Ultrafine $SnO_2$ powder was prepared by the diffusion mixing gas-phase reaction of $SnCl_4$(g) and water vapor. The effects of reaction variables, such as the chloride partial pressure, the reaction temperature, and the residence time is the reactor, on the powder size were examined systematically. Calculated concentration and distribution of chemical species, using the Burke-Schumann diffusion mixing model, were compared with the experimetal results. The effects of the reaction variables on the powder size were also discussed qualitatively.
The effect of Al content on the processing of reaction-bonded $Al_2O_3$ (RBAO) ceramics using 40v/o ~ 80v/o Al-Zn-Mg alloy powder was studied in order to improve traditional RBAO ceramic processes that use ~ 40v/o pure Al powder. The influence of high Al content in starting $Al_2O_3$-Al alloy powder mixtures on its particulate characteristics, reaction-bonding, microstructure, physical and mechanical properties was revealed. Starting $Al_2O_3$-Al alloy powder mixtures with 40v/o ~ 80v/o Al alloy powder were milled, reaction-bonded, post-sintered, and characterized. With an increasing Al alloy content, the milling efficiency of Al alloy powder was lowered, resulting in a larger particle size after milling. However, in spite of the larger particle size of Al alloy powder, the oxidation, i.e., reaction-bonding, of the Al alloy was successfully completed via solid and liquid state oxidation, in which the activation energy of the oxidation was nearly the same regardless of Al alloy content. After reaction-bonding and post-sintering at $1600^{\circ}C$, RBAO ceramics from 80v/o Al alloy content showed a relative density of ~97% and a flexural strength of 251 MPa compared to ~ 96% and 353 MPa for RBAO ceramics from 40v/o Al alloy content, respectively. The lower flexural strength at 80v/o Al alloy content was due to the weak spinel phase that formed from Zn, Mg alloying elements in Al.
Fabrication of reaction-bonded $Al_2O_3$ (RBAO) ceramics using Al-Zn-Mg alloy powder was studied in order to improve traditional RBAO ceramic processing using Al powder. The influence on reaction-bonding and microstructure, as well as on physical and mechanical properties, of the particulate characteristics of the $Al_2O_3$-Al alloy powder mixtures after milling, was revealed. Variation of the particulate characteristics of this $Al_2O_3$-Al alloy powder mixture with milling time was reported previously. To start, the $Al_2O_3$-Al alloy powder mixture was milled, reaction-bonded, post-sintered, and characterized. During reaction-bonding of the $Al_2O_3$-Al alloy powder mixture compacts, oxidation of the Al alloy took place in two stages, that is, there was solid- and liquid-state oxidation of the Al alloy. The solid-state oxidation exhibited strong dependence on the density of surface defects on the Al-alloy particles formed during milling. Higher milling efficiency resulted in less participation of the Al alloy in reaction-bonding. This was because of its consumption by chemical reactions during milling, and subsequent powder handling, and could be rather harmful in the case of over-milling. In contrast to very little dependence of oxidation of the Al alloy on its particle size after milling, the relative density, microstructure, and flexural strength were strongly dependent on particle size after milling (i.e., on milling efficiency). The relative density and 4-point flexural strength of the RBAO ceramics in this study were ~98% and ~365 MPa, respectively, after post-sintering at $1,600^{\circ}C$.
Nickel ultrafine powder have been synthesized by chemical reduction of aqueous $NiSO_4$ with hydrazine at various reaction conditions. The effect of reaction conditions such as the amount of surfactant and reductor, and reaction temperature on the particle size and shape was investigated by the mean of XRD, SEM and SEM-PSA. Experiments showed that the ratio of $N_{2}H_4/Ni$ and the reaction temperature were affected on the particle size of the nickel powder. The average particle size of synthesized nickel powder increased with increasing reaction temperature regardless of the ratio of $N_{2}H_4/Ni$. Also the surfactant could influence the size and agglomeration of ultrafine powder with the reaction temperature.
This study examined the correlation of various operational factors including reaction temperature and the quantity of reductant and diluent with the characteristics of powder using $K_2$ TaF$_{7}$ as feed materials, Na as a reductant and KCl/KF as a diluent. Also to control the particle size and shape, external supply system developed, it can provide a feed material and a reductant at a fixed quantity and evaluated the characteristics of tantalum powder. When the external supply system was applied instead of the batch type process that charges feed material, reductant and diluent at the same time, it was possible to induce regular reduction reaction between feed material and reductant, which increased the recovery rate and reduced the mixture of impurities. In particular, the application of the external supply system enabled the control of reaction temperature and reaction speed according to the feeding rate of feed material during reduced reaction, and resultantly it enabled the manufacturing of granular-shaped powder with a regular granularity of 2∼3 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and purity of 99.5%.
