  • An experimental study of model truss-type vertical gate consisting of a truss and a plate was presented in this paper to examine the structural dynamics of the gates. A 1:61 scale model was constructed for the 95 m prototype gate using an acrylic truss and an acrylonitrile butadiene styrene plate. The scaled model was tested in a 1.6 m wide concrete flume for two orientations to determine the effects of gate orientation on structural vibrations. Natural frequencies of the model gate was measured and calibrated with FEM predictions. Vertical vibrations were measured under various operational conditions, including a range of bottom opening heights and different upstream and downstream water levels. The gate model with reverse direction was preferred due to its low overall vibrational response and flow level combinations. The test results also provide a basic dataset for development of operations guidelines that minimize flow-induced vibrations of the gates.

  • In this paper, the effects of lateral displacement on the thrust, lift force and (guide force) are investigated by 3-D Finite Element Analysis (FEA) in controlled-PM LSM which has some strong points that electrical power can be minimized and the thrust and lift force can be simultaneously obtained. The variations of airgap flux density and the forces concerning lateral displacement have been analyzed and the effect of lateral displacement and airgap length on the motor performance have been investigated in detail by analysis and experiment results. As the result of this study, the characteristics of PM-LSM concerning with the change of lateral placement and airgap have been made clear quantitatively.

  • With the increasing the importance of emotional quality of vehicle, the sound quality of systems with electric motor components has become increasingly important. Electric motors are used for windows, seats, sun roof, mirrors, steering columns, windshield wiper, climate control blowers, etc. In this paper, a study was conducted to identify sound quality factors that contribute to customer's satisfaction and preference of the window lift system. Jury test for subjective evaluation was carried out and sound quality index was developed. Averaged sound pressure level and sharpness were significant factors when glass moves down. Also, maximum loudness at stop section and averaged loudness were significant factor when glass moves up. Noise source identification was carried out for the reduced the loudness and sharpness during glass transferred section and impulsive noise at stop section, Using the source identification result, several improvement points were applied. And finally, the degree of sound quality improvement was judged using sound quality index.

  • A 5-valve(intake 3-valve) engine has been developed to increase engine performance. These engines have a high power caused by the decrease of inertia mass of an intake valve and the increase of intake effective area. In this study, in-cylinder flow patterns were visualized with laser sheet method and velocity profiles at near intake valves were inspected by using a two-color PIV. In addition, steady flow tests were performed to quantify tumble ratio of flow-fields generated by a tumble control valve(TCV). Experimental results of steady flow test show that the cure of tumble ratio in intake 3-valve engine farmed as a S shape with valve lift changes. This tendency is different from the one in intake 2-valve engine. Using laser sheet method and two color PIV method, we can find that the intake flow through upper valve increases and the velocity gradient also slightly increases as valve lift increases. From this study, the in-cylinder flow characteristics around intake valves were made clearly.

  • This study is a thermal and flow analysis of Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) pipe line for 250 kW grade waste gas heat recovery. We attempted to obtain the boundary condition data through the process design of the ORC, which can produce an electric power of 250 kW through the recovery of waste heat. Then, we conducted a simulation by using STAR-CCM+ to verify the model for the pipe line stream of the 250 kW class waste heat recovery system. Based on the results of the thermal and flow analyses of each pipe line applied to the ORC system, we gained the following conclusion. The pressure was relatively increased at the pipe outside the refracted part due to the pipe shape. Moreover, the heat transfer amount of the refrigerant gas line is relatively higher than that of the liquid line.

  • This study investigated the heat dissipation characteristics of a heat-sensitive LED. More than 80% of the power supply is converted into heat energy, which has a fatal impact on the lifetime of the LED. Therefore, the effective heat dissipation characteristics of a heatsink, such as a 30W floodlight, through forced convection were grasped and the heat transfer characteristics were tested. As a result, it was confirmed that the smaller the number of fins, the more the temperature distribution varies according to the wind velocity. In addition, the larger the number of fins, the smaller the temperature difference according to the wind velocity. Therefore, it was found through this experiment that excellent heat dissipation performance was exhibited as the heat dissipation area and wind velocity increased.

  • In this paper, a structural stability analysis of the swash plate hydraulic piston pump installed on hydraulic supply systems in marine vessels is presented. In order to verify the integrity of the pump design, a standard structural analysis technique based on the finite element method has been applied for various operating and boundary conditions. For the maximum operational torque (223 N·m) at 5°, 10°, and 15° of the swash plate angle, the maximum deformation, equivalent stress and safety factor are evaluated. The analytical results show that under current operating conditions, the structural reliability of the design has been confirmed.

  • In this paper, a flow analysis of a swash-plate type hydraulic piston pump installed on a hydraulic flow supply system for marine vessels is presented. A model and governing equations for computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analyses of swash-plate type hydraulic piston pumps were built, and simulation results regarding the internal flow field of the pump were obtained. By analyzing the internal flow of the swash-plate type hydraulic piston pump, we can confirm the time-dependent stroke of each piston as the pump rotates. We also verified that by analyzing the pulsating flow against the slope of the swash plate, the simulation results match well with the experimental results. The natural frequency of the system was computed to be approximately 380 Hz by applying and analyzing the fast Fourier transform (FFT) of each swash plate slope evaluated.

  • Vortex-induced vibrations are a type of flow-induced vibrations caused by alternating lift forces. With increasing demand for renewable energy, the application of vortex-induced vibrations to renewable energy has been widely studied. Vortex-induced vibrations for aquatic clean energy (VIVACE) converter is a renewable energy device that generates electricity from rivers or oceans using vortex-induced vibrations. To increase the design life and power harnessing capacity of the VIVACE converter, the estimation of fluid forces due to vortex-induced vibrations is essential. Herein, vortex-induced vibrations were experimentally tested, and their amplitude and frequency response were measured. The amplitude results showed four different branches: initial branch, upper branch, lower branch, and desynchronization range. According to the fluid force coefficient results, the maximum lift coefficient occurred at the upper branch. Additionally, a mathematical model is proposed to estimate fluid forces due to vortex-induced vibrations without using measurement devices. This mathematical model enables the estimation of fluid force coefficients and phase lag using amplitude and frequency response of vortex-induced vibrations.

  • Recently, the demand for energy storage has increased, serial cell configurations are commonly used for high-capacity secondary batteries. Initially, when identical cells are configured in series, the battery cells operate without voltage differences. However, over time, voltage imbalances occur due to differences in the environmental and physical properties of the cells. In addition, the unique characteristics of cells change during charging and discharging, which greatly affects to the degradation of battery efficiency and performance. Various cell balancing techniques have been proposed to achieve high efficiency and performance in battery. This paper proposes a minimum voltage selective balancing topology based on a flyback converter for module balancing of batteries based on active cell balancing techniques. In the proposed topology, the output voltage of each battery is shared through a single transformer, the energy from the converter's primary side is transferred to the battery modules with the minimum voltage. The proposed module balancing circuit can be easily applied to the battery reuse industry. The proposed minimum voltage battery module selective balancing topology was verified through PSIM simulations and experiments.
