Regional Contrast Enhancement for Local Dimming Backlight on Small-sized Mobile Display

  • This paper presents smart regional contrast enhancement technique of partitioned image for local dimming backlight on small-sized mobile display to reach two goals. One is to save the power consumption, and the other to improve contrast ratio of display image. Recently new advanced method is proposed, named local dimming method, that backlight LED is positioned on backside of the display panel. So it is important to partition an image by sub blocks and then post-processing independantly. This means regional contrast enhancement. After partitioning, we compare the mean luminance(Y) value of each sub-block image with the one of original whole image. If some blocks have the mean value lower than the one of whole image, they are processed with the proposed method and others are bypassed. Simultaneously the information of the processed blocks are transferred to BLC(Backlight LED Controller). And then the supply current of each backlight LED is reduced to realize the contrast ratio enhancement and at the same time to power consumption reduction. In addition, we verify this proposed method is free from blocking artifacts.

  • Electric motor transforms electric power into mechanical power. It is important to increase efficiency of motor to save energy and to decrease operating cost. In this paper, some parameters and losses of high-efficiency induction motor and standard induction motor are measured by blocked-rotor test and no-load test. Operational parameters of high-efficiency induction motor that are compared with those of standard motor.

  • IEEE 802.15.4 low-rate Wireless Personal Area Networks (WPAN) are expected to provide ubiquitous networking between small personal/home devices and sensors with low power consumption and low cost features. The technology employs special CSMA/CA (Carrier Sense Multiple Access/collision Avoidance) to save power consumption for small or portable WPAN-enabled devices. In this paper, we simulation the slotted CSMA/CA of IEEE 802.15.4 MAC and evaluate its performance limit in order to grasp the characteristics of Medium Access Control (MAC) of IEEE 802.15.4 WPAN.

  • A water management system is developed to reduce the unit cost of production in wide-area waterworks. Improving productivity in waterworks is to save power rate. We suggest a method to schedule the supply of water according to the time-varying power rate and pump control scheme. Water pipeline analysis package (SynerGEE Water) is utilized to obtain optimal pump control solution adaptation to water demand. Our evaluation results show that developed scheme is more efficient than the conventional.

  • In this paper, an intelligent control scheme with multi-stage fuzzy inference is developed for a myoelectric prosthesis to achieve natural control with tactile feedback based on fuzzy control strategies. Strain gauges and a potentiometer are added to the prosthesis for tactile feedback with a PWM motor driver developed to save the battery power. According to the multi-stage fuzzy inference, the prosthesis can determine the stiffness of the object and hold an object without injuring it, meanwhile, the hysteresis phenomenon is an 80196KC single-chip microcontroller to replace the original controller.

Energy-Efficient Antenna Selection in Green MIMO Relaying Communication Systems

  • In existing literature on multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) relaying communication systems, antenna selection is often implemented by maximizing the channel capacity or the output single-to-noise ratio (SNR). In this paper, we propose an energy-efficient low-complexity antenna selection scheme for MIMO relaying communication systems. The proposed algorithm is based on beamforming and maximizing the Frobenius norm to jointly optimize the transmit power, number of active antennas, and antenna subsets at the source, relaying and destination. We maximize the energy efficiency between the link of source to relay and the link of relay to destination to obtain the maximum energy efficiency of the system, subject to the SNR constraint. Compared to existing antenna selection methods forMIMO relaying communication systems, simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method can save more power in term of energy efficiency, while having lower computational complexity.

유압펌프시스템의 직접 순시 토오크 제어 (Direct Instantaneous Torque Control of Hydraulic Oil Pump System)

  • In hydraulic oil pump system, pressure has a linear relationship with output torque of motor. Torque control of pump drive can easily output stable pressure, and it can retain required pressure at minimum speed to save power consumption. Switched reluctance motor(SRM) has many advantages such as low cost and low inertia. It can generate high torque at low speed. But inherent high torque ripple of SRM influences performance of pressure control in hydraulic oil system. This paper presents direct instantaneous torque control(DITC) of hydraulic oil pump system. DITC method can reduce inherent torque ripple of SRM, and output smoothing torque to load. So the proposed hydraulic oil pump system can support smooth pressure and fast dynamic power supply to the hydraulic pump system. At last the proposed hydraulic oil pump system is verified by computer simulation and experimental results.

  • 최근의 멀티미디어 시스템 설계 (예: 휴대폰, PDA) 경향에서 전력 소모를 줄이는 연구가 매우 긴요한 상황에, 본 연구는 누설 전류(leakage power)를 줄이는 연산 회로 아키텍쳐 합성 기법을 제안한다. 누설 전류를 줄이기 위한 방법으로 본 연구는 Dual threshold Voltage (Dual-V$_{T}$) 기법을 적용한다. 기존의 연구에서는 회로 설계 단계 중 논리나 트랜지스터 수준에서DUal-V$_{T}$를 적용한 방법과는 달리, 보다 상위 단계인 회로의 아키텍쳐 합성 단계에서의 지연시간 제약 조건을 만족하는 범위에서 최소의 누설전류 소모를 위한 합성 기법을 제안한다 따라서, 지연 시간과 누설전류 간의 Trade-Off를 이용하여 설계 조건에 맞는 융통성 있는 설계 결과를 얻을 수 있는 장점을 제공한다. 본 연구는 케리-세이브 가산기 (Carry-Save Adder) 모듈의 생성 과정에 국한된 합성 알고리즘의 적용을 보이고 있지만, 일반적인 연산 모듈을 사용한 아키텍쳐 설계 과정에서도 본 알고리즘을 쉽게 변형, 적용할 수 있다.

A Study on a High Efficiency Dryer for Food Waste

  • The food waste that occurs in one year is very high in our country and disposal is expensive. However, disposers for food waste are not used wisely at real life. This is because most of them some kind of problem, for example big volume, complicated construction, high cost, lots of troubles, low energy efficiency and so on. In this study, we propose the new dryer system to decrease drying times by injecting hot air in down the side of the drying bucket. The designed drying bucket has inclined inlet holes down both sides. The inlet holes have variable gradients, we adjust the inlet velocity of the hot air to find a suitable vortex in the drying bucket. We verify the properties of the proposed system though simulation. The results show the proposed dryer system can improve the drying time and save energy for food waste disposal.
