Effect of Virus Free Stocks of Sweetpotato Cultivated at Different Regions (지역을 달리하여 재배한 고구마 바이러스 무병묘 효과)

  • To analysis of virus free sweetpotato effect, 5 virus free sweetpotato and virus normal sweetpotato varieties were planted in 5 different regions at 2010 year. The average yields of virus free sweetpotato are showed different results according to regions. Sinjami which cultivated at Iksan were increased maximum 68% compare to normal. However, Sinjami which cultivated in Hamyang were decreased yield 11% compare to normal. Analysis of tuber formation ratio of Sinjami, Yenhwangmi, Singeonmi which cultivated in Nonsan were decreased tuber number compare to normal. However, 3 varieties were all increased on Average storage root weight and yield of marketable storage root. In the results of analysis of marketable storage root according to cultivated regions and varieties, all varieties except Sinjami which cultivated in Hamyang were increased yield. Also, quality of virus free sweetpotato were enhanced 7 to 9 compare to virus infected sweet potato which showing average 3. Contents of starch between virus free and virus infected sweetpotato were not affected by virus. Virus free sweetpotato were more increased starch products according to increased total production yield. Also, $Brix^{\circ}$(%) was not showing difference between virus free and virus infected sweetpotatoes. In this experiment, Virus free sweetpotato are enhanced production yields and quality. Therefore, we suggested that virus free sweetpotato is one of the methods to reduce damage by sweetpotato virus.

Effect of Electron Beam Irradiation on the Development and Reproduction of Phthorimaea operculella (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) (전자빔 조사가 감자뿔나방의 발육과 생식에 미치는 영향)

  • The potato tuber moth, Phthorimaea operculella (Zeller) has been known as a quarantine pest of potato. This study investigated inhibition doses of electron beam irradiation (EBM) by comparing their effects on the development and reproduction and DNA damage of the insect pest. Eggs (0-12 h old), larvae (3rd and 5th instar), pupae (less than 1 d old after pupation) and adults (less than 1 d old after emergence) were irradiated with increasing doses of EBM. The EBM with 150 Gy could not completely prevent the hatchability of eggs and pupation of the hatched larvae. The hatchability from the irradiated eggs were 19.3%. However, adult emergence from the irradiated eggs were completely inhibited. When 3rd and 5th instar larvae were irradiated at 100 Gy, the adult emergence from the irradiated larvae and the fecundity of the adults were completely inhibited. When pupae and adults were irradiated at 300 Gy and 400 Gy, respectively, the hatchability of the F1 eggs was completely inhibited. The alkaline comet assay on the level of DNA damage by EBM in P. operculella adults indicates that the EBM increased DNA damage level in a dose-dependent manner, and the damage was repaired in a time-dependent manner. These results may recommend EBM of 150 Gy as a phytosanitary treatment for P. operculella. However further confirmative study is required for the practical application of this EBM dose for P. operculella disinfestation.

Analysis of Korean Dietary Patterns using Food Intake Data - Focusing on Kimchi and Alcoholic Beverages (식품섭취량을 활용한 우리나라 식이 패턴 분석 - 김치류 및 주류 중심으로)

  • In this study, we analyzed Korean dietary habits with food intake data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) and the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and we proposed a set of management guidelines for future Korean dietary habits. A total of 839 food items (1,419 foods) were analyzed according to the food catagories in "Food Code", which is the representative food classification system in Korea. The average total daily food intake was 1,585.77 g/day, with raw and processed foods accounting for 858.96 g/day and 726.81 g/day, respectively. Cereal grains contributed to the highest proportion of the food intake. Over 90% of subjects consumed cereal grains (99.09%) and root and tuber vegetables (95.80%) among the top 15 consumed food groups. According to the analysis by item, rice, Korean cabbage kimchi, apple, radish, egg, chili pepper, onion, wheat, soybean curds, potato, cucumber and pork were major (at least 1% of the average daily intake, 158.6 g/day) and frequently (eaten by more than 25% of subjects, 5,168 persons) consumed food items, and Korean spices were at the top of this list. In the case of kimchi, the proportion of intake of Korean cabbage kimchi (64.89 g/day) was the highest. In the case of alcoholic beverages, intake was highest by order of beer (63.53 g/day), soju (39.11 g/day) and makgeolli (19.70 g/day), and intake frequency was high in order of soju (11.3%), beer (7.2%), and sake (6.6%). Analysis results by seasonal intake trends showed that cereal grains have steadily decreased and beverages have slightly risen. In the case of alcoholic beverage consumption frequency, some kinds of makgeolli, wine, sake, and black raspberry wine have decreased gradually year by year. The consumption trend for kimchi has been gradually decreasing as well.
