Worldwide, there is a significant surge in the efforts for addressing the issue of global warming; the use of renewable energy is one of the solutions proposed to mitigate global warming. However, severe volatility is a critical disadvantage, and thus, power-to-gas technology is considered one of best solutions for energy storage. Hydrogen is a popular candidate from the perspective of both environment and economics. Accordingly, a hydrogen production system based on renewable energy sources is developed, and the economics of the system are assessed. The result of the base case shows that the unit cost of hydrogen production would be 6,415 won/kg H2, with a hydrogen production plant based on a 100 MW akaline electrolyzer and 25% operation rate, considering renewable energy sources with no electricity cost payment. Sensitivity study results show that the range of hydrogen unit cost efficiency can be 2,293 to 6,984 Won/kg H2, depending on the efficiency and unit cost of the electrolyzer. In case of electrolyzer operation rate and electricity unit cost, sensitivity study results show that hydrogen unit cost is in the range 934-26,180 won/kg H2.

Failure of a pipeline due to local wall thinning is getting more attention in the nuclear power plant industry. Although guidelines such as ANSI/ASME B31G and ASME Code Case N597 are still useful fer assessing the integrity of a wall thinned pipeline, there are some limitations in these guidelines. For instance, these guidelines consider only pressure loading and thus neglect bending loading. However, most Pipelines in nuclear power plants are subjected to internal pressure and bending moment due to dead-weight loads and seismic loads. Therefore, an assessment procedure for locally wall thinned pipeline subjected to combined loading is needed. In this paper, three-dimensional finite element(FE) analyses were performed to simulate full-scale pipe tests conducted for various shapes of wall thinned area under internal pressure and bending moment. Maximum moments based on true ultimate stress(${\alpha}$$\sub$u,t/) were obtained from FE results to predict the failure of the pipe. These results were compared with test results, which showed good agreement. Additional finite element analyses were performed to investigate the effect of key parameters, such as wall thinned depth, wall thinned angle and wall thinned length, on maximum moment. Also, the effect of internal pressure on maximum moment was investigated. Change of internal pressure did not show significant effect on the maximum moment.

This study was objected to evaluate the potential impact on the groundwater environment of the coal bottom ash used as fill materials on the land surface. From four coal-fired power plants, bottom-ashes were collected and analyzed through sequential extraction and column leaching tests following the meteoric water mobility procedure. The column tests shown leaching heavy metals including Pb, As, B, Cu, Zn, Mn, Ni, Ba, Sr, Sb, V, Cr, Mo, and Hg. The relatively high concentrations of B, Sr, Ba, and V in leachate were attributed to both the higher concentrations in the bottom ash and the relatively higher portion of leachable state, sorbed state, of metals. Bottom-ash samples from the D-plant only show high leaching potential of sulfate ($SO_4$), probably originated from the coal-combustion process, called the Fluidized Bed Combustion. Consequently, to manage recycling bottom ashes as fill materials, an evaluation system should be implemented to test the leaching potentials of metals from the ashes considering the absolute amount of metals and their state of existence in ashes, and the coal-combustion process.

This study was carried out not only to evaluate optimal operating condition to increase biogas production, but also to estimate feasibility of renewable energy from anaerobic digester of sewage sludge. Semi- continuous Fed and Mixed Reactors (SCFMRs) were operated in various condition to quantify the reactor variables. The result of SCFMR operation showed that the biogas productivity and total volatile solids (TVS) removal of total solids (TS) 4% reactor at hydraulic retention time (HRT) 20 days with Organic Loading Rate (OLR) of $1.45kg/m^3-d$ were $0.39m^3/m^3-d$ and 26.7%, respectively which was two times higher than that of TS 2.5% reactor. Consequently the daily biogas production of $20,000m^3$ would be possible from the total volume of $52,000m^3$ of anaerobic digesters of the municipal wastewater treatment plant in D city. In feasibility study for the Biogas utilization, combined heat and power system (CHP) and CNG gasification were examined. In case of CHP, the withdrawal period of capital cost for gas-engine (GE) and micro gas-turbine (MGT) were 7.7 years and 9.1 years respectively. biogas utilization as Clean Natural Gas (CNG) shows lower capital cost and higher profit than that of CHP system. CNG gasificaion after biogas purification is likely the best alternative for Biogas utilization which have more economic potential than CHP system. The withdrawal period of capital cost appeared to be 2.3 years.
The strategies of maintenance and operation are usually established based on the number of flaws and their size distribution obtained from nondestructive inspection in order to preserve safety of the plant. But non destructive inspection results are different from the physical flaws which really exist in the equipments. In case of a single inspection, it is easy to estimate the number of physical flaws using the POD curve. However, we may be faced with some difficulties in obtaining the number of physical flaws from the periodic in-service non destructive inspection data. In this study a simple method for estimating the number of physical flaws from periodic in-service nondestructive inspection data was proposed. In order to obtain the flaw growth history, the flaw growth was simulated using the Monte Carlo method and the flaw size and the corresponding POD value were obtained for each flaw at each periodic inspection time. The flaw growth rate used in the simulation was statistically calculated from the in-service inspection data. By repeating the simulation numerous flaw growth data could be generated and the effective POD curve was obtained as a function of flaw size. From the effective POD curve the number of physical flaws was obtained. The usefulness and convenience of the proposed method was evaluated from several applications and satisfactory results were obtained.

