  • Wearable devices have become widespread. Fitness band is one of common wearable devices, providing useful functions. It helps users to monitor and collect their status such as heart rate and travel distance. Wearable devices, including fitness bands, are designed in small size and it ends up having small battery capacity. In that regard, it is necessary to expand the lifetime of wearable devices. Conventional power management scheme of wearable devices is based on DVFS Ondemand Governor and peripheral control by timeout event, such as turning off the LCD. In this paper, we propose a hybrid governor applying hardware supporting low power mode such as sleep mode to exploit the periodicity of fitness band task. In addition, we show hybrid governor outperforms in power consumption than conventional power management scheme of wearable devices based on Ondemand Governor through experiments.

  • Gas turbine generators in load-following operation in the domestic power system play a major role in maintaining the rated frequency, but often have poor frequency control. Therefore, after examining the control characteristics of the governor, which is a gas turbine speed control device, and analyzing the failure types, countermeasures were suggested for each case. In addition, it was confirmed through the governor response test that the gas turbine helps in frequency recovery depending on the speed of fuel control, but also acts as a factor impeding stable operation, such as rapid fluctuations in combustion chamber temperature and combustion vibration. Therefore, in order to maintain stable power quality, there was a need for thorough facility management as well as research on the governor control method in which the traditional PID control method and the machine learning algorithm, a core field of the 4th industry, were fused.

  • In this paper, Power Management System(PMS) simulator for Liquid Nature Gas Carrier(LNGC) is developed. Major components of power system for LNGC, such as generator, diesel engine and governor, transformer, circuit breaker, and 3 phase loads models are built based on MATLAB/SIMULINK. With these designed major parts, PMS simulator modeling is carried out. Based on MATLAB/Graphical User Interface, PMS simulator control for LNGC, and Human Machine Interface for monitoring is designed. PMS simulator for LNGC carries out simulation according to sequence of characteristics analysis. By comparing results of predicted simulation for each sequence to that of characteristics analysis, the reliability of PMS simulator for LNGC will be verified.

  • In this study, research and a demonstration for applying DC distribution systems to ships as an environmental and energy conservation solution in domestic and foreign countries were actively carried out. In order to apply a generator to a DC distribution system, a variable speed engine was used. Both engine speed and fuel consumption were reduced. In this paper, a DC generator for DC distribution was constructed using a diesel generator, a generator controller, a governor, and an AVR. A system configuration method for a generator, power quality test, and the power characteristics of a variable speed generator were analyzed. The voltage (250 - 440 VAC) and frequency (34 - 60 Hz) of the variable speed generator were set to 60 - 100 % of the rated value, and the engine was set to operate from 1100 - 1800 rpm. It was confirmed that the voltage, current, and frequency of the generator output fluctuated in a stable manner according to the power amount when changing the engine speed of the generator according to the load variation.

  • In this paper, DF(Dual Fuel) Generator modeling, which uses both conventional diesel fuel and LNG fuel, has been performed and monitoring system has been developed based on MATLAB/SIMULINK for the development of PMS(Power Management System) HILS(Hardware In the Loop Simulation). The principal components modeling of DF Generator are DF engine which provides the mechanical power and synchronous generator which convert the mechanical power into electrical power. Submodels, such as throttle body, intake manifold, torque generation and mass of LNG and diesel Quantity are used to perform DF engine. Also, governor is used for load sharing between paralleled DF generators to share a total load that exceeds the capacity of a single generator. To verify modeling of DF Generator designated ship lumped load Simulation is carried out. A validity of DF Generator has been verified by comparison between simulation results and estimated result from the designated lumped load.

  • Android CPU governors exploit the DVFS (Dynamic Voltage Frequency Scaling) technique. The DVFS is a power management technique where the CPU operating frequency is decreased to allow a corresponding reduction in the CPU supply voltage. The power consumed by a CPU is approximately proportional to the square of the CPU supply voltage. Therefore, lower CPU operating frequency allows the CPU supply voltage to be lowered. This helps to reduce the CPU power consumption. However, lower CPU operating frequency increases a task's execution time. Such an increase in the task's execution time makes the task's response time longer and makes the task's deadline miss occur. This finally leads to degrading the quality of service provided by the task. In this paper, we evaluated the performance of Android CPU governors in terms of the power consumption, tasks's response time and deadline miss ratio.

  • Decoding processes in portable media players have a high computational cost, resulting in high power consumption by the CPU. If decoding computations are reduced, the power consumed by the CPU is also be reduced, but such a choice generally results in a degradation of the video quality for the users, so it is essential to address this tradeoff. We proposed a new CPU power management scheme that can make use of the scalability property available in the H.164/SVC standard. We first proposed a new video quality model that makes use of a video quality metric(VQM) in order to efficiently take into account the different quantization factors in the SVC. We then propose a new dynamic voltage scaling(DVS) scheme that can selectively combine the previous decoding times and frame sizes in order to accurately predict the next decoding time. We then implemented a scheme on a commercial smartphone and performed a user test in order to examine how users react to the VQM difference. Real measurements show that the proposed scheme uses up to 34% fewer energy than the Linux DVFS governor, and user tests confirm that the degradation in the quality is quite tolerable.

  • A power management system (PMS) has been an important part in a ship integrated control system. To evaluate a PMS for a liquefied natural gas carrier (LNGC), this research proposes a real-time hardware-in-the-loop simulation (HILS), which is composed of major component models such as turbine generator, diesel generator, governor, circuit breaker, and 3-phase loads on MATLAB/Simulink. In addition, FPGA based control console and main switchboard (MSBD) are constructed in order to develop an efficient control and a similar real environment in an LNGC PMS. A comparative study on the performance evaluation of PMS functions is conducted using two test cases for sharing electric power to consumers in an LNGC. The result shows that the proposed system has a high verification capability for the operating function and failure insertion evaluation as a PMS simulator.

  • Recently, the large scaled energy storage system(ESS) which has various functions such as peak saving, demand management, output stabilization of renewable energy and frequency regulation(FR) is being energetically installed and operated. Especially, as the use case of frequency regulation ESS, the KEPCO has demonstrated the total of 376[MW] ESS since 2014. However, there are no operational experiences and international technical standards on frequency regulation application in ESS. Therefore, this paper propose the evaluation algorithm for power system performance of ESS by considering the frequency characteristics between governor of existing generator and frequency regulation ESS, in order to verify the power system performance of ESS. And also, this paper propose an evaluation modeling for small scaled power system including the existing generator, frequency control ESS and customer loads based on the PSCAD/EMTDC S/W. From the simulation results in 360[MW] model power system, it is confirmed that frequency regulation ESS has better performances than conventional generators.
