  • The purpose of this study is to compare the level of risk and return of Islamic stocks in the Jakarta Islamic Index (JII) with conventional stocks on the IDX30 in the period from January 2017 to July 2019. The Sharpe ratio method is used to calculate risk and stock returns. The performance of the stock portfolio is measured by comparing the risk premium portfolio with the portfolio risk that is expressed as a standard deviation of the total risk. This study uses secondary data collected by the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX), which provides the names of stock issuers included in the JII and IDX30 indices along with their montly closing price. The results of the descriptive analysis show that the JII Sharpe ratio index from January 2017 to July 2019 is from the minimum range of -0.28820 to a maximum range of 0.05622, while the IDX30 Sharpe ratio index from January 2017 to July 2019 is from the minimum range of -0.09290 to the maximum range of 0.17436. The results of inferential analysis using a different test show that there is a significant difference between the Sharpe ratio JII and IDX30 in measuring the performance of the stock portfolio.

  • The portfolio selection is one of the most important and vital decisions that a real or legal person, who invests in stock market, should make. The main purpose of this article is the determination of the optimal portfolio with regard to relations among stock returns of companies which are active in Tehran's stock market. For achieving this goal, weekly statistics of company's stocks since Farvardin 1389 until Esfand 1390, has been used. For analyzing statistics and information and examination of stocks of companies which has change in returns, factors analysis approach and clustering analysis has been used (FC approach). With using multivariate analysis and with the aim of reducing the unsystematic risk, a financial portfoliois formed. At last but not least, results of choosing the optimal portfolio rather than randomly choosing a portfolio are given.

  • Banking institutions have been facing variety of difficulties but the major cause of serious banking problems relates to lax credit standards for borrowers and counterparties, poor portfolio risk management, or a lack of attention to changes in economic or other circumstances that can lead to deterioration in the credit standing of a bank's counterparties. Although credit risk is an important factor that financial institutions should cope with, but the determinants of measuring credit risk have been studied less. This paper attempts to explore the determinants of credit risk measurement and to identify the factors that contribute to credit risk measurement practices in Indian banks and to compare credit risk measurement practices followed by Indian public and private sector banks, the empirical study has been conducted and views of employees of various banks have been tested using statistical tools. This study explored the phenomenon from different perspectives and revealed that single-name credit risk measurement and portfolio credit risk measurement are the key components that contribute to credit risk measurement in Indian banks. From the descriptive and analytical results, it can be concluded that Indian banks efficiently measure credit risk. The results also indicate that there is a significant difference between the Indian public and private sector banks in single-name credit risk measurement while, these banks do not significantly differ in portfolio credit risk measurement aspect.

  • The prices of chemical products are fluctuated by several factors. The chemical companies can't predict and be ready to all of these changes, so they are exposed to the risk of a profit fluctuation. But they can reduce this risk by making a well-diversified product portfolio. This problem can be thought as the optimization of the product portfolio. We assume that the profits come from the 'spread' between a naphtha and a chemical product. We calculate a mean and a variation of each spread and develop an automatic module to calculate the optimal portion of each product. The theory is based on the Markowitz portfolio management. It maximizes the expected return while minimizing the volatility. At last we draw an investment selection curve to compare each alternative and to demonstrate the superiority. And we suggest that an investment selection curve can be a decision-making tool.

  • For multi-line insurance companies, allocating the risk capital to each line is a widely-accepted risk management exercise. In this article we consider several applications of the Euler capital allocation. First, we propose visual tools to present the diversification and the line-wise performance for a given loss portfolio so that the risk managers can understand the interactions among the lines. Secondly, on theoretical side, we prove that the Euler allocation is the directional derivative of the marginal or incremental allocation method, an alternative capital allocation rule in the literature. Lastly, we establish the equivalence between the mean-shortfall optimization and the RORAC optimization when the risk adjusted capital is the expected shortfall, and show how to construct the optimal insurance business mix that maximizes the portfolio RORAC. An actual loss sample of an insurance portfolio is used for numerical illustrations.

  • In this paper, we suggest theoretical grounds on the problem of R&D portfolio with different option premiums utilizing the Real Options Model, which has received intensified attention as the method of assessment of R&D project with high risk. Even though there have been many studies focused on the evaluation of option value of single project from technology valuation's perspective. there are few study on the portfolio of multiple technology investment by option value using. This paper bears practical importance by showing simple examples with the option value of investment alternatives and the valuation of related risk, the construction of optimum portfolio in technology investment alternatives.

  • This study aimed to examine the applicability of a portfolio approach to the ecosystem-based fisheries management targeting the large purse seine fishery. Most fisheries are targeting multispecies and species are biologically and technically interacted each other. It enables a portfolio approach to be applied to find optimal production of each species through expected returns and risk analyses. Under specific assumptions on the harvest quota by species, efficient risk-return frontiers were generated and they showed a combination of optimal production level. Comparisons between portfolio and actual production provided a useful information for targeting strategy and management. Results also showed the possibility of effective multispecies fisheries management by imposing constraints on each species such as total allowable catch quotas.

  • Uncertain factors in finical markets make the prediction of future returns and risk of asset much difficult. In this paper, a model, assuming the admissible errors on expected returns and risks of assets, assisted in the multiperiod mean variance portfolio selection problem is built. The model considers transaction costs, upper bound on borrowing risk-free asset constraints, cardinality constraints and threshold constraints. Cardinality constraints limit the number of assets to be held in an efficient portfolio. At the same time, threshold constraints limit the amount of capital to be invested in each stock and prevent very small investments in any stock. Because of these limitations, the proposed model is a mix integer dynamic optimization problem with path dependence. The forward dynamic programming method is designed to obtain the optimal portfolio strategy. Finally, to evaluate the model, our result of a meaning example is compared to the terminal wealth under different constraints.

  • We use iterative numerical procedures combined with analytical methods due to Rapach and Wohar (2009) to solve for the dynamic asset allocation strategy for optimal portfolio demand. We compare different optimal portfolio demands when investors in each country have different access to overseas and domestic investment opportunities. The optimal dynamic asset allocation strategy without foreign investment opportunities leads domestic investors in Korea, Hong Kong, and Singapore to allocate more funds to domestic bonds than to domestic stocks. However, the U.S. investors allocate more wealth to domestic stocks than to domestic bonds. Investors in all countries short bills at a low level of risk aversion. Next, we investigate dynamic asset allocation strategy when domestic investors in Korea have access to foreign markets. The optimal portfolio demand leads investors in Korea to allocate most resources to domestic bonds and foreign stocks. On the other hand, the portfolio weights on foreign bonds and domestic stocks are relatively low. We also analyze dynamic asset allocation strategy for the investors in the U.S., Hong Kong, and Singapore when they have access to the Korean markets as overseas investment opportunities. Compared to the results when the investors only have access to domestic markets, the investors in the U.S. and Singapore increase the portfolio weights on domestic stocks in spite of the overseas investment opportunities in the Korean markets. The investors in the U.S., Hong Kong, and Singapore short domestic bills to invest more than initial funds in risky assets with a varying degree of relative risk aversion coefficients without exception.
