Effectiveness of Plant-Based Attractants in Preventing the Escape of Golden Apple Snails (Pomacea canaliculata) into the Ecosystem

  • The effectiveness of plant-based attractants was studied using large traps, which attracted relatively more snails in agricultural water drainage ditches and rice-cultivating environments, although their effectiveness in rice fields and lakes was limited. The rate began to rise after three hours of observation. Watermelon peel exhibited the highest apple snail attraction rate (13.8%), followed by potatoes (10.0%), and apple peel (8.8%). These values significantly differed from the attraction rate attributed to papaya leaves (F=3.84; P=0.0387). After 24 h, watermelon peel and apple peel indicated a higher rate of attraction (23.4% and 21.7%, respectively), which were significantly different compared with those of papaya leaves and potatoes (F=9.94; P=0.00455). Large bait traps outperformed funnel traps in capturing golden apple snails and trapped a significant number of snails measuring over 1 cm in size. Watermelon peel was the most effective attractant for a large bait trap, followed by apple peel, potatoes, and papaya leaves. On average, 110 snails were captured in the lure net. However, potatoes, apple peels, and papaya leaves caught an average of 93, 80, and 79 snails, respectively. Among the attractants, the lure effect of the snails was not significantly different. The efficiency of large bait traps in capturing snails, regardless of the plant attractant employed, followed the order: apple peel > watermelon peel and potatoes > papaya leaves > melon > Korean melon. Watermelon peel is highly recommended for farmer use, as well as apple peel and potatoes. Utilizing these snail attractants may contribute positively to developing a safe and environment-friendly integrated pest management strategy.

컬러감자외피 추출물의 항염활성 (Anti-inflammatory Activity of Peel Extracts in Color-fleshed Potatoes)

  • 본 연구센터에서는 백색과 황색의 기존 품종의 감자보다 anthocyanin함량이 높고 생리활성이 우수한 것으로 확인된 신품종인 컬러감자 '홍영'과 '자영'을 개발하였으며, 차후 컬러감자를 산업화 용도로 가공 시 전량 폐기되는 외피의 활용도를 높이기 위하여 다음과 같은 생리활성 연구를 실시하였다. 컬러감자외피의 추출물과 분획물을 이용하여 항염증 효과를 검토한 결과, 대식세포인 RAW264.7 cell에서 염증매개물질인 lipopoly sacchride(LPS)로 염증을 유발시켜 nitric oxide(NO), prostagland-in $E_2(PGE_2)$ inducible nitric oxide synthase(iNOS), 그리고 cyclo oxygenase-2(COX-2)같은 염증유발인자들의 억제효과를 확인하였다. 자색감자인 자영외피 Chloroform분획물의 염증유발인자 억제 시 $IC_{50}$ value를 측정하여 $25{\sim}50{\mu}g/ml$의 농도에서 유의성 있는 항염증 효과를 보였다. Nitric oxide 생성을 농도의존적으로 현저하게 저해하는 농도는 $36.15{\mu}g/ml$이며, 세포독성이 없는 최고 농도인 $100{\mu}g/ml$의 농도에서 LPS에 의해 유도된 $PGE_2$를 76.68%만큼 유의성 있는 저해 효과를 보였다. 그리고 iNOS와 COX-2단백질을 유의성 있게 저해하는 농도는 $50{\mu}g/ml$ 처리였으며, 특이적으로 iNOS는 $25{\mu}g/ml$을 처리하였을 때부터 유의성 있는 저해효과를 보였다. 따라서 본 연구 결과는 자영외피의 chloroform 분획물이 유의성 있는 항염증 효과를 나타내며, 이러한 효능은 예방의학적 기능성을 충분이 가지고 있기에 염증성질환의 예방을 위한 건강기능성식품의 개발가능성을 제시할 수 있을 것으로 사료된다.

인공산성비에 의한 벼, 콩, 감자, 고추의 피해양상 (Damage of Rice, Soybean, Potato, and Red Pepper as Affected by Simulated Acid Rain)

