  • There are fifteen solar radiation measurement stations over the entire country in Korea. However, they are not capable of supplying reliable solar radiation data for remote areas including islands. The un-manned automated insolation measurement station is suitable for these areas due to the electric power shortage and the maintenance problems at these isolated areas. Our main aim in this work is to develop a solar radiation measurement system which collects and stores data by itself utilizing a PV module and a battery as power source for entire system irregardless of the environmental condition. A developed KIER's prototype system along with an independent HWS reference system has been installed at the designated remote island, Dok-do. Global solar radiation has been measured every hour for a 6-month period of time by both systems at this site. A comparison between the measured solar radiation data by each system indicates that there is an excellent agreement showing average 3.0% of an absolute error. It has been observed that the 8-month average global solar radiation was $2,330W/m^2$ day at this island. We came to the conservative conclusion that the developed KIER system is applicable for measuring solar radiation and for supplying reliable fundamental design data for solar energy utilization system at the remote areas.

  • The operational characteristics of a resonant DC/DC converter, which can harvest thermoelectric energy, is analyzed, depending on the relative magnitudes of the input voltage and the load voltage. The resonant converter consists of LC resonant circuit connected to DC input source and a resonant pulse converter in which the input energy is transferred to the load as the resonant capacitor voltage is peak. The resonant capacitor doubles the input voltage by the resonance phenomenon. By the relative magnitude between the input voltage and the output voltage, the resonant DC/DC converter operates in three different modes. For boost mode, the peak voltage of the resonant capacitor is smaller than the load voltage. For hybrid mode, the peak voltage of the resonant capacitor is bigger than the load voltage and every switching period has both the boost mode and the direct mode. For the direct mode, the input voltage is bigger than the load voltage and the converter transfers directly the input energy to the load without the switching operation. Operation principles and the feasibility of the converter for the thermoelectric energy harvesting are verified with PSPICE simulation and experiment.

  • This paper reports a Ringer's solution detector and transceiver design for the efficient management of patients. The ringer's solution detection and transceiver consisted of the main control part, ringer's solution detection part, display and warning light part, wireless transceiver, and power supply part. The light receiving part of the ringer's solution detection part employed TSL260R-LF photodiode; light permeating part, Water-Clear type LED; and wireless transceiver part, the RF wireless data transceiver module, NR-FPCX. As a result of this Ringer's solution detector and transceiver design that can manage the patient efficiently, it was found that when the ringer's solution was detected by the double photodiode, the operating frequency was 11.95kHz; when it was not detected, the number was 9.6kHz. In the ringer's solution receiver, when the ringer's solution was detected, the number was 0. The corresponding unique RF code was displayed when not detected. The power used in the ringer's solution detection part was converted to the Sleep mode to operate under battery save mode. The ringer's solution transceiver can exchange wireless communication approximately within a 700m radius.

  • In the era of the Internet of Things, where all physical objects are connected to the Internet, we suggest a remote control system using a Raspberry Pi single-board computer with ZigBee, which can turn an indoor light-emitting diode (LED) and a multiple-tap on and off, and with a smart phone can control the brightness of the LED as well as an electronic door lock. By connecting an infrared (IR) transmitter module to the Raspberry Pi, we can control home appliances, such as an air conditioner, and we can also monitor indoor images, indoor temperatures, and illumination by using a smart phone app. We developed a method of finding out IR transmission codes required for remote-controllable appliances with an AVR micro-controller. We suggest a method to remotely open and shut an office door by novating the door lock. The brightness level of an LED (between 0 and 10) can be controlled through a PWM signal generated by an ATmega88 microcontroller. A mutiple-tap is controlled using an ATmega32, a photo-coupler, and a TRIAC. The signals for measured temperature and illumination are converted from analog to digital by using the ATtiny44A microcontroller transmitting to a Raspberry Pi through SPI communication. Then, we connect a camera to the CSI head of the Raspberry Pi. We can turn on the smart multiple-tap for a certain period of time, or we can schedule the multi-tap to turn on at a specific time. To reduce standby power, people usually pull out a power code from multiple-taps or turn off a switch. Our method helps people do the same thing with a smart phone, if they are away from home.

  • Recently, 3D printing technology has been applied to make a concept model and working mockup of an industrial application. On the other hand, this technology has limited applications in industrial products due to the materials and reliability of the 3D printed product. In this study, the components of a full cord switch module are proposed as a case of a 3D printed component that can be used as a substitute for a short period. These are hub-driven and lever lockup components that have the structural characteristics of breaking down frequently in the emergency operating status. To ensure the structural strength for a substitute period, research of structure optimization was performed because 3D printing technology has a limitation in the materials used. After optimizing the structure variables of the hub-driven component, reasonable results can be drawn in that the safety factors of the left and right switching mode are 1.243 (${\Delta}153.67%$) and 3.156 (${\Delta}404.96%$). The lever lockup component has a structural weak point that can break down easily on the lockup-part because of a cantilever shape and bending moment. The rib structure was applied to decrease the deflection. In addition, optimization of the structural variables was performed, showing a safety factor of 7.52(${\Delta}26%$).

