  • Recently, energy harvesting technology is considered as a tool to improve the lifetime of sensor networks by mitigating the battery capacity limitation problem. However, the previous work on energy harvesting has failed to provide practical information since it has assumed an ideal channel knowledge model with perfect channel state information at transmitter (CSIT). This paper proposes an energy efficient resource allocation scheme that takes account of the channel estimation process and the corresponding estimation error. Based on the optimization tools, we provide information on efficient scheduling and power allocation as the functions of channel estimation accuracy, harvested energy, and data rate. The simulation results confirm that the proposed scheme outperforms the conventional energy harvesting networks without considering channel estimation error in terms of energy efficiency. Furthermore, with taking account of channel estimation error, the results provides a new way for allocating resources and scheduling devices.

  • In this two-part paper, we consider dynamic resource allocation in orthogonal frequency division multiple access(OFDMA). To reduce the reverse link overhead for channel quality information(CQI) feedback, a set of sub-carriers are tied up to a sub-channel to be used as the unit of CQI feedback, user-multiplexing and the corresponding power/rate allocation. Specifically, we focus on two sub-channel structures, either aggregated or distributed, where the SNR distribution over a sub-channel is modeled as Ricean in general, and the channel quality of a sub-channel is summarized as the mean and variance of channel gain envelop divided by noise standard deviation. Then, we develop a generalized two step channel/resource allocation algorithm, which uses the two statistical measurements, and analyze the spectral efficiency of the OFDMA system in terms of average frequency utilization. An extension to proportional fair algorithm will also be addressed. As confirmed by numerical results, the aggregated structure is preferred especially when intending aggressive link adaptation.

  • Hybrid radio frequency/free space optical (RF/FSO) wireless mesh networks have attracted increasing attention for they can overcome the limitations of RF and FSO communications and significantly increase the throughput of wireless mesh networks (WMNs). In this article, a resource assignment optimization scheme is proposed for hybrid RF/FSO wireless mesh networks. The optimization framework is proposed for the objective of maximizing throughput of overall hybrid networks through joint transmission slot assignment, FSO links allocation and power control with the consideration of the fading nature of RF and FSO links. The scheme is formulated as an instance of mixed integer linear program (MILP) and the optimal solutions are provided using CPLEX and Gurobi optimizers. How to choose the appropriate optimizer is discussed by comparing their performance. Numerous simulations are done to demonstrate that the performance of our optimization scheme is much better than the current case of having the same topology.

  • This paper considers a cooperative orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA)-based cognitive radio network where the primary system leases some of its subchannels to the secondary system for a fraction of time in exchange for the secondary users (SUs) assisting the transmission of primary users (PUs) as relays. Our aim is to determine the cooperation strategies among the primary and secondary systems so as to maximize the sum-rate of SUs while maintaining quality-of-service (QoS) requirements of PUs. We formulate a joint optimization problem of PU transmission mode selection, SU (or relay) selection, subcarrier assignment, power control, and time allocation. By applying dual method, this mixed integer programming problem is decomposed into parallel per-subcarrier subproblems, with each determining the cooperation strategy between one PU and one SU. We show that, on each leased subcarrier, the optimal strategy is to let a SU exclusively act as a relay or transmit for itself. This result is fundamentally different from the conventional spectrum leasing in single-channel systems where a SU must transmit a fraction of time for itself if it helps the PU's transmission. We then propose a subgradient-based algorithm to find the asymptotically optimal solution to the primal problem in polynomial time. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can significantly enhance the network performance.

  • Network convergence is regarded as the development tendency of the future wireless networks, for which self-organization paradigms provide a promising solution to alleviate the upgrading capital expenditures (CAPEX) and operating expenditures (OPEX). Self-optimization, as a critical functionality of self-organization, employs a decentralized paradigm to dynamically adapt the varying environmental circumstances while without relying on centralized control or human intervention. In this paper, we present comprehensive surveys of heterogeneous networks (HetNets) and investigate the enhanced self-optimization models. Self-optimization approaches such as dynamic mobile access network selection, spectrum resource allocation and power control for HetNets, etc., are surveyed and compared, with possible methodologies to achieve self-optimization summarized. We hope this survey paper can provide the insight and the roadmap for future research efforts in the self-optimization of convergence networks.

  • Reducing the interference to the licensed mobile users and obtaining the energy efficiency are key issues in cognitive heterogeneous networks. A corresponding rate loss constraint is proposed to be used for the sensing-based spectrum sharing (SBSS) model in cognitive heterogeneous networks in this paper. Resource allocation optimization strategy is designed for the maximum energy efficiency under the proposed interference constraint together with average transmission power constraint. An efficiency algorithm is studied to maximize energy efficiency due to the nonconvex optimal problem. Furthermore, the relationship between the proposed protection criterion and the conventional interference constraint strategy under imperfect sensing condition for the SBSS model is also investigated, and we found that the conventional interference threshold can be regarded as the upper bound of the maximum rate loss that the primary user could tolerate. Simulation results have shown the effectiveness of the proposed protection criterion overcome the conventional interference power constraint.

  • This paper presents a resource management mechanism for the mesh networking in IEEE 802.15.3 High-rate WPAN. IEEE 802.15 TGS is standardizing the MAC and PHY for mese networking. This task group researches the mechanism that are extension of network coverage without increasing transmit power of receive sensitivity, and studies the enhanced reliability via route redundancy. In this paper we propose the distributed resource management scheme that is fairly using the channel resource in the piconet without centralized piconet coordinator. Each DEV reserves the channel time and broadcasts its information. This scheme has unfairness for later associated DEV because of preoccupation of earlier associated DEVs. This paper presents the method that fairly allocates the channel time in MAC layer. And we evaluate the performance enhancement using simple simulations.

  • In Femtocell that provides high quality of indoor communications with low transmitted power, there are two typical Access modes; Closed Access mode and Open Access mode. In this paper, we propose resource allocation scheme, which mitigates difference of performance between Access modes and improves overall cell performance, according to Access mode. We give more wireless resources to Open Access mode Femtocell, which improves performance of other users, than Closed Access mode Femtocell. If Open Access mode Femtocell uses more resource, there is trade-off between improvement of user using Open Access mode Femtocell and increase of interference that other users receive. So, we solve the optimal value for resource allocation and analyze performance of conventional scheme and proposed scheme applying the optimal value. Eventually, proposed scheme can improve overall cell performance relative to conventional scheme.

  • Data centers, which implement cloud service, have been faced up with quick growth of energy consumption and low efficiency of energy. 60GHz wireless communication technology, as a new option to data centers, can provide feasible approach to alleviate the problems. Aiming at energy optimization in 60GHz wireless data centers (WDCs), we investigate virtualization technology to assign virtual resources to minimum number of servers, and turn off other servers or adjust them to the state of low power. By comprehensive analysis of wireless data centers, we model virtual network and physical network in WDCs firstly, and propose Virtual Resource Mapping Packing Algorithm (VRMPA) to solve energy management problems. According to VRMPA, we adopt packing algorithm and sort physical resource only once, which improves efficiency of virtual resource allocation. Simulation results show that, under the condition of guaranteeing network load, VPMPA algorithm can achieve better virtual request acceptance rate and higher utilization rate of energy consumption.
