Trends in Mobile Network Energy-Saving Technology (모바일 네트워크 에너지 절감 기술 동향)

  • Energy efficiency is an important factor toward sustainable future mobile network systems. As the size of the 5G mobile network system increases, the consumption and costs of energy increase. Accordingly, energy-saving optimization has become a major process in network systems, and various related technologies for energy saving are being developed. We provide a brief review of the technical trends in energy saving in 3GPP 5G & 5G Advanced systems and O-RAN systems. We focus on power models and energy-saving technologies in various resource domains of 3GPP 5G & 5G Advanced systems and energy-saving use cases of O-RAN systems.

Design and Implementation of PLC Automatic Welding System with Power-saving (전력 절약형 PLC 자동용접 시스템 설계 및 구현)

  • The welding technology has been used in almost all industries such as automotive, shipbuilding, power plants and industrial machinery. In this study, the design and implementation of PLC $CO_2$ welding automation system were investigated. For these purposes, the structure analysis for driving supporter was performed and specification of automatic voltage regulator, mutual interface of system and circuit diagram were designed in order to contrive power-saving system. As the results, the stability of design for driving supporter could be convinced by numerical analysis and PLC automatic welding system was suitable for welding automation of structural-manufacturing factory capable of producing various and small amount products. Therefore, it was confirmed that PLC $CO_2$ welding automation system could contribute to productivity, stable quality and power-saving.

  • In this paper, we propose a Cross-Layer Transmission Architecture (CLTA) to support power saving high-speed multimedia services in mobile ad-hoc wireless sensor networks(MAWSN). The main goals of this paper are in showing and proposing how the routing routes are decided on route stability based on mobility of mobile nodes to increase the operational lifetime of routes as well as how the transmit power can be saved in mobile ad-hoc wireless sensor networks. To obtain these goals, we propose a cross-layer architecture strategy which combines network layer technology with physical layer technology to get synergy effects in the view of transmission power saving. We consider a realistic approach, in the points of view of the MAWSN, based on mobile sensor nodes as well as fixed sensor nodes in sensor fields while the conventional research for sensor networks focus on mainly fixed sensor nodes. The performance evaluation of the proposed CLTA is performed via simulation and analysis.

  • This paper proposes a performance evaluation method for power consumption of set-top box (STB) stand-by mode transition schemes. A stand-by mode transition scheme characterizes the timing of mode transition. The timing of mode transition affects the duration of stand-by mode operation, and the power consumptions of STB as well. Recently a fast stand-by mode transition scheme (FMT) has been proposed based on user input for selecting the device to be connected to TV. In this paper, we evaluate power consumption of FMT and a conventional mode transition scheme. For the computation of the duration of stand-by mode operation, the user input events are modeled as Poisson process. Simulation results based on the modeling reveals that the proposed scheme is more effective in power saving than the conventional scheme by up to 30%.

  • DVB-H (Digital Video Broadcasting for Handhold) is a new standard, currently being developed, which defines mobile enhancements for the DVB-T (DVB-Terrestrial) standard. For the reception of service via mobile handhold devices, seamless mobility and power saving are essential requirements of DVB-H. For seamless handover, the receiver should monitor neighboring cells and it increases the power consumption. And so, power efficient handover scheme to support both mobility and power saving is required. In this paper, we propose cell searching scheme to reduce power consumption by reducing the number of frequency scanning during the handover. Through the numerical evaluation, we analyzethe performance of handover schemes.

  • Reduction of power consumption has been a major issue and an interesting challenge to maximize the lifetime of wireless sensor networks. We investigate the practical meaning of N-policy in queues as a power saving technique in a WSN. We consider the N-policy of a finite M/M/1 queue. We formulate the optimization problem of power consumption considering the packet loss probability. We analyze the trade-off between power consumption and the packet loss probability and demonstrate the operational characteristics of N-policy as a power saving technique in a WSN with various numerical examples.

Electric energy saving system with high speed response to load variation using power-factor correction (부하변동에 속응하는 역률개선형 전력절감시스템)

  • Small type electric energy saving system is proposed in this paper. The system improves power factor fastly according to load variation of each customer. Phases of voltage and current are detected as 1[ms] unit. Phase coincident algorithm is applied for power factor improvement. Capacitance is controlled for optimal power factor correction. Series reactor is controlled for harmonics reduction. Non-contact device is used for fast response and long life. Test result shows the effect of this system. Power factor of 40[W] electric fan is improved from 95[%] to 100[%]. In the case of electric light, power factor is improved from 82[%] to 100[%]. Response time for load variation is less than 1[ms].

  • This paper presents an advanced energy saving algorithm in building. It is important to aggregate a various demand side resource which is controllable on demand response environment. Previous demand side algorithm for building is restricted on peak power. In this paper, we suggest duty cycle algorithm for AHU on demand response to reduce the quantity of building power consumption. The test results show that the proposed algorithm is very effective.

  • This paper presents an effective energy saving algorithm for lighting control systems using M&V method in various buildings and factories. It is important to aggregate a various demand side resource which is controllable at the peak power time to reduce the energy cost. Previous demand side algorithm appropriate for building is based on peak power. In this paper, we develop the new energy saving algorithm using M&V method to reduce the quantity of power consumption. The simulation results show that the proposed method is very effective.

  • This paper presents an energy saving hydrostatic pressure exchanger for sea water desalination equipment. In a reverse osmosis(RO) system for desalinating sea water, more than 70 percent of the supplied sea water, brines which were impassable through RO membrane are bypassed, resulting in high energy losses. In this paper, a hydrostatic pressure exchanger consisting of an embedded water hydraulic piston motor and a water hydraulic piston pump was proposed and investigated in order to recover the energy of the bypassed brines. The pressurized brines are supplied to the embedded water hydraulic piston motor as power sources and the water hydraulic piston pump is driven by the output torque of the embedded water hydraulic piston motor as well as electric motor. Consequently, the energy of the bypassed brines can be recovered. To examine the electric energy saving characteristics of the hydrostatic pressure exchanger, a simulation model was constructed using commercial software and experiments were conducted. Through the results of simulation and experiment, the feasibility of the electric energy saving effect of the proposed hydrostatic pressure exchanger was investigated.