  • Silicon solar cells have been widely used as a most promising renewable energy source due to eco-friendliness and high efficiency. As modules of silicon solar cells are connected in series for a practical electricity generation, a large voltage of 500-1,500 V is applied to the modules inevitably. Potential-induced degradation (PID), a deterioration of the efficiency and maximum power output by the continuously applied high voltage between the module frames and solar cells, has been regarded as the major cause that reduces the lifetime of silicon solar cells. In particular, the migration of the $Na^+$ ions from the front glass into Si through the anti-reflection coating and the accumulation of $Na^+$ ions at stacking faults inside Si have been reported as the reason of PID. In this research, the thickness effect of $SiO_x$ layer that can block the migration of $Na^+$ ions on the reduction of PID is investigated as it is incorporated between anti-reflection coating and p-n junction in p-type PERC solar cells. From the measurement of shunt resistance, efficiency, and maximum power output after the continuous application of 1,000 V for 96 hours, it is revealed that the thickness of $SiO_x$ layer should be larger than 7-8 nm to reduce PID effectively.

  • A steady state performance simulation and diagnostics program for the turboprop engine (PT6A-62), which is the power plant of the first developed military basic trainer KT-1 in Republic of Korea, was developed. The developed steady state performance analysis program was evaluated with the performance data provided by the engine manufacturer and with analysis results of GASTURB program, which is well known for the performance simulation of gas turbines. Performance parameters were discussed to evaluate validity of the developed program at various cases such as altitude, flight velocity and part load variation. GPA(Gas Pass Analysis) allows engine performance deterioration to be identified at the module level in terms of reduction in component efficiencies and changes in mass flow. In order to find optimal instrument set to detect the physical faults such as fouling, erosion and corrosion, a gas path analysis approach is utilized. This study was performed in two cases for selection of optimal measurement parameters. One case was considered with the effect of instrument number by changing independent parameter number. The other case was performed with selection of independent parameter set. According to the analysis results, the optimal measurement parameters selected were eight dependent variables such as shaft horsepower, fuel flow rate, compressor exit pressure and temperature, compressor turbine inlet pressure and temperature and power turbine inlet pressure and temperature.

  • Internet of thing becomes more active, many sensor devices are increasing. Sensors can use network wired network or use mobile communication network. From the viewpoint of the transmission rate, the mobile communication network can be roughly divided into two types of high-speed communication and low-speed communication. In the case of hundreds of millions of sensors in the mobile communication network, resources are wasted to use high-speed communication. Communication is required to reduce the transmission rate and appropriately allocate resources without wasting such resources. As the Internet of Thing has been activated, Narrowband Internet of Thing(NB-IoT), which is one of the low-power technologies in recent mobile communications, is in the spotlight from various companies. Currently, it can be seen that only NB-IoT or other low power consumption communication has the potential to be able to connect to the Internet with rapidly increasing sensor devices. In this paper, we designed and implemented a heater controller using Huawei NB-IoT communication Module, a server that collects controller information, and an application that allows default settings for devices. The main function of this system is to collect temperature and heater status and give it to the server, control the heater from the server, and set parameters for the heater to operate automatically. The system can be applied to places where wired communication is not established, such as road information, smart agriculture, and small reservoirs as well as heaters.

  • Researches on military weapons are actively studied to improve national defense power of each country. The military weapon system is being used not only as a weapon but also as a reconnaissance and surveillance device for places where it is difficult for people to access. If such a weapon system becomes an object of attack, military data that is important to national security can be leaked. Furthermore, if a device is taken, it can be used as a terrorist tool to threaten its own country. So, security of military devices is necessarily required. In order to enhance the security of a weapon system such as drone, it is necessary to form a chain of trust(CoT) that gives trustworthiness to the overall process of the system from the power on until application is executed. In this paper, by analyzing the trusted computing-based boot technology, we derive trusted boot technology components and classify them based on hardware dependence/independence. We expect our classification of hardware dependence/independence to be applied to the trusted boot technology of our self-development ultraprecision weapon system to improve the defense capability in our military.

  • This paper introduces a simulation method for the collision between roadblocks and vehicles using LS-DYNA. The need to evaluate the performance of anti-ram barriers to prepare for vehicle impact has increased since vehicle impact threats have been included as a design criterion for nuclear power plants. Anti-ram barriers are typically certified for their performance through collision experiments. However, because Koreas has no performance testing facilities for anti-ram barriers, their performance can only be verified through simulations. LS-DYNA is a specialized program for collision simulation. Various organizations, including NCAC, distributes numerical models that have been validated for their accuracy with collision tests. In this study, we constructed a finite element model of the most critical vehicle barrier module and simulated collision between roadblocks and vehicles. The calculated results were verified by applying the validation criteria for vehicle safety facility collision simulations of NCHRP 179.
