In order to understand the precipitation acidity and chemical composition of ion species in Iksan area as well as to know the difference of chemical characteristics in precipitation samples from the viewpoint of precipitation sampling method, precipitation samples were collected by wet-only automatic precipitation sampler and bulk manual precipitation sampler in Iksan, from March 2003 to August 2003. The mean pH of precipitation was 5.0. There was a little significant difference in the mean value of pH between automatic and manual sampler. However, pH values of some precipitation samples were lower in automatic sampler than in manual sampler, especially in case of precipitation samples with small rainfall for March 2003. The mean concentrations of each ions in precipitation were generally a little higher in precipitation samples collected by the manual sampler than in those collected by the automatic sampler because of accumulation of dry deposition on the surface of glass funnel installed at the manual sampler during the sampling period or no rainfall. Dominant species determining the acidity of precipitation, were N $H_4$$^{[-10]}$ and nss-C $a^{2+}$ for cations and nss-S $O_4$$^{2-}$ and N $O_3$$^{[-10]}$ for anions. The mean concentration of N $H_4$$^{+}$ and nss-C $a^{2+}$ were 31 $\mu$eq/L and 9 $\mu$eq/L for the automatic sampler and 40 ueq/L and 16 ueq/L for the manual sampler, respectively. In addition, nss-S $O_4$$^{2-}$ and N $O_3$$^{[-10]}$ were 27 $\mu$eq/L and 13 $\mu$eq/L for the automatic sampler and 32 $\mu$eq/L and 17 $\mu$eq/L for the manual sampler, respectively. Although the concentrations of the acidifying ions of nss-S $O_4$$^{2-}$ and N $O_3$$^{[-10]}$ were about 3 times higher than those for foreign pristine sites, precipitation acidity were estimated to be natural due to the neutralization reaction of the alkaline species of N $H_4$$^{+}$ and nss-C $a^{2+}$ with its higher concentrations. Considering the ratios of nss-S $O_4$$^{2-}$/N $O_4$$^{[-10]}$ nss-S $O_4$$^{2-}$, it was found that ammonium sulphate was dominant in Iksan precipitation. The major non-sea salt ions were maximum concentrations for March, but decreased with increasing of precipitation amount.on amount.

This study was conducted to investigate the chemical characteristics of Precipitation at Seoul, Yangpyong, Hongchon and Inje in the central part of Korean peninsula during the period from March 1994 to November 1997. The precipitation samples were collected by automatic wet-only sampler. The samples were analyzed for major anions (SO42-, NO3-, Cl-, F-) and cations(NH4+, Ca2+, Mg+, Na+, K+), in addition to acidity and electrical conductivity. The analytical instrument for water soluble ionic components was ion chromatography. The volume - weighted mean PH were 4.73, 4.87, 4.89 and 4.81 at Seoul, Yangpyong, Hongchon and Inje, respectively. The sums of cation concentrations was slightly greater than the sums of anion concentrations. Also, the highest ion component was SO42- in anions and NH4+ in cations. The mean equivalent ratios of SO42- to NO3- were found by 2.96, 2.71, 2.43 and 2.25 at Seoul, Yangpyong, Hongchon and Inje, respectively. The factor analysis was conducted in order to make the large and diverse data set as manageable levels and to qualitatively examine the relationship between the variables. It showed that major sources of pollutants in precipitation were from the anthropogenic in Seoul, the natural in Hongchon, and the anthropogenic and natural in Yangpyong and Inje.
This study is an attempt to investigate the chemical components of precipitation and its variation according to surface wind. Precipitation samples were collected by an wet-only precipitation sampler during the period of October 1994 to September 1995 at Kyungsan in Korea. The results obtained in t체s study are summerized as follows. The annual average of precipitation pH is 5.0, the highest month of pH is July of 5.5, and the lowest month of pH is December of 4.4. The most frequent appearance is in the range of pH 5.0 to 5.5 and its rate is 56.8%, The order of ion concentration In precipitation is SO42->NO3->Cl- in case of anion and $Ca^{2+}$>$NH_4^{+}$>$Na^+$>$Mg^{2+}$ in case of cation. It is found from our analysis that the correlation coefficient among the precipitation pH and ion components is below r=0.3, while the correlation coefficient between $SO_4^{2-}$ and NO_3^{-}$, $Na^+$ and $Cl^+$ is above r=0.8, respectively. The mean pH of precipitation is 4.8 under the westerly wind and 5.2 under the easterly wind. The concentrations of anion and cation under the westerly wind are more than the concentrations under the easterly wind. In autumn, the concentration of Na+ and $Cl^+$ under the easterly wind are higher than the concentration under the westerly wind. The correlation coefficients between wind speed and pH, ion components show very low correlation of -0.41 r 0.2. But the present study show that the correlation coefficient between wind speed and pH of precipitation is positive and the correlation coefficients between wind speed and ion concentration is negative.

