  • The electrical property of polymer matrix composites with added carbon powder is studied based on the temperature dependency of the conduction mechanism. The temperature coefficient of the resistance of the polymer matrix composites below the percolation threshold (x) changed from negative to positive at 0.20 < x < 0.21; this trend decreased with increasing of the percolation threshold. The temperature dependence of the electrical property(resistivity) of the polymer matrix composites below the percolation threshold can be explained by using a tunneling conduction model that incorporates the effect of the thermal expansion of the polymer matrix composites into the tunneling gap. The temperature coefficient of the resistance of the polymer matrix composites above the percolation threshold has a positive value; its absolute value increased with increasing volume fraction of carbon powder. By assuming that the electrical conduction through the percolating paths is a thermally activated process and by incorporating the effect of thermal expansion into the volume fraction of the carbon power, the temperature dependency of the resistivity above the percolation threshold can be well explained without violating the universal law of conductivity.

  • This study deals the prediction of temperature effect on low-frequency dispersion of alternating current (AC) conductivity spectra of composite materials based on copolymer reinforced with carbon black (CB) particles. A sample of ethylene butylacrylate loaded with 13% of CB particles were prepared and investigated using the impedance spectroscopy representation in the frequency range from 40 Hz to 0.1 MHz and temperature range from $20^{\circ}C$ to $125^{\circ}C$. The dielectric constant, ${\varepsilon}^{\prime}$, and dielectric losses, ${\varepsilon}^{{\prime}{\prime}}$, were found to decrease with increasing frequency. The frequency dependence of the AC conductivity follows the universal power law with a large deviation in the high frequency region, the positive temperature coefficient in resistivity effect has been observed below the melting temperature which makes this composite potentially remarkable for industrial applications.

  • In this study, We have been investigated the effect of calcination temperature and high-energy ball-milling of powder influences the $BaTiO_3$-based PTCR(Positive Temperature coefficient Resistance) characteristics and microstructure. The mixed powder was obtained from $BaCO_3$, $TiO_2$, $CeO_2$ ball-milled in attrition mill. The mixed powder was calcine from 1000 $^{\circ}C$ to 1200 $^{\circ}C$ in air and then it was sintered in reduction- re-oxidation atmosphere. As a result, The room-temperature electrical resistivity decreased and increased with increasing calcination temperature. specially, Attrition milled powder could have low room-temperature resistivity and high PTC jump order at 1100 $^{\circ}C$. attrition milling had lower room-temperature resistivity than ball milling. Particle size decreased by Attrition milling of powder influences in calcination temperature and room-temperature resistivity.

  • Temperature dependency of resistivity of the carbon black-polyethylene composites below and above percolation threshold is studied based on the electrical conduction mechanism. Temperature coefficient of resistance of the composites below percolation threshold changed from minus to plus, increasing volume fraction of carbon black; this trend decreased with increasing volume fraction of carbon black. The temperature dependence of resistivity of the composites below percolation threshold can be explained with a tunneling conduction model by incorporating the effect of thermal expansion of the composites into a tunneling gap. Temperature coefficient of resistance of the composites above percolation threshold was positive and its absolute value increased with increasing volume fraction of carbon black. By assuming that the electrical conduction through percolating paths is a thermally activated process and by incorporating the effect of thermal expansion into the volume fraction of carbon black, the temperature dependency of the resistivity above percolation threshold has been well explained without violating the universal law of conductivity. The apparent activation energy is estimated to be 0.14 eV.

  • In this study, the effect of $Nb_2O_5$ and sintering time on the positive temperature of coefficient of resistivity (PTCR) behavior of lead free $Ba_{0.99}(Bi_{0.5}Na_{0.5})_{0.01}TiO_3$ (BBNT) ceramics were investigated in order to fabricate a PTC thermistor with high $T_c$ temperature more than $140^{\circ}C$. In particular, BBNT ceramic doped with 0.1mol% $Nb_2O_5$ and sintered at $1350^{\circ}C$ for 4 h has significantly increased Curie temperature ($T_c$) of about $200^{\circ}C$, showed good PTCR behavior of room-temperature resistivity ($\rho_{rt}$) of $40{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$, a high $\rho_{max}/\rho_{min}$ ratio of $43.78{\times}10^3$ and a large resistivity temperature factor (${\alpha}$) of 16.1%/$^{\circ}C$. With increasing addition of $Nb_2O_5$ content, the $\rho_{rt}$ decreased to a minimum value of $40\;{\Omega}cm$ at 0.1mol% $Nb_2O_5$ and the $\rho_{rt}$ increased for x value over 0.1 mol%.

