  • A novel converter-free AC LED driver that is highly resistant to the fluctuation of AC voltage is proposed in this study. By removing large passive components, such as the bulky capacitor and the large-value inductor, the integration of the driver circuit is enhanced while the driving current remains stable. The proposed circuit provides LED lamps with a driving current that can follow the sinusoid waveform to obtain a very high power factor (PF) and low total harmonic distortion (THD). The LED input current produced by this driving current is insensitive to fluctuations in the AC voltage. Users will thus not feel that LED lamps are flashing during the fluctuation. Experiment results indicate that the proposed system can obtain PF of 0.999 and THD as low as 3.3% for a five-string 6 W LED load under 220 V at 50 Hz.

  • This paper presents a novel soft-switching PWM utility frequency AC to high frequency AC power conversion circuit incorporating boost-half-bridge inverter topology, which is more suitable and acceptable for cost effective consumer induction heating applications. The operating principle and the operation modes are presented using the switching mode and the operating voltage and current waveforms. The performances of this high-frequency inverter using the latest IGBTs are illustrated, which includes high frequency power regulation and actual efficiency characteristics based on zero voltage soft switching (ZVS) operation ranges and the power dissipation as compared with those of the previously developed high-frequency inverter. In addition, a dual mode control scheme of this high frequency inverter based on asymmetrical pulse width modulation (PWM) and pulse density modulation (PDM) control scheme is discussed in this paper in order to extend the soft switching operation ranges and to improve the power conversion efficiency at the low power settings. The power converter practical effectiveness is substantially proved based on experimental results from practical design example.

  • The CMOS four-quadrant analog multiplier for low-voltage low-power applications are presented in this thesis. The circuit approach is based on the characteristic of the LV (Low-Voltage) composite transistor which is one of the useful analog building block. SPICE simulations are carried out to examine the performances of the designed multiplier. Simulation results are obtained by 0.6㎛ CMOS parameters with 2V power supply. The basic configuration of the multiplier is the CMOS Gilbert cell with two LV composite transistors. The linear input range of the multiplier is over ±0.4V with a linearity error of less than 1.3%. The measured -3dB bandwidth is 288MHz and the power dissipation is 255 ㎼.

  • Higher power density, higher operational temperature, lower on state resistance and higher switching frequency capabilities of Silicon Carbide (SiC) technology devices compared to Silicon (Si) devices makes it has higher promising market. One of the most developed SiC devices is the power MOSFET. This study tests the SiC MOSFET under short circuit conditions taking into account the effect of gate voltage characteristics. The results will be compared to IGBT and MOSFET Si devices with similar ratings. A tester circuit was designed to perform the short circuit operation.

  • A novel low-cost simple and unity-power-factor electronic ballast is presented. The proposed electronic ballast employs a bypassing capacitor and load networks composed of ballast capacitors and small charge pump capacitors as power factor correction circuit combined with the secondary winding of the transformer in the self-excited current-fed push-pull resonant inverter(CF-PPRI) resulting in cost-effectiveness and higher efficiency. By analyzing the principles of power factor correction mathematically optimum design guidelines are presented. Since the lamps are used in power factor correction stage the input power is automatically adjusted according to the number of the lamps.

  • Risk importance measures are widely wed to rank risk contributors in risk-based applications. Typically, Fussell-Vesely (F-V) importance and risk achievement worth (RAW) are used in the component importance raking for the reliability centered maintenance (RCM) analysis of safety system in nuclear power plants (NPPs). This study was performed as part of feasibility study on RCM for domestic NPPs, which is focused on the component importance ranking approach the maintenance recommendation. The approach of modulizing faulting tree basic events was applied in the simplification process of the PSA model and the validity of the approach was evaluated As a result of the case study, this paper included the importance and the maintenance recommendations for the safety-related equipments associated with safety injection and containment spray in large loss of coolant accident sequences.

  • This work proposes a simple control method of a buck-type active power decoupling circuit that can minimize the ripple values in the dc link voltage. The proposed method utilizes a simplified duty calculation method and an optimal compensation gain tracking algorithm with variable-step approach. Thus, the dc link voltage ripple can be effectively reduced through the proposed method along with rapid response in tracking the optimum compensation gain. Moreover, the proposed method has better dynamic responses in the load fluctuation or abnormal situation. MATLAB/Simulink simulation and hardware-in-the-loop-simulation(HILS)-based experimental results are presented to validate the effectiveness of the proposed control method.

But this rectifier has occurred some problems which are the input power factor and current harmonics. To solve the above problems, in this paper, two topology is adopted. The one is the boost type PFC for improving the input power factor. The other is the ZVT resonant circuit for reducing the switching loss and stress. In this paper, the proposed topology is analyze designed to built the ZVT PFC for using 3[KW] power amplifier. In order to verify the circuit va finally, the PSPICE simulation and experiment results are presented.

  • This paper offers two Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) systems for Photovoltaic (PV) applications. The first MPPT method is based on a fixed frequency Model Predictive Control (MPC). The second MPPT technique is based on the Predictive Hysteresis Control (PHC). An experimental demonstration shows that the proposed techniques are fast, accurate and robust in tracking the maximum power under different environmental conditions. A DC/DC converter with a high voltage gain is obligatory to track PV applications at the maximum power and to boost a low voltage to a higher voltage level. For this purpose, a high gain Switched Inductor Quadratic Boost Converter (SIQBC) for PV applications is presented in this paper. The proposed converter has a higher gain than the other transformerless topologies in the literature. It is shown that at a high gain the proposed SIQBC has moderate efficiency.

  • In this paper, a buck-boost type battery charger is developed for charging battery set with a lower voltage. This battery charger is configured by a rectifier circuit, an integrated boost/buck power converter and a switched capacitors circuit. A boost power converter and a buck power converter sharing a common power electronic switch are integrated to form the integrated boost/buck power converter. By controlling the common power electronic switch, the battery charger performs a hybrid constant-current/constant-voltage charging method and gets a high input power factor. Accordingly, both the power circuit and the control circuit of the developed battery charger are simplified. The switched capacitors circuit is applied to be the output of the boost converter and the input of the buck converter. The switched capacitors circuit can change its voltage according to the utility voltage so as to reduce the step-up voltage gain of the boost converter when the utility voltage is small. Hence, the power efficiency of a buck-boost type battery charger can be improved. Moreover, the step-down voltage gain of the buck power converter is reduced to increase the controllable range of the duty ratio for the common power electronic switch. A prototype is developed and tested to verify the performance of the proposed battery charger.