  • 인공산성비를 처리하였을 때 작물이 입는 피해양상 상호간의 관계를 알아보기 위하여 벼(일품벼), 콩(만리콩), 감자(대지), 고추(풍촌)에 pH 1.8, 2.3, 2.8인 인공산성비와 PH 6.0인 인공비를 출아 또는 정식 후 30일 부터 수확기까지 2주 간격(감자는 1주 간격)으로 처리하여 얻은 결과는 다음과 같다. 1. 인공산성비에 의한 잎의 가시적 피해는 벼, 콩, 고추는 pH 1.8과 2.3처리에서는 갈색 반점으로 나타났고, pH가 낮을수록 피해가 더 심했다. 감자는 어느 pH의 인공산성비 처리에서도 가시적 피해가 없었다. 2. 엽록소 함량은 벼와 감자에서는 인공산성비 처리간에 차이가 없었지만 고추와 콩에서는 인공산성비 pH가 낮을수록 잎의 엽록소 함량이 감소하였다. 3. 광합성 능력은 벼에서는 인공산성비 pH간에 차이가 없었다. 그러나 콩, 감자, 고추는 pH 2.8과 6.0에서는 차이가 없었으나 pH 2.8이하에서는 pH가 낮을수록 광합성 능력이 감소하였다. 4. 벼, 콩, 감자의 수량은 인공산성비 pH간에 차이가 없었으나 고추에서는 인공산성비의 pH가 낮을수록 과장, 과경, 1 과중, 주당 과실수, 과실 수량은 감소하였다. 5. 산성비에 대한 내성이 큰 벼와 감자에서는 가시적 피해가 다른 조사형질과는 상관이 없었다. 한편 내성이 약한 콩과 고추에서 가시적 피해는 콩의 엽록소 함량과 광합성 능력, 고추의 광합성 능력과 수량간에 부의 상관이 있었다.

간이 큐어링 설비를 이용한 큐어링 처리가 장기간 저장 중 고구마의 품질 개선에 미치는 영향 (Application of Simplified Curing Unit for the Extension of Storage Life and Improvement of Physicochemical Quality of Sweet Potatoes during Long-term Storage)

  • 본 연구는 기존의 농가 보급형 고구마 저장고에 가열기(본체), 환기팬, 배풍구 팬, 습도 조절을 위한 관으로 구성된 간이 큐어링 설비를 부가시킨 후, 그 효과를 검증하기 위하여 수행되었다. 6일간의 큐어링 처리 기간 동안 저장고 내 기온 및 상대습도는 $32^{\circ}C$, 90%로 설정되었다. 고구마의 저장 기간(6 개월) 동안 1개월에 1회씩 표본을 수집하여 물리화학적 품질을 측정한 결과, 부패율과 부패 정도를 함께 보여주는 McKinney Index는 큐어링 처리구의 경우 0.83%였으며, 큐어링 처리를 하지 않은 대조구의 경우 5.08%였다. 큐어링 처리구의 경도 및 당도, 건물율은 모두 대조구보다 높았으며, 대조구의 표피색이 큐어링 처리구보다 빠르게 변하여 큐어링 처리가 저장기간 동안 고구마의 변색을 지연시켰음을 알 수 있었다. 본 연구를 통하여 간이 큐어링 설비를 이용한 큐어링 처리는 초기 비용이 많이 소모되는 일반 큐어링 설비를 대체하여 고구마의 물리화학적 품질을 증진시킬 수 있으며, 저장 기간을 늘릴 수 있음을 알 수 있었다.

광 반사방식을 이용한 감염 씨감자 비파괴 선별 기술 개발 (Development of non-destructive measurement method for discriminating disease-infected seed potato using visible/near-Infrared reflectance technique)

  • Pathogenic fungi and bacteria such as Pectobacterium atrosepticum, Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. sepedonicus, Verticillium albo-atrum, and Rhizoctonia solani were the major microorganism which causes diseases in seed potato during postharvest process. Current detection method for disease-infected seed potato relies on human inspection, which is subjective, inaccurate and labor-intensive method. In this study, a reflectance spectroscopy was used to classify sound and disease-infected seed potatoes with the spectral range from 400 to 1100 nm. Partial least square discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) with various preprocessing methods was used to investigate the feasibility of classification between sound and disease-infected seed potatoes. The classification accuracy was above 97 % for discriminating disease seed potatoes from sound ones. The results show that Vis/NIR reflectance method has good potential for non-destructive sorting for disease-infected seed potatoes.

감자와 고구마의 충격 및 압축 특성에 관한 연구 (Mechanical Behavior of Potato and Sweet Potato under Impact and Compression Loading)

  • Mechanical properties of potato and sweet potato were measured under impact and compression loading. The test apparatus consisted of disgital storage oscilloscope and simple mechanisms which can apply compression and impact forces to potatoes and sweet potatoes. The mechanical properties could be measured while the tissues were ruptured in a very short period time less than 10 ms by impact loading. Rupture force, energy, and deformation were measured as mechanical properties of potatoes and sweet potatoes under impact and compression loading. Rupture forces under impact and compression loading were in the range of 84.1 to 93.7N and 128.9 to 132.2N for external tissues and 60.1 to 64.8N and 158.9 to 171.1N for internal tissues of potato and sweet potato, respectively. Compression speeds and drop heights for each test were in the range of 1.25 to 62.5mm/min and 8 to 24cm.

