  • Recently, wireless power transfer technology is ready to be commercialized in consumer electronics. It draws attention of not only experts but also public because of its convenience and huge market. However, previous technologies such as magnetic resonance and induction coupling have limited applications because of its short transfer distance compared to device size and magnetic intensity limitation for the safety of body exposure. As an alternative, ultrasonic wireless power transfer technology is proposed. The ultrasonic wireless power transfer system is composed of transmitter which converts electrical energy to ultrasonic energy and receiver which converts the ultrasonic energy to the electrical energy again. This paper is focused on the development of high energy conversion efficiency of ultrasonic transmitter. Optimal transfer frequency is calculated based on the acoustic radiation and damping effect. The transmitter is designed through numerical analysis, and is manufactured to match the optimal transfer frequency with the size of 100mm diameter, 12.2 mm thickness plate. The energy conversion efficiency of about 13.6% at 2m distance is obtained, experimentally. This result is quite high considered with the device size and the power transfer distance.

  • Multiseeding with (100)/(100) grain junctions of top-seeded melt growth (TSMG) processed YBCO superconductors was studied. The effect of the number of seeds and the distance between two seeds on the levitation forces and the trapped magnetic fields of the TSMG-processed YBCO samples was investigated. Multiple seeding shortened the processing time for the fabrication of TSMC-processed YBCO superconductors. The large magnetic field was trapped at the grain junction when two seeds was placed without spacing, while the amount of the magnetic field decreased when the seed distance increased. This is attributed to the increased amount of the residual melt phases around the grain junctions.

  • In this study, we analyze the structure of the transceiver coil in the inductive power transfer (IPT) system. In the IPT system, the transceiver coil design needs to have the highest magnetic coupling possible because of the relatively low magnetic coupling due to the large gap of distance without the core. The transmitting coil may be formed as a multi-layer type according to the distance between the transmitting and receiving coils if the receiving coil is configured as a multi-layer type on the inner structure of the receiving apparatus, thereby improving the magnetic coupling and system efficiency. We compare and analyze the coil magnetic coupling, and system efficiency according to the layer structure of the transmitting and receiving coils and verify the analysis by JMAG simulation. Experimental results show that the layer structure of the transceiver should be considered according to the inner space of the receiving device and the spacing distance.

  • Generally in the case of mobil communication service for long distance sea, unlike heavily populated residential areas, providers need to minimize the service area per base station. Therefore, in this thesis, the 800 ㎒ CDMA system should be extended to give better long distance communication service. This model is used to predict the occurring receiving power of the mobile stations that we simulated and analyzed. As a result, the experiment demonstrated the appropriateness of predicting receiving power using this model.

  • We consider transmit antenna selection combined with power allocation for quadrature spatial modulation (QSM) systems to improve the error rate performance. The Euclidean distance-based joint optimization criterion is presented for transmit antenna selection and power allocation in QSM. It requires an exhaustive search and thus high computational complexity. Thus its reduced-complexity algorithm is proposed with a strategy of decoupling, which is employed to successively find transmit antennas and power allocation factors. First, transmit antennas are selected without considering power allocation. After selecting transmit antennas, power allocation factors are determined. Simulation results demonstrate considerable performance gains with lower complexity for transmit antenna selected QSM systems with power allocation, which can be achieved with limited rate feedback.

  • The power supply system in Korean electrified railway has adopted AT feeding. If a fault occurs in some substation for any reason, the vicinity substation must feed electric power on the outage substation through catenary. So, the feeding distance grows twice of the normal state at extended feeding condition. If substation's feeding distance is longer than normal condition, the catenary impedance and train to supply electric power from the substation. Therefore, the severe voltage drop can occur and power supply shall be not allowed. This paper presents the model of compensator against voltage drop using multi-port network algorithm. Whole traction power supply system can be analyzed with this model. Computer simulation including this model is performed based on real train schedule and increased schedule in case studies.

  • Offshore wind farms extend a distance from an onshore grid to increase their generating power, but long distance and high power transmissions raise a lot of cost challenges. LFAC (Low Frequency AC) transmission is a new promising technology in high power and low cost power transmission fields against HVDC (High Voltage DC) and HVAC (High Voltage AC) transmissions. This paper presents an economic comparison of LFAC and HVDC transmissions for large offshore wind farms. The economic assessments of two different transmission technologies are analyzed and compared in terms of wind farm capacities (600 MW and 900 MW) and distances (from 25 km to 100 km) from the onshore grid. Based on this comparison, the economic feasibility of LFAC is verified as a most economical solution for remote offshore wind farms.

  • Early this year the construction of new high voltage power lines have been forced to stop due to the demonstration of residents in Kwa-chun. According to mutual agreement between the residents and Korea Electric Power Corporation, electromagnetic field(EMF) from present power lines was measured and EMF after completion of new power lines was estimated. The results show that EMF near power lines Is relatively low, and EMFnear electric substation is quite high due to the short distance between the power lines and ground. For 4 conduction 345kV line, magnetic field decreases to 3mG at the distance of 50m from the power line.

  • This paper describes a distance measurement system with high accuracy that utilizes a stereo-based camera and a pan-tilt unit for automatically maintaining the positional relationship between a vessel and a target on the side of a facility at a close range. The measurement system offers an advantage in that it can measure the distance to a target while tracking it. In order to improve the ability to control the position of a vessel between it and a target while maintaining the distance especially at a close range, the accuracy of the measurement system has to be improved. The accuracy of the distance measured by our system is increased with revisions of the conclusively generated data of distance measurement. We verified the accuracy of our system from an experiment, which generated results that had an accuracy of 30 mm for distances in the range between 2-8 m.

  • In this paper, we propose a distance measurement system for automatic berthing control using a stereo camera mounted on a rotation control device, and a radial pattern target. Automatically controlling the position and attitude of a ship aims to prevent maritime accidents due to human error. Our goal is to measure the relative distance between a ship and an onshore or offshore target for berthing. Therefore, the distance should be continuously measured while tracking a fixed point on a target. To this end, we developed a stereo camerabased distance measurement system that satisfied these requirements. This paper describes the structure and principle of the measurement system. We validate the distance error for target incline due to the relative position and attitude between a camera and a target in miniature scale. In addition, the findings of an experiment in an outdoor environment demonstrate that the proposed measurement system has accuracy within 1 m at a range of 20-100 m which is the acceptable accuracy for automatic berthing.
