Purpose: This study aimed to identify the effect of individualized education on stroke patients' post-discharge anxiety and self-care compliance. Methods: It was a pretest-posttest design with non-equivalent groups. A total of 32 hospitalized stroke patients in experimental group were given individualized education three times at one day before, the day of and one week after discharge. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test and $x^2$-test. Results: The scores of anxiety at posttest were $45.66{\pm}9.58$ in control group and $35.44{\pm}8.21$ in the experimental group. Self-compliance scores were $44.00{\pm}7.99$ in control and $61.06{\pm}7.69$ in the experimental group. These indicate that anxiety score is significantly lower (t=-4.58, p<.001), and self-compliance score is significantly higher (t=8.70, p<.001) in experimental group. Conclusion: If stroke patients receive a relevant individualized education, it could help reduce their anxiety. Also it would be useful to maintain and improve their self-care compliance after discharge.

Backgrounds & Objectives : The aim of study was to evaluate post stroke cognitive deficit. We applied CERAD-K for post-stroke cognitive deficit, and revalued after treatment for 4 weeks. Methods : We applied CERAD-K test to 25 patients with post stroke cognitive deficit and compared with previous literature. After acupuncture treatment, moxa treatment, herb medicines, physical and occupational therapy for 4 weeks, we revalued changes by CERAD-K to 13 people that received treatment. Results : The stroke group's points were lower than the normal group in general cognition. Verbal fluency, MMSE-KC, and constructional praxis scores was lower than the AD group. Boston Naming Test, word list immediate recall, word list delayed recall, wordlist recognition, and praxis delayed recall scores were higher than the AD group. Verbal fluency (p=0.017), MMSE-KC (p=0.026), and word list immediate recall (p=0.005) scores of 13 patients participating in this study showed a statistically significant increase after treatment. Conculsions : Acupuncture treatment, moxa treatment, herb medicines, physical and occupational therapy are effective for improvement of post-stroke cognitive deficit, but this study could not demonstrate whether some treatments influenced cognition and there was a limitation in lacking a control group.

Purpose : Lower extremity orthoses have been used as conservative methods to recover gait of the stroke patients. The purpose of this study is to examine how newly designed pelvic belt orthosis can improve gait ability and dynamic balance of adults with Hemiparesis after stroke. Methods : 22 patients who had hemiparesis after stroke participated in this study. Two groups were randomly created by assigning 10 subjects to the experimental group and the rest of the 12 subjects to the control group. The control group was treated by conventional physical therapy and occupational therapy. Identical therapy protocols were used to treat the experimental group who were assigned to wear the pelvic belt orthosis during post measurement. This study has a group of independent variables including group, gender, age, height, MAS, lesion side, cause and a group of dependent variables including gait speed, cadence, step length, stride length, and dynamic balance. The GAITRite system was used to measure spatial-temporal gain parameters and the balance system SD to measure dynamic balance. The data was analyzed using R version 3.3.1. Random forest, boosting algorithm, and MANOVA test were conducted to determine the effects of independent variables on dependent variables. Results : This study has a group of independent variables including group, gender, age, height, MAS, lesion side, cause and a group of dependent variables including gait speed, cadence, step length, stride length, and dynamic balance. The independent variable "group" has the most important value, which is approximately 25.42 (%IncMSE) representing a value three times greater than the second important predictor "height." Conclusion : As a result of this research, the hypothesis is validated with conclusion that Pelvic Belt orthosis could be effectively used for improving gait ability and balance of the patients with post-stroke hemiparesis.
Objective : A large proportion of stroke survivors have to deal with problems in gait. Proper evaluation of gait must be undertaken to understand the sensorimotor impairment underlying locomotor disorders post stroke. Methods : The characteristics of gait pattern with post stroke are reviewed in this paper. In particular, temporal distance parameters, kimematics, kinetics, as well as energy cost, EMG are focused. Results : The technology for gait analysis is moving rapidly. The techniques of 3D kinematic and kinetic analysis can provide a detailed biomechanical description of normal and pathological gait. This article reviews gait analysis method and characteristics of post stroke. Finally current method of gait analysis can provide further insight to understand paretic gait and therapeutic direction.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare to aquatic treadmill and anti-gravity treadmill gait training to improve balance and gait abilities in stroke patients. Methods: All subjects were randomly divided into three groups where nine subjects were in the aquatic treadmill group, eight subjects in the anti-gravity treadmill group, and ten subjects in the control group. Subjects in the aquatic treadmill group and the anti-gravity treadmill group received gait training during 30 minutes, with 3 sessions per week for 4 weeks, and subjects in all groups received conventional physical therapy during 30 minutes, with 5 sessions per week for 4 weeks. All subjects were assessed with the Berg balance scale (BBS), timed up and go test (TUG) and 10-meter walk test (10MWT) pre and post intervention. Results: Results showed that BBS, TUG and 10MWT scores significantly improved post-intervention (p<0.05), and the control group also had significantly improved in all areas pre-post intervention (p<0.05). In addition, it has been confirmed that aquatic treadmill group and anti-gravity treadmill group had significantly improved in BBS, TUG and 10MWT scores compared with the control group (p<0.05). However, no significant difference was found in the comparison between the aquatic treadmill and the anti-gravity treadmill group. Conclusion: Finding of this study suggested that aquatic treadmill and anti-gravity treadmill improves balance and gait abilities in stroke patients.

