  • We have analyzed influence of potential rise in negative bus, which caused by decrease of power feeding line insulation, upon protecting method of DC ground protection device which detecting potential rise between negative bus and ground in order to detect ground fault in the rubber wheel system. For this purpose, we proposed negative potential equation between negative bus and ground and calculated negative potential according to system condition changes by estimating power feeding line insulation changes in steel wheel system and rubber wheel system, and equalizing DC power feeding system when ground fault occurred. Also, in order to estimate negative potential of real system, we modeled the rubber wheel system, and simulated normal status, grounding fault occurrence and power feeding line insulation changes. In normal status, negative potential did not rise significantly regardless of vehicle operation. When ground fault occurred, negative potential rose up over 300V regardless of fault resistance. However, we also observed that negative potential rose when power feeding line insulation dropped down under $1M{\Omega}$. In conclusion, our result shows that in case of rubber wheel system unlike steel wheel system, relay will be prevented maloperation and insulation status observation can be ensured when ground over voltage relay will be set 200V ~ 300V.

  • All the power generating station require dc auxiliary power systems to operate those dc components that must be available if a loss of ac power occur. Some examples of such components are auxiliary motors, circuit breakers, relays and solenoids. The dc source may be one common battery for both power and control or two separate batteries; one for power and another for control. Typically, a dc auxiliary power system is designed as an ungrounded system, instead of grounded system, so that a low-resistance ground fault on one of its two polarities will not affect the operation of the system, thus increasing system reliability and continuity of service. A ground detector should provide a high polarity-to-ground resistance so that a single ground fault occurring on the system will not affect the operation of that system. Sensitive relays have been known to energize momentarily while the cable and capacitive charge to ground shifts[1]. A power station had experienced this kind of incident and performed root cause analysis based on PC based simulation program known as PSpice. This simulation showed adapted relays on the system energize momentarily and design criteria on this relay should be corrected.

  • In DC tracking power supply system, ground faults are currently detected by the potential relay, 64P. Though 64P relay detects ground fault, it cannot Identify the faulted region which causes long traffic delays and safety problem to passengers. Two new ground fault protective relay schemes that can identify the faulted region are presented in this paper. One is bus differential protective relay and the other is ground overcurrent protective relay. Both type of relays is similar in principle to the ordinary bus differential protective relay and the ground overcurrent relay used in other power system. In DC traction power supply system, since it is ungrounded, ground fault current is not big enough to operate those relays. To solve the problem, a current control device, called device 'X', is newly introduced in both system, which enables large amount of ground fault current flow upon the positive line to ground fault. Algorithms for these relays are developed and their validity are verified by EMTP simulation.

  • The purpose of this paper is to describe a new measuring method of ground resistance for the grounding system in energized power equipment and substations. It is very difficult to measure the accurate ground resistance in energized power equipment and substations because of the noise conducted from all external connections to the grounding system and harmonics components caused by unbalanced loads and overloads. The ground resistance that is measured with existing methods includes not only the effect of desired signals but also noise components for the measurement period in grounding system. The measured value of ground resistance can entirely be different from actual value. In this paper, to eliminate 60[Hz] power system interference and harmonic components the low-pass filter method was used in the measurement of ground resistance.

  • The existing analytical expression for the voltage between the power and ground plane consist of metal-dielectric-metal board is expressed in the two dimensional infinite series. To reduce the computation time, the two dimensional infinite series is converted to the one dimensional infinite series using the summation formula of Fourier series. We applied these equations to the analysis of voltage between the $9‘{\times}4'$ size power-ground plane. The derived one dimensional infinite series shows the more rapid convergency and the more accurate result than the two dimensional infinite series. This equation can be applied to the power-ground plane analysis which needs a lot of the repeating computation.

  • Shaking table tests of the seismic behavior of a steel frame structure model were performed. The purpose of these tests was to estimate the effects of a near-fault ground motion and a scenario earthquake based on a probabilistic seismic hazard analysis for nuclear power plant structures. Three representative kinds of earthquake ground motions were used for the input motions: the design earthquake ground motion for the Korean nuclear power plants, the scenario earthquakes for Korean nuclear power plant sites, and the near-fault earthquake record from the Chi-Chi earthquake. The probability-based scenario earthquakes were developed for the Korean nuclear power plant sites using the PSHA data. A 4-story steel frame structure was fabricated to perform the tests. Test results showed that the high frequency ground motions of the scenario earthquake did not damage the structure at the nuclear power plant site; however, the ground motions had a serious effect on the equipment installed on the high floors of the building. This shows that the design earthquake is not conservative enough to demonstrate the actual danger to safety related nuclear power plant equipment.

  • During developing cubesat flight software, Communication test between cubesat and ground station is needed. For this, we have constructed indoor ground station without outdoor antenna for decreasing total cost and time. In this time, if output power of ground station is high, it will affect for cubesat transceiver to be fail. For solving this problem, ground station must be designed for output power of it to be lower than input power of cubesat satellite, and it must be verified. In this paper, first, we describe cubesat indoor ground station using UHF and VHF. Second, we describe output power decreasing test for indoor operation of ground station by attaching attenuators in the end of the output connector.

  • As the telecommunication lines bring into widespread use, one of the most important aspects related to power distribution systems is effectively to evaluate the effect on the telecommunication lines from power lines. One of the efficient methods to evaluate the effect is to measure the induced voltage of a telecommunication line as a result of a ground-loop. If the power lines cause high induced voltage, the ground reference in the telecommunication lines is no longer a stable potential, so signals may ride on the noise. A ground loop is common wiring conditions where a ground current may take more than one path to return to the grounding electrode at the arrangement between the power lines and telecommunication lines. When a multi-path connection between the power lines and telecommunication line circuits exists, the resulting arrangement is known as a ground loop. Whenever a ground loop exists, there are potential for damages or abnormal operations of the telecommunication lines. The power lines can induce the voltage on the communication line. The effects can be calculated by considering the inductances and capacitances. However, if we assume that there are only power lines, it doesn't have a practical meaning because there are conductors with other purpose in the neighborhood of the lines. If we consider that case, we need more complex system. Therefore we suggest more complex system considering the conductors with other purpose in the neighborhood of the lines. The neutral wires and the overhead ground wires are considered for calculating the induced voltage. We assume that there are the messenger wires beside the power line as a result of increased use of them. The main purpose of this paper is a study on a shielding effect of messenger wires in the distribution lines. EMTP(Electro-Magnetic Transients Program) program is used for the induced voltage calculation.

  • Ground vibrations caused by pile driving or explosive blasting can affect the stability of power line tower and its foundation. Because the characteristics of ground vibrations generally depend on the distances from the blast, the ground vibrations should be controlled by taking the distance into account. In this study, ground vibration levels were measured at the foundation of a power line tower and on ground surface adjacent to the tower. The relationships between the dominant frequencies of the ground vibrations that were measured at both locations were comparatively investigated.

  • This paper deals with the dynamic property of ground overvoltage relay in large turbine generator. Relay operation is based on detecting the fundamental voltages originating from the generator. Calculations of fault voltage and current are reviewed for the neutral ground resistance. The frequency, ampitude and waveform of individual harmonics were measured using power quality analyzer and memory hi-corder at the secondary side of ground potential transformer. The ac and dc high-potential tests were applied to evaluate the condition of generator, main and auxiliary transformer, isolated phase bus, potential transformer, surge capacitor and arrester.
