Active and Reactive Power Control of ESS in Distribution System for Improvement of Power Smoothing Control

  • This paper proposes a new control technique of energy storage system (ESS) for smoothing the active power of renewable energy sources (RES) such as photovoltaic and wind turbine generation. As the penetration of RES into grid increases, it is difficult to maintain the permissible level of power quality, that is, voltage and frequency fluctuation in power systems. To solve this problem, ESS control methods using low pass filter (LPF) have been proposed for mitigating the fluctuation of RES output. However, those have a lot of drawbacks which need to be supplemented. Hence, this paper presents the improved active power control with additional reactive power control for maintaining power quality properly. The proposed method minimizes the capacity of ESS to be required for smoothing RES output fluctuation through mitigation of phase delay problem in LPF. In addition, the voltage regulation improves by using additional reactive power control. The proposed method was verified through simulation analysis using PSCAD/EMTDC.

선박에 있어서의 내연기관구동발전기의 속도안정도에 관한 연구

  • The speed characteristics of the diesel engines driving alternators are very important because it is directly concerned to the quality of electric power especially when electric power is supplied by a single alternator. In this paper, the speed characteristics of th diesel engine, equipped with a centrifugal mechanical governor, driving an alternator is dealt when load changes stepwise. The all coefficients included in the block diagram of the speed control system are estimated by actual experiments and the effects of gain change of the governor in the speed characteristics are examined theoretically and experimentally. The obtained result seems to be satisfactory and very useful for the improvement of quality of electric power supplied by a single alternator driven by the diesel engine especially for electric power system of ships.

  • The industrial products to use single phase inverter are raised the necessity of power quality improvement, such as AC Motor Driver, Lighting, Renewable energy power converter. Also, it is increasing that applied the single phase multilevel inverter for high quality power at renewable energy power converter. Especially, the photovoltaic multilevel inverters have at least more than two DC_Link and more than one DC/DC Converter. This paper proposes a triple output DC/DC Converter with one switch for photovoltaic multilevel inverter. The proposed converter has advantages of low cost and volume because it has one switch. The operation principle of the converter is analyzed and verified. A prototype is implemented to verify of the proposed converter.

  • We investigate the outage probability in terms of QoS (quality of service) in indoor PLC network. We consider various kinds of appliances for realistic indoor PLC network. For estimation of the outage probability, we calculate the time-varying channel responses considering the loading conditions based on regular human activities and include the additive noise. We calculate the outage probability for each terminal and investigate relationship between the outage probability and the channel length, and transmit powers. Our results suggest that the outage probability is increased when the channel length becomes longer because more appliances affect the amount of reduced channel capacity and is not improved distinctly for very high and low outage threshold by increasing the transmit power. However, we can see outage probability improvement for 30% outage threshold case by increasing the transmit power.

Power Quality Improvement of an Electric Arc Furnace Using a New Universal Compensating System

  • This paper presents a new compensating system, consisting of series and shunt active filters, for mitigating voltage and current disturbances. The shunt filter is used to compensate for unbalanced and distorted load currents. The series filter comprises two inverters, used to suppress voltage disturbances and handle source currents independently. This configuration is devised to reduce the overall cost of active compensators by using low-frequency high-current switches for the latter inverter. The filters are controlled separately using a novel control strategy. Since voltages at the point of common coupling contain interharmonics, conventional methods cannot be used for extracting voltage references. Therefore, voltage references are obtained from generated sinusoidal waveforms by a phase-locked loop. Current references are detected based on rotating frame vector mapping. Simulation results are presented to verify the system.

  • A microgrid is defined as two or more distributed generation or storage assets configured in a networks and capable of operation in parallel or independently form a larger electric gird, while providing continuous power to one or more end users. And when microgrid are separated from grid oprating protection devices by faults of the grid side, microsources should charge electrical power needs of loads in microgrid and operate maintaining power quality. The magnitude of the switching transients will vary based on voltage phase difference between microgrid and grid, when the microgrid is resynchronized to grid. In this paper, when microgrid is resynchronized to grid, we analyzed the existing problems for reducing switching transients of SS(Static Switch).

  • The study for improvement of power qualify is widely performed, because most equipments used semi-conductor are very sensitive for power quality. In this paper, we performed modeling for STATCOM system which developed using SCRs, and suggested the compensation principle of reactive Power by simulations used PSIM software. We will apply this results to 30kVA STATCOM under manufacturing.

  • In order to improve the quality of electricity in large scale power systems, stability of power system has to be achieved. This can be done by the means of preventative diagnosis of power equipments and protection, monitoring and control of the power system. Since the recent adoption of digital controllers, an improvement in stability was observed; in particular, IED, which contained self-diagnostic abilities such as fault tolerance, allowed for automatic recovery via redundancy or switching-over functions should there be faults with the equipments. Furthermore, communication lines have been hugely simplified, thus adding to the improvement in stability significantly. Taking these error reports and forecasting emergency reports and by effectively responding to them in the overiding controlling systems, high levels of system stability can be obtained. Power Management System that is being applied to automated power sub-stations, takes the IEC61850 international standard as its specification. In this paper, additional research into achieving stability of already developed PMS system and also the stability of the overall system was carried out, and the results of development of communication servers, which play a pivotal role in connecting systems, are stated.

  • Among the main functions of the grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) system, the anti-islanding operation function is a very important problem. Recently, due to the improvement in power generation efficiency and the maintenance advantages in PV system, the use of string inverter has increased so that the possibility of islanding operation has been raised. Generally, when a power system faults, the PV inverter must be disconnected from power system within 10 cycles by the anti-islanding operation function. However, in the real-time of power system, the output power of the PV system within 10cycles is effected. In this paper, we analyzed the effect of grid-connected PV system on power quality in a short time within 10 cycles on fault case of power system using the Matlab Simulink program.
