at high temperature. Thus, the deck was subjected to a total of ten million cycles. Quasi-static load-deflection and load-strain responses were determined at predetermined fatigue cycle levels. Except for the progressive reduction in stiffness, no significant distress was observed in any of the composite deck prototypes during ten million load cycles. The effects of extreme temperatures and accumulated load cycles on the load-deflection and load-strain response of FRP composite and FRP-concrete hybrid bridge decks are discussed based on the experimental results.

A Study on Measurements of Autoignition and Activation Energy of Superabsorbent Polymers (고흡수성 중합체의 자연발화와 활성화에너지 측정에 관한 연구)

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to obtain experimental data for the establishment of preventive measures against fire, as large and small fire accidents occur at production and storage sites of superabsorbent polymers developed for the convenience of daily life. Method: The sample container was fixed at 0.2m in both length and width, and was shaped into a rectangular cuboid with heights of 3cm, 5cm, 7cm, and 14cm to access an infinite flat plane. The sample container was fixed in the center of a thermostatic bath that was heated to a predetermined temperature according to a preset temperature control program. If the central temperature of the sample rose more than 20℃ above the set temperature, it was determined to have 'ignited', and if it remained similar to the set temperature, it was determined to have 'unignited'. Result: The critical autoignition temperature was calculated to be 212.5℃ for a sample container with a height of 3cm, 202.5℃ for 5cm, 192.5℃ for 7cm, and 177.5℃ for 14cm. The ignition induction time to reach the highest temperature was approximately 42hours for 3cm, 91hours for 5cm, 151hours for 7cm, and 300hours for 14cm. Conclusion:① As the size of the sample container increased, the autoignition temperature decreased and the ignition induction time to reach the highest temperature increased. ② The apparent activation energy was calculated to be 39.30kcal/mol, with a correlation of 99.5%.

An experimental study on the static behavior of advanced composite materials drainage pipe member for an undersea tunnel (해저터널용 복합신소재 배수복합관 부재의 정적거동에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • In order to design an advanced composite materials drainage pipe structures for an undersea tunnel, mechanical properties for the lamina types of the structural member must be predetermined. It is also reported that the size effect of the specimen is significant. In this study the tensile tests for the lamina types of the structural member are conducted at the room temperature ($20^{\circ}C$) and the seawater temperature ($0^{\circ}C$). In addition, the mechanical properties are predicted by theory based on the rule of mixtures and elasticity solution technique. The predicted mechanical properties are compared with test results obtained by a test method. In the design of an advanced composite materials drainage pipe structural members for an undersea tunnel, the used mechanical properties must be applied at the room temperature with considering the modified factors. These are to be offered the datum for the design an advanced composite materials drainage pipe structures for an undersea tunnel.

Chemorheological Behavior of Cyanate Ester Resin and Properties of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer Composites (시아네이트 에스터 수지의 화학유변학적 거동 및 탄소섬유강화 고분자 복합재료의 물성)

  • Carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites consist of carbon fibers in a polymer matrix. Recently, CFRP composites having high thermal stability and low outgassing are finding their use in high performance materials for aerospace and electronics applications under high temperature and high vacuum conditions. Cyanate ester resin is one of the most suitable matrix resins for this purpose. In this study, proper combination of cyanate ester and catalyst, curing behavior, and cure cycle were determined by chemorheology. Optimum condition was found to be catalyst content of 100 ppm and curing temperature of $150^{\circ}C$. Thermal stability and outgassing of cured resin composition were analyzed and the results showed thermal decomposition temperature of $385^{\circ}C$ and total mass loss of 0.29%. The CFRP prepregs and subsequent composites were fabricated by predetermined resin composition and the cure condition. Tensile moduli of the composites were compared with theoretical models and the results were very consistent.