  • We have prepared polymer composites of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and ionomers (Surlyn 8940) containing polar segments and metal ions by melt blending with carbon black (CB) as a conductive filler. The resistivity and positive temperature coefficient (PTC) of the ionomer/LDPE/CB composites were investigated with respect to the CB content. The ionomer content has an effect on the resistivity and percolation threshold of the polymer composites; the percolation curve exhibits a plateau at low CB content. The PTC intensity of the crosslinked ionomer/LDPE/CB composite decreased slightly at low ionomer content, and increased significantly above a critical concentration of the ionomer. Irradiation-induced crosslinking could increase the PTC intensity and decrease the NTC effect of the polymer composites. The minimum switching current (Ι$\sub$trip/) of the polymer composites decreased with temperature; the ratio of Ι$\sub$trip/ for the ionomer/LDPE/CB composite decreased to a greater extent than that of the LDPE/CB composite. The average temperature coefficient of resistance (${\alpha}$$\sub$T/) for the polymer composites increased in the low-temperature region.

  • (Ba0.8. Sr0.2) $TiO_3$ semiconducting ceramic with and without Ti-excess composition were prepared by various sintering temperature. The effects of Ti compositions on the samples were discussed in terms of color micro-structure resistivity at room temperature and the positive temperature coefficient resistivity(PTCR). The 1.02mol Ti-excess composition provides better PTCR properties and has uniform micrositructures with 5-7${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$.

  • In this study, the effects of carbon black (CB) content and anodic oxidation treatment with $AgNO_3$ on positive temperature coefficient (PTC) behavior of CB/HDPE nanocomposites were investigated. Also, the addition of elastomer as a toughing agent was studied. The 20~50 wt% of CB, 0~5 wtt% of elastomer, and 1 wt% of $AgNO_3$-filled HDPE nanocomposites were prepared using the internal mixer in 60 rpm at $160{\circ}C$ and the compression-molded at $180{\circ}C$ for 10 min. As a result, the room temperature resistivity and PTC intensity of the composites were dependent, to a large extent, on the content of CB, addition of elastomer, and surface chemical properties that were controlled in the relative arrangements of the carbon black aggregates in a polymeric matrix. Moreover, the composites with relatively low room temperature resistivity and suitable PTC intensity could be achieved by treatment of $AgNO_3$. Consequently, it was noted that PTC effect was due to the deagglomeration or the breakage of the conductive networks caused by thermal expansion or crystalline melting of the polymeric matrix.

  • The electrical properties of a laminated SMD type PTC thermistor for microcircuit protection were investigated as a function of polymer blowing agent addition. Green ceramics for multilayered $BaTiO_3$-based PTCRs were formed by doctor blade method of barium titanate powders; we successfully laminated the sintered ceramic chips to obtain 10 layer chip PTCRs with PTC effect. The sintered density increases with increasing sintering temperature. The electrical properties of the sintered samples were strongly dependent on the calcination and addition of a polymer blowing agent. When $BaTiO_3$ powders containing 0.2 mol% of $Y_2O_3$ were calcined at $1000^{\circ}C$ for 2 hrs, the resistivity jump was of 1-2 orders of magnitude. The resistivity at room temperature increases according to the polymer blowing agent addition. Also, the sample using the calcined powder showed a lower resistivity than that of the sample prepared using powders without calcinations. With an increase in the OBSH, the magnitude of the resistivity jumped as a function of the temperature increase. The resistivity of the sintered bodies after the addition of 0.5 wt% polymer blowing agent at $1290^{\circ}C$ for 2 h was shown to be about $8.5{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$; the jump order of the sintered bodies was shown to be on the order of $10^2$.

  • Effect of MoO3 additiion on the semiconductive BaTiO3 ceramics doped with 0.2 mole% Nb2O5 and their frequency characteristics have been investigated on the view of intergranular barrier layer model through the observation of changes in their electrical properties. The resistivity increases with the increase of MoO3 addition, but the capacitance, the frequency dependence of capacitance and the effect of positive temperature coefficient of resistivity (PTCR) decrease. It is explained by the possible increase in the thickness of potential barrier due to the formation of insulating layer and thus decrease in the degree of energy band bending. Both the PTCR effect and resistivity decrease with the increase of frequency due to the possible elimination of barrier layer at the grain boundary.