Precipitation samples were collected by a wet-only automatic acid precipitation sampler at Kangwha island on the western coast in Korea, through January until December 1992. pH, electric conductivity and the concentrations of major water-soluble ion components such as N $H_{4}$$^{+}$, $Ca^{2+}$, $K^{+}$, $Mg^{2+}$, N $a^{+}$, N $O_{3}$$^{[-10]}$ , S $O_{4}$$^{2-}$ and C $l^{[-10]}$ were measured. From the result of checking the validity for assesment of pollution level of precipitation samples by pH using correlation analysis between pH and major components, and t-test of chemical composition between acid rain and non-acid rain, pH proved to be not satisfactory for its pillution level. A more comprehensive method is therefore required. In order to estimate the monthly analytical result of chemical composition of precipitation samples comprehensively, a cluster analysis was used among the various multivariate statistical analysis. As a result of making a cluster analysis for separating the monthly precipitation samples into homogeneous patterns by setting the concentrations of nine major water-soluble ion components as a variable, three homogeneous patterns were obtained. The first pattern was a group of months having average ion concentrations, the second a guoup of months having low ion concentration, and the third a group of months having high ion concentrations. Thus, it was indicated that the pollution level of precipitation was higher on February and lower on May, June, August and September than the other months. As a result, this analysis method could be estimated the chemical coposition of precipitation regionally as well as monthly.monthly.

In order to investigate the chemical components of acid precipitation at Kangwha near the Yellow Sea and Seoul in Korea, the precipitation samples were collected by wetonly precipitation sampler from February 1991 to January 1992, and pH, electric conductivity(E. C.) and major water-soluble ionic components were analyzed. Strong negative linear correlations were observed between the rainfall amount and the sum of major ionic components in $\mu eq/\ell$ at two sites. The sum of major ionic components also correlated negatively with rain intensity. The analytical results of precipitation samples at two sites were compared each other. Average values of volume-weighted pH were found to be 5.21 at Kangwha and 5.09 at Seoul. The cationic abundance($\mu eq/\ell$) in rainwater showed the general trend $NH_4^+ > Na^+ > Ca^{2+} > Mg^{2-+} > H^+ > K^+$ at Kangwah and $NH_4^+ > Ca^{2+} > Na^+ > H^+ > Mg^{2+} > K^+$ at Seoul. The anionic abundance showed the general trend $SO_4^{2-} > Cl^- > NO_3^-$ at Kangwha and $SO_4^{2-} > NO_3^- > Cl^-$ at Seoul. The concentrations of seasalt such as $Na^+ and Cl^-$ were higher at Kangwha than Seoul. The concentrations of $nss-SO_4^{2-}, nss-Cl^- and NO_3^-$ which are acid composition were higher at Seoul(96.3 $\mu eq/\ell$) than Kangwha(69.0 $\mu eq/\ell$). The contribution of seasalt to the composition of precipitation were higher at Kangwha(34.1%) than Seoul(15.7%). Ammonia and calcium species in rainwater at Kangwha and Seoul are interpreted to have 91% of neutralizing capacity of the original sulfuric and nitric acids. Provided that the precipitation acidity originates primarily from sulfate and nitrate, sulfate was found to contribute about 73-75% of the free precipitation acidity.
In order to ensure that all major cations and anions were accurately measured, the quality assurance checks of chemical analysis data by considering ion and conductivity balance of each precipitation sample were performed. To check the quality assurance of chemical analysis data, precipitation samples were collected by wet- only precipitation sampler at Seoul site and their chemical components were analyzed. By checking the problems for the screening methods of chemical analysis data used until recently, the f value expressed as the ratio of the sum of cations and anions equivalent concentration( $\Sigma $C/$\Sigma $A ) was found to be not ap priorate for data screening. Also, the scattering plot between cation and anion equivalent concentrations in each sample was found to show the general tendency of ion balance but was proved to not quantitate the standard of data screening at a set of samples of various concentration levels.4 more appropriate value was therefore required, h value is defined as (A-C)/C for C≥A and ( A-C)/A for C<4. This value was showed to check the ion balance in a viewpoint of quantitative as well as qualitative and to be useful in applying this expression to a measurement data set. However, the standard o( data screening must vary in response to the ion concentration of sample. In this study, the quality assurance of chemical analysis data was checked by considering both the ion balance evaluating by h value and the electrical conductivity. As these quality assurance checks were applied to Seoul data serf 67 valid samples were obtained. The result of statistical summary in the analytical parameter of precipitation samples collected for a certain period was found to be computed in the precipitation volume- weighted mean( VWM) rather than the arithmetic mean( AM), but PH In the VWM of hydrogen ion concentration. The annual VWM of pH values was 5.0(4.9 ∼ 5.1).