Three dimensional numerical analysis for the coal fired boiler has been performed to investigate the effect of yaw angle variation of the secondary air nozzles on the combustion characteristics and NOx emission. It was found that the prediction gives a good agreement with plant data. The increase in yaw angle up to $20^{\circ}$ have results in the decrease in NOx emission at furnace exit and recirculation flow intensity, together with the increase of unburned carbon in ash. It also has been recognized the remarkably change in configuration of fire ball with increase in yaw angle. The results from this study would be valuable in the case of the combustion modification of the corner firing coal-fired utility boiler.

The aim of this study is to research applicable possibility or Dry Sorbent Injection Technique(DSI) in sox removal process using Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) software package. It will be applied for 500MW in capacity coal-fired thermal power plant operated by South Korea N. Power Co., Ltd. The DSI process is adapted between a preheater and an EP process in the technological assembly. The numerical analysis performs in predicting and optimizing of DSI process's characteristics, which consists of structure of duct, position of injection nozzles, injection speed, and dispersion of sorbent. Computing results are shown that degree of sorbent dispersion depends on structure of duct and position of injection nozzles strongly. The highest dispersion efficiency was obtained when we set a Lobed-plate inside the duct and 6 injection nozzles on the duct(4 injection nozzles at the corners and 2 injection nozzles on upper and under walls as a rectangle duct shape). We also know that change of injection speed of sorbent doesn't have an large effect on the sorbent dispersion but it can effect to drop pressure.

HANARO is an open-tank-in-pool-type Korean research reactor that generates 30MW of thermal power. It differs from power plant reactor in that the heat generated by HANARO is exhausted into the atmosphere through a secondary cooling tower, thus maintaining the core temperature constant. During every monthly inspection of the cooling tower, large vibrations that exceeded the permissible limit were observed at cooling fan gear reducer No. 4 of the cooling tower. The purpose of this study is to identify the origin of the large vibration and to repair it. FFT spectrum analysis is performed to identify the part that caused the large vibration. The results of the frequency analysis showed that the vibration frequency was 354 Hz, which is twice the natural frequency of the pinion gear. A check of the pinion gear revealed that there was a crack on the surface of the pinion gear. After the gear was replaced, the reducer operated normally.
This paper proposes a loose part monitoring system (LPMS) design with a signal processing method based on fuzzy logic. Considering fuzzy characteristics of metallic impact waveform due to not only interferences from various types of noises in an operating nuclear power plant but also complex wave propagation paths within a monitored mechanical structure, the proposed LPMS design incorporates the comprehensive relation among impact signal features in the fuzzy rule bases for the purposes of alarm discrimination and impact diagnosis improvement. The impact signal features for the fuzzy rule bases include the rising time, the falling time, and the peak voltage values of the impact signal envelopes. Fuzzy inference results based on the fuzzy membership values of these impact signal features determine the confidence level data for each signal feature. The total integrated confidence level data is used for alarm discrimination and impact diagnosis purposes. Through the perpormance test of the proposed LPMS with mock-up structures and instrumentation facility, test results show that the system is effective in diagnosis of the loose part impact event(i.e., the evaluation of possible impacted area and degree of impact magnitude) as well as in suppressing false alarm generation.