감자의 조리방법에 따른 물성 변화 (A Study of Rheology with Cooking Methods of Potato)

  • This study is an attempt that Rheology changes are occurred by boiling, frying, and boiling potatoes with soy bean sauce. Three different methods are tested for chemical analysis, fine potato starch grain structural change, sensory evaluation. 1) Alkaline number and acidity number are changed (+)2.17 in raw, decreased (+)1.76 by boiling, increased (+)2.38 by frying, and (-)2.22 by boiling with soy bean sauce. 2) Potatoes are completely dissolved into the gelatinization when they are boiled at 10$0^{\circ}C$ for 15minutes(PB III), fried at 18$0^{\circ}C$ for 3 minutes(PF IV), and boiled with soy bean sauce l0$0^{\circ}C$ for 30 minutes(PS III). 3) The pectin content ratio is decreased according to frying (31.78$\mu\textrm{g}$/$m\ell$), boiling(44.20$\mu\textrm{g}$/$m\ell$), boiling soy bean sauce(36.37 $\mu\textrm{g}$/$m\ell$), Hemicellulose content ratio is decreased according to frying(1.19%), boiling(1.17%), boiling soy bean sauce(0.92%). And the contend of cellulose and lignin is still regardless of any cooking method. 4) The sensory evaluation conducted by 30 university students as panelists showed that there are more significant differences among four samples in appearance, flavour, texture. As a result, the optimum cooking condition for potatoes is that potatoes are boiled l0$0^{\circ}C$ for 15minutes, fried at 18$0^{\circ}C$ for 3minutes, and boiled with soy bean sauce at 1$0^{\circ}C$ for 30minutes.

Variations in Root and Tuber Crops Production due to Climate Change

  • Climate change which occuring the recent abrupt fluctuations in meteorological and climatological elements is bound, brings about more significant impacts and changes in human life One of the most important problems due to the impacts of climate change tends to have been decreased the food production, which is expected to make crop resources more and more important. Accordingly, agricultural meteorology should also become more important. In this study, the correlation between meteorological elements and root and tuber crops (potatoes and sweet potatoes), which are emergency crops, and meteorological elements were analyzed, and the impacts of climate changes on the production of such crops were examined. This study concludes that agriculture and food resources are important, and suggests that we should prepare for changes in crops, the weaponization of food, and the lack of water resources in the future. The meteorological element and crops element correlation analysis results. Sweet potatoes, which are negatively influenced by climate change, need breeding improvement and cultivation method development, and potatoes, which are positively influenced by climate change, require preparations for climate changes that exceed the climatic limit. The variations of agricultural production contributed to changes in crop production. Therefore, the importance of agricultural meteorology and the food crop industry should be fully recognized to prepare for climate change.

영상처리를 이용한 고구마 자동 선별시스템 개발 (Development of an Automatic Sweet Potato Sorting System Using Image Processing)

  • Grading and sorting an indeterminate form of agricultural products such as sweet potatoes and potatoes are a labor intensive job because its shape and size are various and complicate. It costs a great deal to sort sweet potato in an indeterminate forms. There is a great need for an automatic grader fur the potatoes. Machine vision is the promising solution for this purpose. The optical indices for qualifying weight and appearance quality such as shape, color, defects, etc. were obtained and an on-line sorting system was developed. The results are summarized as follows. Sorting system combined with an on-line inspection device was composed of 5 sections, human inspection, feeding, illumination chamber, image processing & control, and grading & discharging. The algorithms to compute geometrical parameters related to the external guality were developed and implemented for sorting the deformed sweet potatoes. Grading accuracy by image processing was $96.4\%$ and the processing capacity was 10,800 pieces per hour.

γ -Aminobutyric Acid (GABA) Content of Selected Uncooked Foods

  • We analyzed the ${\gamma}$-aminobutyric acid (GABA) content of a selection of uncooked foods. Foods with GABA concentrations in excess of 100 nmole per g dry weight included: brown rice germ, brown rice sprouts, barley sprouts, bean sprouts, beans, corn, barley, brown rice, spinach, potatoes, sweet potatoes, yams, kale and chestnuts. Cereals included: brown rice germ, brown rice sprouts, barley sprouts, bean sprouts, beans, corn, barley, and brown rice and had GABA concentrations of 718, 389, 326, 302, 250, 199, 190, and 123 nmole per g dry weight (DW), respectively. The vegetables: spinach, potatoes, sweet potatoes, yams and kale contained 414, 166, 137, 129, 122 nmole GABA per g DW, respectively. The GABA concentration of chestnut was 188 nmole per g DW. However, oatmeal, adlay, broccoli, squash, carrots, onion, apples, lentinus edodes, green laver, and lactobacillus had GABA concentrations of less than 100 nmole per g DW. These results show that brown rice germ, sprouted cereals and spinach are good sources of plant-derived GABA. These data will be useful in selecting foods for the manufacturing of uncooked foods containing a relatively high concentrations of GABA.
