  • This paper proposes a method of using a magnetic position sensor to detect accurately the rotor position required to perform vector control of a permanent-magnet synchronous motor, particularly the initial rotor position at startup. In the existing vector control systems, the initial rotor position was determined using the output signals of the Hall sensors, or the control was performed in a sensorless method without using such a sensor. On the other hand, the accuracy is degraded due to the occurrence of a position detection error, and the practicality was not satisfactory. This paper attempts to detect the initial rotor position using a magnetic position sensor to solve this problem. This method is used to solve the deteriorating starting characteristics of the motor in the vector control system. In addition, to lower the price of a low-power vector control inverter, this paper proposes a method of integrating the existing sensors and reducing the price to less than half using a magnetic position sensor for speed and position detection.

  • Recently, as a result of the progress in power electronics and magnet technology, the applications of inverter fed BLDC Motor have increased for industry and home appliance. Also because of the high efficiency, good acoustic noise characteristic, BLDC Motor applications are growing. However, BLDC Motor requires position sensor, which has many problems such as high cost, more space and difficult to install. Therefore, sensorless control algorithm is being studied. In this paper, sensorless algorithm for interior permanent magnet BLOC motor adaptable for home appliance is proposed. The maximum torque per amp operation with advance angle considering load torque and speed was simulated and verified through the experiment.

  • In this paper, a new 'impedance sensing' method is described. This method overcomes the shortcomings of the impedance sensing method. According to the new method, sensing voltage pulse is applied to the idle phase in the minimum inductance region and the beginning of the increasing inductance region to detect rotor position. The negative torque produced by the sensing voltage pulse can be neglected in the minimum inductance region and the efficiency of SRM is improved. In the minimum inductance region the back electromotive force (EMF) can be neglected. And in the increasing inductance region the EMF opposes the rise of current in the phase, so the position estimation scheme is reliable. Therefore the new 'impedance sensing' method is sufficiently precise even under the high back EMF effect. The adjustment of turn-on angle and turn-off angle is also easy to be realized. The technique is very useful in applications where cost or size is primary concerns, such as electric bicycle drives. Experimental results are presented to verify the proposed method.

  • This paper presents a new rotor position estimation method for brushless DC motors. The estimation error of the rotor position clearly provokes the phase shift angle misaligned between the phase current and the back-EMF waveforms, which causes torque ripple in brushless DC motor drives. Such an estimation error can be reduced with the help of the proposed neutral-voltage-based estimation method, which is structured as a closed loop observer. A neutral voltage appearing during the normal mode of the inverter operation is found to be an observable and control table measure, which can be used for estimating an exact rotor position. This neutral voltage is obtained from the DC-link current, the switching logic, and the motor speed values. The proposed algorithm, which can be easily implemented by using a single DC-link current and the motor terminal voltage sensors, is verified by simulation and experiment results.

  • Speed and position sensors require the additional mounting space, reduce the reliability, and increase the cost of motor. Various control algorithms have been proposed for the elimination of speed senor. This paper compares several schemes of MRAC for field-oriented control of induction motor without speed and flux sensors. These schemes are based on observing the fluxes, the counter EMF, and the instantaneous reactive power of motor. A review of these schemes of MRAC is presented. Then sensorless drives using each estimation method are compared through simulation and experiment.

  • A mechanical angle estimator is presented in this study to achieve the sensorless control of permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) used in driving a reciprocating compressor. Braking the PMSM at a specific mechanical angular position is critical for the silent stoppage of the reciprocating compressor. The performance of conventional mechanical angle observers used in reciprocating compressor drives can be seriously affected according to gains of the speed controller because such observers rely on the magnitude of current ripples. A speed ripple-based mechanical angle estimator is proposed to solve this problem. Experimental results showed the effectiveness of the proposed method.

  • This paper introduces a indirect rotor position and speed estimation algorithm for the SRM(switched reluctance motor) sensorless control based on the sliding mode observer and evolutionary programming The information of position and speed is generally provided by encoder or resolve. However, the position sensor not only adds complexity, cost and size to the whole drive system, but also causes limitation for industrial applications. In this paper, in order to eliminate the position sensor, indirect position sensing, indirect position sensing method using sliding mode observer is used for SRM drives. But if sliding mode observer parameters are selected to be large, the corresponding rapid changes of estimated position and velocity result in chattering phenomenon. Therefore in order to reduce the chattering, this observer parameters are optimized by evolutionary programming. And PID controller is also optimized to track precisely for the SRM using evolutionary programming.

  • This paper studies particularly applicable method for sensorless PM BLDC motor drive system. The waveform of the motor internal voltages(or back emf) contains a fundamental and higher order frequency harmonics. Therefore the third harmonic component is extracted from the stator phase voltage. The resulting third harmonic signal keeps a constant phase relationship with the rotor flux for any motor speed and load condition. Also because of low resolution of estimated signal obtained by the proposed sensorless algorithm, to improve the wide range of speed response characteristic more exactly, we propose the rotor position signal synthesizer using PLL circuit based on estimated signals. Some experimental results are provided to demonstrate the validity of the proposed control method.

  • Position estimation that uses only active phase voltage and current is presented, to perform high accuracy position sensorless control of a SRM drive. By extracting the amplitude of the first switching harmonic terms of phase voltage and current for a PWM period through Fast Fourier Transform (FFT), the flux-linkage and position are estimated without external hardware circuitry, such as a modulator and demodulator, which result in increased cost, as well as large position estimation error, produced when the motional back EMF is ignored near zero speed. A two-phase SRM drive system, consisting of an asymmetrical converter and a conventional closed-loop PI current controller, is utilized to validate the performance of the proposed position estimation scheme in comprehensive operating conditions. It is shown that the estimated values very closely track the actual values, in dynamic simulations and experiments.
