  • This paper describes the possibility of analyzing gait pattern from the variation of the lower leg electrical impedance. This impedance is measured by the four-electrode method. Two current electrodes are applied to the thigh, knee, and foot, and two potential electrodes are applied to the lateral, medial, and posterior position of lower leg. The correlation coefficients of the joint angle and the impedance change from human leg movement was obtained using electrogoniometer and 4ch impedance measurement system developed in this study. We found the optimal electrode position for ankle, knee and hipjoint movements based on high correlation coefficient, least interference, and maximum magnitude of impedance change. The correlation coefficients of the ankle, knee, and the hip movements -0.87, 0.957 and 0.80. respectively. From such features of the lower leg impedance, it has been made clear that different movement patterns exhibit different impedance patterns and impedance level. This system showed possibility that lower leg movement could be easily measured by impedance measurement system with a few skin-electrodes.

  • In this paper, a dynamic modeling for the velocity and position information of a single frequency stand-alone GPS(Global Positioning System) receiver is described. In static condition, the position error dynamic model is identified as a first/second order transfer function, and the velocity error model is identified as a band-limited Gaussian white noise via non-parametric method of a PSD(Power Spectrum Density) estimation in continuous time domain. A Kalman filter is proposed considering both correlated/white measurements noise based on identified GPS error model. The performance of the proposed Kalman filtering method is verified via numerical simulation.

  • The depth of the object pointed by the laser beam is computed depending on the pixel position on the CCD There involved several number of internal and external parameters such as inter-pixel distance, focal length, position and orientation of the system components in the depth measurement error. In this paper, it is shown through the error sensitivity analysis of the parameters that the most important parameters in the sense of error sources are the angle of the laser beam and the inter pixel distance. Also, the calibration technique to minimize their effect for the depth computation is proposed.

  • By setting a refractor with a certain angle against the optical axis of the CCD camera lens, the image of a measuring point recorded on the image plane is displaced by the corresponding amounts related to the distance between the camera and the measuring point. When the refractor that keeps the angle against the optical axis is rotated physically at high speed during the exposure of the camera, the image of a measuring point draws an annular streak. Since the size of the annular streak is inversely proportional to the distance between the camera and the measuring point, the 3D position of the measuring point can be obtained by processing the streak. In this paper, for one of the applications of our system, the measurement of a moving surface is introduced. In order to measure the moving surface, multi laser spots are projected on the surface of object. Each position of ...

  • A new measurement method to measure vibrational motions of objects is presented. The original principle is similar to the previous work that utilized a 3-facet mirror to obtain three dimensional positions and orientations of rigid bodies. While the previous work was presented for only stationary objects, in this paper, we newly investigate the feasibility of this method for dynamic applications. The 3-facet mirror that looks like a triangular pyramid having an equilateral cross-sectional shape. The mirror has three lateral reflective surfaces inclined 45 degrees to its bottom surface, and its mounted on the object whose motion is to be measured, As optical components, a He-Ne laser source and three position-sensitive detectors(PSD) are used. The laser beam is emitted from the He-Ne laser source located at the upright position and vertically incident to the top of the 3-facet ...

  • The INS provides high rate position, velocity and attitude data with good short-term stability while the GPS provides position and velocity data with long-term stability. By integrating the INS with GPS, a navigation system can be achieved to provide highly accurate navigation performance. For the best performance, time synchronization of GPS and INS data is very important in GPS/INS integrated system. But, it is impossible to synchronize them exactly due to the communication and computation time-delay. In this paper, to reduce the error caused by the measurement time-delay in GPS/INS integrated systems, error compensation methods using separate bias Kalman filter are suggested for both the...

  • This paper presents the development of video-based 3-dimensional tracking system. Measurement of human motion is important in the application of ergonomics. The system uses advanced direct video measurement technology. Passive retro-reflecting markers are attached to a subject and movements of markers are observed by two CCD cameras. Infrared light emitted near the CCD cameras is reflected by the markers and is detected by the cameras. The image ae captured by Samsung MVBO2 board and the center of markers is calculated by DSP program. The position of markers are transferred from MVB02 board to the computer through AT bus. The computer then tracks the position of each marker and saves the data. This system has dynamic accuracy with 1% error and the sampling rate to 6-10 Hz, and can analyse the trajectory and speed of the marker. The results of this study can be used for operators motion analysis, task analysis, and hand movement characteristic analysis.

  • For volumetric error measurement and calibration for machine tools, manufacturing machine or coordinate measuring machine (CMM), are studied using a Ball-bar artifact. A design of the Ball-bar is suggested manufactured by Invar, which is a low thermal expansion material, and precision steel balls. The uncertainty for the artifact method is discussed. A method of the Ball-bar artifact for obtaining 3-D position errors in CMM is proposed. The method of error vector measurement is shown using the Ball-bar artifact. Finally, the volumetric error is calculated from the error vectors and it can be used for Pitch error compensation in conventional NC machine and 3-D position Error map for calibration of NC machine tools.

  • In the literature on the tense consonants in Korean, it has been proposed that this consonant is underlyingly represented by a single consonant (the singleton hypothesis) and that it is represented by a sequence of two lenis consonants (the geminate hypothesis). One piece of the empirical evidence supporting the geminate hypothesis is that the closure duration of tense consonants in intervocalic position is more than twice as long in comparison with their lenis counterparts. In this paper, we report on the closure duration of three types of plosives in various phonotactically permitted contexts in Korean. The results of the measurement show that the duration of the tense consonants in post-sonorant contexts is reduced by a third in comparison with that of the intervocalic ones. These temporal differences suggest that the measurement of closure durations in intervocalic position alone is not sufficient to sustain the geminate hypothesis.

  • Near-field acoustic holography is a powerful tool to visualize sound sources. This method requires pressure measurement at many points for a good hologram. Thus one has to measure carefully so that errors due to the uncertainty of position, sensor mismatch, and so on are reduced. A method to solve this problem is to use a well-designed measurement system. This paper introduces a sound visualization system at center for noise and vibration control (NOVIC), KAIST, and addresses the advantages in terms of the error reduction. The system consists of array microphones, array jigs, a system to control the position and the velocity of the jigs, a data acquisition system, and a monitoring system. This paper also shows some sound visualization results when the system is applied to a speaker and a computer. The results verifies that the sound visualization system is useful for identifying sound sources.
