In this research, anode for SOFC has been manufactured from two different kinds of feedstock materials through thermal spraying process and the properties of the coatings were characterized and compared. One kind of feedstock was manufactured from spray drying method which includes nano-components of NiO, YSZ (300 nm) and graphite. And the other is manufactured by blending the micron size NiO coated graphite, YSZ and graphite powders as feedstock materials. Microstructure, mechanical properties and electrical conductivity of the coatings as-sprayed, after oxidation and after hydrogen reduction containing nano composite which is prepared from spray-dried powders were evaluated and compared with the same properties of the coatings prepared from blended powder feedstock. The coatings prepared from the spray dried powders has better properties as they provide larger triple phase boundaries for hydrogen oxidation reaction and is expected to have lower polarization loss for SOFC anode applications than that of the coatings prepared from blended feedstock. A maximum electrical conductivity of 651 S/cm at $800^{\circ}C$ was achieved for the coatings from spray dried powders which much more than that of the average value.

Ceramic based nanocomposite, in which nano-sized ceramics and metals were dispersed within matrix grains and/or at grain boundaries, were successfully fabricated in the ceramic/cerarnic and ceramic/metal composite systems such as $Al_2O_3$/SiC, $Al_2O_3$/$Si_3N_4$, MgO/SiC, mullite/SiC, $Si_3N_4/SiC, $Si_3N_4$/B, $Al_2O_3$/W, $Al_2O_3$/Mo, $Al_2O_3$/Ni and $ZrO_2$/Mo systems. In these systems, the ceramiclceramic composites were fabricated from homogeneously mixed powders, powders with thin coatings of the second phases and amorphous precursor composite powders by usual powder metallurgical methods. The ceramiclmetal nanocomposites were prepared by combination of H2 reduction of metal oxides in the early stage of sinterings and usual powder metallurgical processes. The transmission electron microscopic observation for the $Al_2O_3$/SiC nanocomposite indicated that the second phases less than 70nm were mainly located within matrix grains and the larger particles were dispersed at the grain boundaries. The similar observation was also identified for other cerarnic/ceramic and ceramiclmetal nanocornposites. The striking findings in these nanocomposites were that mechanical properties were significantly improved by the nano-sized dispersion from 5 to 10 vol% even at high temperatures. For example, the improvement in hcture strength by 2 to 5 times and in creep resistance by 2 to 4 orders was observed not only for the ceramidceramic nanocomposites but also for the ceramiclmetal nanocomposites with only 5~01%se cond phase. The newly developed silicon nitride/boron nitride nanocomposites, in which nano-sized hexagonal BN particulates with low Young's modulus and fracture strength were dispersed mainly within matrix grains, gave also the strong improvement in fracture strength and thermal shock fracture resistance. In presentation, the process-rnicro/nanostructure-properties relationship will be presented in detail. The special emphasis will be placed on the understanding of the roles of nano-sized dispersions on mechanical properties.

The n-type $Bi_2(Te,Se)_3$ powders were fabricated by melting/grinding method and were hot-pressed in order to compare thermoelectric properties of the hot-pressed specimens with those of the $Bi_2(Te,Se)_3$ ingot. Effects of mechanical milling treatment of the $Bi_2(Te,Se)_3$ powders on thermoelectric characteristics of a hot-pressed specimen were also examined. The hot-pressed $Bi_2(Te,Se)_3$ exhibited power factors of $27.3{\sim}32.3{\times}10^{-4}W/m-K^2$ which were superior to $24.2{\times}10^{-4}W/m-K^2$ of the ingot. The $Bi_2(Te,Se)_3$, hot-pressed after mechanical milling treatment of the powders, possessed a non-dimensional figure-of-merit of 1.02 at $100^{\circ}C$ and exhibited extrinsic-intrinsic transition at $130^{\circ}C$.
Structural and magnetic properties of $Fe_{50}Mn_{50}$ nanocrystalline alloys prepared by the mechanical alloying technique (using commercial Fe and Mn powders as the precursors) are studied as a function of milling time, 1 hr to 48 hrs. The nano-crystallite size and shape are examined by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The effect of milling time on structural characterization was investigated using X-ray diffractometer (XRD) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (EXAFS). Both XRD and EXAFS studies showed that the alloying process should be completed after 36 hrs milling. Concerning the magnetic behavior, the data obtained from superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUID) exhibited both magnetic saturation ($M_s$) and coercivity ($H_c$) depend strongly on the milling time, which are related to the changes in the crystallite size and magnetic dilution.