This study was conducted to clarify runoff production processes in forested catchment through hydrograph separation using three-component mixing model based on the End Member Mixing Analysis (EMMA) model. The study area is located in the coniferous-forested experimental catchment, Gwangneung Gyeonggido near Seoul, Korea (N 37 45', E 127 09'). This catchment is covered by Pinus Korainensis and Abies holophylla planted at stocking rate of 3,000 trees $ha^{-1}$ in 1976. Thinning and pruning were carried out two times in the spring of 1996 and 2004 respectively. We monitored 8 successive events during the periods from June 15 to September 15, 2005. Throughfall, soil water and groundwater were sampled by the bulk sampler. Stream water was sampled every 2-hour through ISCO automatic sampler for 48 hours. The geochemical tracers were determined in the result of principal components analysis. The concentrations of $SO_4{^{2-}$ and $Na^+$ for stream water almost were distributed within the bivariate plot of the end members; throughfall, soil water and groundwater. Average contributions of throughfall, soil water and groundwater on producing stream flow for 8 events were 17%, 25% and 58% respectively. The amount of antecedent precipitation (AAP) plays an important role in determining which end members prevail during the event. It was found that ground water contributed more to produce storm runoff in the event of a small AAP compared with the event of a large AAP. On the other hand, rain water showed opposite tendency to ground water. Rain water in storm runoff may be produced by saturation overland flow occurring in the areas where soil moisture content is near saturation. AAP controls the producing mechanism for storm runoff whether surface or subsurface flow prevails.
Isotopic compositions of precipitation have been used to understand moisture transport in the atmosphere and interactions between precipitation and groundwater. Isotopic compositions of speleothems and ice cores, so called, ''paleoarchives'', can be utilized to interpret climate of the past and global circulation models (GCMs). The GCMs are able to explain the paleoarchives, can be validated by the precipitation isotopes. The developments of stable isotope analyzers make high-resolution isotopic studies feasible. Therefore, a high-resolution study of precipitation isotopes is needed. For this study, precipitation samples were collected for every 5 to 15 minutes, depending on precipitation rates, using an auto-sampler for precipitation isotopes near coastal area. The isotopic compositions of precipitation range from -5.7‰ (-40.1‰) to -10.8‰ (-74.3‰) for oxygen (hydrogen). The slope of ${\delta}^{18}O-{\delta}D$ diagram for the whole period is 6.8, but that of each storm is 5.1, 4.2, 7.9 and 7.7, respectively. It indicates that evaporation occurred during the first two storms, while the latter two storm did not experience any evaporation. The isotopic fractionations of precipitation has significant implications for the water cycle and high-resolution data of precipitation isotopes will be needed for the future studies.
In this paper, we consider a seemingly unrelated regression (SUR) model and propose a nonparametric Bayesian approach to SUR with a Dirichlet process mixture of normals for modeling an unknown error distribution. Posterior distributions are derived based on the proposed model, and the posterior inference is performed via Markov chain Monte Carlo methods based on the collapsed Gibbs sampler of a Dirichlet process mixture model. We present a simulation study to assess the performance of the model. We also apply the model to precipitation data over South Korea.

Recently a passive $NO_2$ samplers have been frequently used for the measurement of $NO_2$ concentration in the atmosphere because of its simplicity and high accuracy. But these samplers have a defect that the amount of $NO_2$ adsorbed is increased by wind. In this study, the inlet of sampler was covered with a draft shield made by 325 mesh stainless sieve to eliminate the effect. But it was expected that $NO_2$ diffusion was interrupted by the draft shield. In order to conform this phenomenon, samplers with and without draft shield were exposed to a box filled with 1-1.1ppm $NO_2$. The result indicated that draft shield nearly did not disturb $NO_2$ diffusion. To protect samplers from dust, sunshine, precipitation and vertical wind effects, these samplers were placed into a shelter during the field test. The data obtained in this study was compared with the data from the ambient air monitoring network. The coefficient of correlation(r) between the two data was 0.9995 for the test period of up to 35days. The results of this study indicate that the type of $NO_2$ samplers with draft shield in shelter used in this study can be used for measuring $NO_2$ concentrations in the ambient air relatively for a long period over 30 days.