Objective : We aimed to investigate the correlation between the success of recanalization and a modified version of the Qureshi grading system in acute ischemic stroke patients. Methods : We retrospectively analyzed the intra-arterial thrombolysis (IAT) records of 37 patients who were evaluated by Thrombolysis in Myocardial Infarction (TIMI) and a modified version of the Qureshi grading systems as follows : 1) post-IAT Qureshi grade, 2) modified ${\Delta}$ Qureshi grade : pre-IAT group grade - post-IAT group grade (grade 1 : Qureshi grades 0-2 and grade 2 : Qureshi grade 3-5) and 3) ${\Delta}$ Qureshi grade (post-IAT Qureshi grade - pre-IAT Qureshi grade). Successful recanalization was defined as follows : 1) post-IAT TIMI grades 2 and 3, 2) post-IAT Qureshi grade 0-2, 3) modified ${\Delta}$ Qureshi grade=1, and 4) ${\Delta}$ Qureshi grade of ${\geq}2$ and/or post-IAT Qureshi grade=0. We investigated the correlation between the post-IAT TIMI grade and the modified Qureshi grade and also compared the various grading systems with modified Rankin Scale scores for evaluating the clinical outcome at 3 months. Results : The post-IAT Qureshi grade and ${\Delta}$ Qureshi grade and/or post-IAT Qureshi grade were significantly correlated with the TIMI grade (${\gamma}$=0.976 and, 0.942, respectively). Further, post-IAT Qureshi grade and ${\Delta}$ Qureshi grade and/or post-IAT Qureshi grade showed a significantly stronger association with clinical outcome than did the post-IAT TIMI grade (p=0.001 and, 0.000 vs. 0.083, respectively). Conclusion : Our preliminary results suggest that the modified Qureshi grading system is a useful tool for assessing the success of recanalization after IAT.
Objective : We studied only patients at the acute stage but existing studies on stroke didn't almost classify the stage. We examined 243 patients admitted to the Woo Suk university oriental medical hospital from January 1998 to December 1999 for 2 years. Methods : We analyzed patients into sex, Sasang constitution, the incidence and lesion according to the stroke types, post and family history, onset time, period to admission and physical treatment from onset, and symptom, blood pressure, cholesterol level and herb medicine at entry. Results : Our study was similar to existing studies in the distribution of sex, age and the lesion of stroke, post and family history, and symptoms at entry. But it differed in the constitution, incidence of cerebral infarction and intracranial hemorrhage, attack time, period to admission and physical treatment from onset day, and the symptoms, blood pressure, cholesterol level and herb medication. In comparison between infarction and hemorrhage patients, there was some difference in the distribution of onset time, but wasn't in the cholesterol level. Conclusions : Our study on the acute stage of stroke was similar to existing studies in the general characteristics. But it showed some differences in the herb medicine at entry. In particular, there were much differences in the blood pressure at entry and the incidence of infarction and hemorrhage. We hoped that stroke patients would be synthetically studied in western and oriental medicine.

The cerebellum is known to control balance, equilibrium, and muscle tone. If the cerebellum becomes damaged, the body is unable to retain its balancing functions or involuntary muscle movement. This is why, in stroke patients, there is a high risk of functional disability, as well as a myriad of other disabilities secondary to stroke. Ischemia was induced in SD mice by occluding the common carotid artery for 5 minutes, after which blood was reperfused. Needle electrode electrical stimulation(NEES) was applied to acupuncture points, at 12, 24, and 48 hours post-ischemia on the joksamri. Protein expression was investigated through caspase-3 antibody immuno-reactive cells in the cerebral nerve cells and Western blotting. The results were as follows: The number of caspase-3 reactive cells in the corpus cerebellum 12 and 24 hours post-ischemia was significantly (p<.05) smaller in the NEES group compared to the GI group. caspase-3 expression 12 and 24 hours post-ischemia was significantly(p<.05) smaller in the NEES group compared to the GI group. Based on these results, NEES seems to have a significant effect on Caspase-3 in the cerebellum in an ischemic state at 12 and 24 hours post ischemia, NEES delays the occurrence of early stage apoptosis-inducing Caspase-3, delaying and inhibiting apoptosis. Further systematic studies will have to be conducted in relation to the application of this study's results on stroke patients.
Purpose: This study was to evaluate the effects of a rehabilitation exercise program on physical function and mental health status in chronic stroke Patients with hemiparesis Method: This study used a single group experimental design with repeated measures. Data collection and intervention were done from August, 2004 to November. 2004 at a community.
