  • This study investigates the differences in nasalance across handicap, gender, and vowels and the correlation between nasal energy and oral energy both of which are used to compute nasalance. For this study, 20 hearing-impaired adults and 20 normal hearing adults as a control group were asked to read 7 Korean vowels (/$\alpha$, $\Lambda$, o, u, ɯ, i, $\varepsilon$/). Subjects' readings were recorded by NasalView and analyzed by Praat. Results showed that the hearing impaired group (HL) has a significantly higher nasalance than the normal hearing group(NH), and that there was a significant positive correlation between nasal energy and oral energy. A higher nasalance of the hearing impaired group seems to be due to an improper velopharyngeal control which is caused by lack of a proper auditory feedback.

  • This paper presents an $H_{\infty)$ output feedback controller design method for linear systems with delayed state, delayed control input, and delayed masurement output. Using a Lyapunov functional, the stability for delayed systems is discussed independently of delays. Also, sufficient condition for the existence of $H_{\infty)$ controllers of any order is given in terms of three linear matrix inequalities(LMIs). Based on positive definite solutions of their LMIs, we briefly explain the way to construct $H_{\infty)$ controller, which stabilizes time-delay systems independently of delays and guarantees an $H_{\infty)$norm bound.

  • Classroom response systems (CRS) have been proven to have positive educational effects on student engagement and participation by allowing immediate feedback to both students and instructors. We explore the use of a chatbot and slide widget-based CRS to overcome some of the challenges of existing mobile-based CRSs while retaining their advantages. Our system uses widely available instant messaging services and operates web-based slide widgets that can be seamlessly integrated into instructors' slides to visualize student feedback in various formats. The student survey results indicate that our system is as effective as conventional CRSs in promoting student engagement and participation.

  • Objectives: This study measures the level of cognition of employee's patient safety culture and evaluates the current level through comparing the results to external levels. Ultimately it is performed to construct a strategic improvement plan through the basic database for patient's safety culture. Methods: A questionnaire survey of self reporting type was carried out using structured questionnaire of the patient's safety culture for employees currently employed in a hospital. Total responders was 1,129 and a response rate was 54.6%. The survey results were calculated with a percent positive response, and the current level was evaluated by comparing with the survey results of a hospital (2009 and 2014) and the survey result of The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality(2014). Results: Sub-dimension of high percent positive response for each area were 'teamwork within hospital units' (80%), 'feedback & communication about error' (73%) and 'supervisor/manager expectations & actions promoting safety' (67%). Meanwhile, 'teamwork across hospital units' (31%), 'hospital management support for patient safety' (29%), 'staffing' (27%) and 'non-punitive response to error' (17%) were relatively low percent positive response. Compared to the survey results of AHRQ (2014) for each area, 'teamwork within hospital units' (80%), 'feedback & communication about error' (73%), 'frequency of event reporting' (66%) were at the top 50% percentile level and the remaining sub-dimensions showed a very low level in the lower 10% percentile area. Conclusion: In order to establish a system for patient safety culture within the hospital and evaluate the effect on this, it is necessary to periodically evaluate the patient's safety culture and establish regulations on hospital safety culture to comply with this.

  • This study is examined for the effects of question generating strategy and feedback(teacher feedback and student peer reviews) on science achievement, self-efficiency and perception of the class in the middle school. Three classes of middle school 1st grade in a city were sampled for the study. The students in comparative group took traditional lessons and solved questions presented on worksheets distributed by a teacher. On the other hand, the students in the experimental groups 1 and 2 generated and solved questions by themselves after traditional lessons and then participated in the activity with peer's feedback and teacher's feedback, respectively. A self-efficiency test had been conducted before the treatments and the various tests such as achievement, self-efficiency and the perception of the class were carried out after treatments. The statistical results were analysed by ANCOVA, MANCOVA and t-test. The results of this study were as follows: First, there was significant difference between the control and experimental groups in the science achievement test (p<.01). But there was no significant difference between the experimental groups (p>.05). Second, both of the experimental groups showed enhanced self-efficiency compared with comparative group (p<.01). In sub-areas of self-efficiency, there were also meaningful results in the area of self-efficiency for control experimental group 1(p<.01), and in the area of difficulty preferences for experimental group 2 (p<.01). Third, the experimental group 1, given teacher's feedback, showed more positive perception of the class than the experimental group 2 that was given peer's feedback (p<.01).

  • To establish an effective performance appraisal system, ratee accountability is essential because it increases the likelihood of meaningful utilization of performance appraisal feedback. In the context of a multi-rater performance appraisal system, this study examines the effect of the ratee general accountability and accountability to the supervisor and peers on the ratee's intention to change behavior based on the performance appraisal feedback. This study further explored the moderating effect of perceived feedback specificity on the relationship between the ratee accountability and behavioral change intention. Hierarchical multiple regression analysis was conducted using the survey data from 153 employees in eight firms with multi-rater performance appraisal systems. The results showed that ratee general accountability was positively associated with the intention to change behavior. Furthermore, perceived feedback specificity attenuated the positive relationship between the ratee general accountability and behavioral change intention, which was the opposite of the hypothesized direction. The findings indicate the importance of managing and facilitating ratee accountability for implementing a multi-rater performance appraisal system. The result also emphasizes the critical role that performance appraisal feedback plays in motivating performance improvement by providing flexible, constructive advice and behavioral change strategies instead of inducing self-defense or justification.
