  • High-precision centerless grinding machines are emerging as a means of finishing the outer diameter grinding process required for ferrules, which are widely used as fiber optic connectors. In this study, a structural characteristic analysis and evaluation were carried out using a virtual prototype of a centerless grinding machine to realize systematic design technology and performance improvements required to manufacture ferrules. The prototype consisted of a concrete-filled bed, hydrostatic grinding wheel (GW) and regulating wheel (RW) spindle systems, a hydrostatic RW feed mechanism, a RW swivel mechanism, and on-machine GW and RW dressers. The loop stiffness values of the centerless grinding machine were estimated based on the relative displacements between the GW and RW caused by grinding forces. The simulated results illustrated that a concrete-filled bed considerably improved the structural stiffness and accuracy of a high-precision centerless grinding machine.

  • A cam profile CNC grinding machine is developed for manufacture of high precision contoured cams. The developed machine is composed of the high precision spindle using boll bearings, the high stiffness box layer type bed and the three axis CNC controller with the high resolution AC servo motor. In this paper, structural and modal analysis for the developed machine is carried out to check the design criteria of the machine. The analysis is carried out by FEM simulation using the commercial software, CATIA V5. The machine is modeled by placing proper shell and solid finite elements. And also, this paper presents the measurement system and experimental investigation on the modal analysis of a grinding machine. The weak part of the machine is found by the experimental evaluation. The results provide structure modification data for good dynamic behaviors. And safety of the machine was confirmed by the modal analysis of modified machine design. Finally, the cam profile grinding machine was successfully developed.

  • Recently, a high-precision ball screw is an essential part of high-speed machines. However, producing high-precision ball screws has been costly and time-consuming. Nowadays, a whirling machine is used to produce high-precision ball screws efficiently. Rotating multi-tips are used to turn the ball screw in the whirling machine. In this study, a structural analysis was performed by a finite-element method to develop a whirling machine. An improved model of the whirling machine was proposed by the analysis. In addition, a thermal analysis was performed to confirm the thermal stability. The results of the analysis can be applied in order to further develop the whirling machine.

  • Virtual machine tools have been magnified recently as manufacturers could estimate performances of machine tools before design and manufacturing of them. However, it requires much time and efforts to make FEM models and predict precision of machine tools well because machine tools are composed of many joints such as bolt joints, LM joints, rotational bearing joints and mounts. Especially, we have studied computational modeling methods of bolt joints to predict precision of machine tools well in this paper. Stiffness and damping coefficients of bolt joints are investigated and generalized with respect to fasten forces through experiments and FEM analysis. Matrix 27 element of ANSYS is used and bolt joints are simplified as square areas with 8 nodes to apply stiffness and damping simultaneously. Additionally, coordinate transformation of matrix 27 for bolt joints is induced to apply to skewed bolt joints of machine tools and evaluate it using FEM analysis.

  • We have investigated experimentally a nano patterning using electron beam lithography for the nickel stamper fabrication. Recently, DVD and Blu-ray disk(BD) have nano-scale patterns in order to increase the storage density. Specially, BD has 100nm-scale patterns which are generally fabricated by electron beam lithography. In this paper, we found optimum condition of electron-beam lithography for 100nm-scale patterning. We controlled various conditions of EHP(acceleration voltage), beam current, dose and aperture size in order to obtain optimum conditions. We used 100nm-thick PMMA layer on a silicon wafer as photoresist. We found that EHP was the most dominant factor in electron-beam lithography.

  • This paper presents the results of miniaturized micro milling machine tool development for micro precision machining process. Finite element analysis has been performed to know the relationship between design dimensional variables and structural stiffness in terms of static, dynamic, thermal aspects. Design optimization has been performed to optimize the design variables of micro machine tool to minimize the volume, weight and deformation of machine tool structure and to maximize the stiffness in terms of static, dynamic, and thermal characteristics. This study presents the assessment of the technology incentive for the minimization of machine tool in the quantitative context of static, dynamic stiffness, thermal resistance and thus the accuracy implications.

  • This paper presents the development of ultra-precision machining process of large aspheric aluminum mirrors with a maximum diameter of 620 mm. An ultra-precision machine, "Nanoturn60", developed by Daewoo Heavy Industries Ltd. is used for machining and motion errors of the machine are compensated by using the FTS developed by IAE(Institue for Advanced Engineering) during the machining process. To check the form accuracy of machined aspheric surfaces, on-machine form measurement system is developed. This measurement system consists of air bearing touch probe, straight edge, and laser sensor. With in-process error compensation by FTS(Fast Tool Servo), aspheric mirrors with the from accuracy of submicron order are obtained. obtained.

  • The outer diameter finishing grinding process required for ferrules, which are widely used as fiber optic connectors, is carried out by high-precision centerless grinding machines. In this study, the thermal characteristics of such a machine, for example, the temperature distribution, temperature rise, and thermal deformation, were estimated based on a virtual prototype and the heat generation rates of heat sources related to normal operating conditions. The prototype consisted of a concrete-filled bed. hydrostatic grinding wheel (GW) and regulating wheel (RW) spindle systems, a hydrostatic RW feed mechanism, a RW swivel mechanism, and on-machine GW and RW dressers. The reliability of the predicted results was demonstrated using temperature characteristics measured from a physical prototype. The predicted and measured results indicated that this particular high-precision centerless grinding machine had very stable thermal characteristics.