Aluminum (Al) - based powders have attracted attention as key materials for 3D printing because of their excellent specific mechanical strength, formability, and durability. Although many studies on the fabrication of 3D-printed Al-based alloys have been reported, the influence of the size of raw powder materials on the bulk samples processed by selective laser melting (SLM) has not been fully investigated. In this study, AlSi10Mg powders of 65 ㎛ in average particle size, prepared by a gas atomizing process, are additively manufactured by using an SLM process. AlSi10Mg powders of 45 ㎛ average size are also fabricated into bulk samples in order to compare their properties. The processing parameters of laser power and scan speed are optimized to achieve densified AlSi10Mg alloys. The Vickers hardness value of the bulk sample prepared from 45 ㎛-sized powders is somewhat higher than that of the 65 ㎛m-sized powder. Such differences in hardness are analyzed because the reduction in melt pool size stems from the rapid melting and solidification of small powders, compared to those of coarse powders, during the SLM process. These results show that the size of the powder should be considered in order to achieve optimization of the SLM process.
Magnesium and its alloys are attractive as light weight structural/functional materials for high performance application in automobile and electronics industries due to their superior physical properties. In order to obtain high quality products manufactured by the magnesium powders, it is important to control and understand the densification behavior of the powders. The effect of the sheath surrounding the magnesium powders on the plastic deformation and densification behavior during equal channel angular pressing was investigated in the study by experimental and the finite element methods. A modified version of Lee-Kim's plastic yield criterion, notably known as the critical relative density model, was applied to simulate the densification behavior of magnesium powders. In addition, a new approach that extracts the mechanical characteristics of both the powder and the matrix was developed. The model was implemented into the finite element method, with which powder compaction under equal channel angular pressing was simulated.
Ultrafine TiC-5%Co powders were synthesized by spray drying of aqueous solution of TiO$(OH)_2$ slurry and cobalt nitrate, followed by calcination and carbothermal reaction. The oxide powders with carbon powder was reduced and carburized at $900^{\circ}C{\sim}1250^{\circ}C$ under hydrogen atmosphere. During reduction, CO gas was mainly evolved by reducing reaction of oxides. Ultrafine TiC-5%Co powders were easily formed by carbothermal reaction at $1250^{\circ}C$ due to using ultrafine powders as raw materials. The ultrafine WC-TiC-Co alloy prepared by sintering of mixed powder of ultrafine WC-13%Co powder and ultrafine TiC-5%Co powder has higher sintered density and mechanical properties than WC-TiC-Co alloy prepared by commercial WC, TiC and Co powders.
MgO/metal nanocomposite powder mixtures were prepared by solution chemical processes to obtain suitable structure for ceramic/metal nanocomposites. Nickel or cobalt nitrate, as a source of metal dispersion, was dissolved into alcohol and mixed with magnesia powder. After calcined in air, these powders were reduced by hydrogen. Densified nanocomposites were successively obtained by Pulse Electric Current Sintering (PECS) process. The dispersed metal partical size depended on temperature and time in calcination and reduction processes. The phase analyses in the synthesized powders as a functioni of temperature were tracked using a dynamic high temperature X-ray diffractioni (HTXRD) system. Phase and crystallite size analyses were done using X-ray diffractioni and TEM. The MgO/metal nanocomposites were successfully fabricated, and ferromagnetic responses with enhanced coercive force were also investigated for these composites.

The effects of starting composition, sintering temperature and porosity on the mechanical properties of hydroxyapatite ceramics were investigated. The hydroxyapatite powder were prepared by precipitation method using Ca(NO3)2.4H2O and (NH4)2.HPO4. The obtained powders were Ca-deficient hydroxyapatites and as the Ca/P mole ration in the initial solution was increased, the particle size of the precipitates was decreased, and the decomposition of hydroxyapatite to $\beta$-TCP was controlled. The porosity, as well as Ca/P mole ratio in starting composition and sintering temperature, plays major role in the mechanical properties of dense hydroxyapatite ceramics.
Using spark plasma sintering process (SPS), Ti-6Al-4V alloy powders were successfully consolidated without any contamination happened due to reaction between the alloy powders and graphite mold. Variation of microstructure and mechanical properties were investigated as a function of SPS temperature and time. Compared with hot isostatic pressing (HIP), the sintering time and temperature could be lowered to be 10 min. and $900^{\circ}C$, respectively. At the SPS condition, UTS and elongation were about 890 MPa and 24%, respectively. Considering the density of 98.5% and elongation of 24%, further improving the tensile strength would obtain by increasing the SPS pressure.