Ag powder was prepared from $AgNO_3$ by wet chemical reduction method using various reduction agent system involving $AgNO_3$, $AgNO_2$(AgCl) and Ag complex ion aqueous solution. The pure Ag powder could be prepared regardless of reaction system but the particle shape and distribution were affected very much according to the kind of reduction agents and reaction systems. The optimum reaction system for the preparation of the silver powder having the uniform particle shape and size distribution was Ag complex ion aqueous solution-reduction agent system and in particular, $H_2O_2$ and $C_6H_8O_6$as a reduction agent leaded the more uniform particle shape and size distribution.
Since the MgB2 superconductor is simply composed of two constituents of Mg and B, its performance can be monitored easily with the change of one ingredient compared to the other. With the powder size of B less than 100 nm, two different sizes of Mg powders are used to investigate the reaction temperature dependence of MgB2 bulk samples. In the range of 630-700℃ for the duration of 30 min., the un-reacted Mg is seen only at 630℃ with Mg powder size of <5 ㎛, whereas Mg traces are detected at all the temperature range with Mg powder size of <45 ㎛. The reaction temperature dependence of MgB2 superconducting transition temperature, Tc, shows little difference whether Mg powder size is large or small in this range except for the 630℃. It is worthy of notice that the critical current densities of MgB2 show higher performance with the small size of Mg compared to the large one at all field ranges. With the Mg powder size of <45 ㎛, flux pinning is enhanced with decreasing the reaction temperature, whereas flux pinning properties is quite similar in the Mg powder size of <5 ㎛ except for the 630℃, where Mg is left behind after the reaction.
Ultrafine TiC-5%Co powders were synthesized by spray drying of aqueous solution of TiO$(OH)_2$ slurry and cobalt nitrate, followed by calcination and carbothermal reaction. The oxide powders with carbon powder was reduced and carburized at $900^{\circ}C{\sim}1250^{\circ}C$ under hydrogen atmosphere. During reduction, CO gas was mainly evolved by reducing reaction of oxides. Ultrafine TiC-5%Co powders were easily formed by carbothermal reaction at $1250^{\circ}C$ due to using ultrafine powders as raw materials. The ultrafine WC-TiC-Co alloy prepared by sintering of mixed powder of ultrafine WC-13%Co powder and ultrafine TiC-5%Co powder has higher sintered density and mechanical properties than WC-TiC-Co alloy prepared by commercial WC, TiC and Co powders.
In this study, nano-sized cobalt oxide powder with an average particle size below 50 nm was prepared from a cobalt chloride solution by the spray pyrolysis process. The influences of reaction temperature on the properties of the generated powder were examined. The average particle size of the particles formed based on the spray pyrolysis process at a reaction temperature of $700^{\circ}C$ is roughly 20 nm. Moreover, most of these particles cannot appear with an independent type, thereby coexisting in a droplet type. When the reaction temperature increases to $800^{\circ}C$, the average particle size not only increases to roughly 40 nm but also shows a more dense structure while the ratio of particles which shows a polygonal form significantly increases. As the reaction temperature increases to $900^{\circ}C$, the distribution of the particles is from roughly 70 nm to 100 nm, while most of the particle surface is more intricately close and forms a polygonal shape. When the reaction temperature increases to $1000^{\circ}C$, the particle size distribution of the powder shows an existing form from 80 nm to at least 150 nm in an uneven form. As the reaction temperature increases, the XRD peak intensity gradually increases, yet the specific surface area gradually decreases.
In conventional metallothermic reduction(MR) for obtaining tantalum powder in batch-type operation, it is difficult to control morphology and location of deposits because the reaction occurs by direct physical contact between reductants and feed materials. On the other hand, a electronically mediated reaction(EMR) is capable to overcome these difficulties through the reaction by electron transfer and have a merit of continuous process. In this study an MR and EMR method has been applied to the production of a tantalum powder by sodium reduction of $K_2TaF_7$. As the reduction temperature increases, the particle size and yield of tantalum powder obtained by MR and EMR method is increased.
