  • Today's individual firms no longer compete as solely autonomous entities, but rather as supply chain. As such the competitive position of a port is not only determined by its internal strengths but also it is also affected by its links in a global supply chin. In other words, port competitiveness is becoming increasingly dependent on external coordination and control of the whole supply chain. The main purpose of this paper is to examine how a port embeds itself into supply chain in order to strengthen its competitive position by focusing on Dubai port case. This paper found that Dubai port used three phases-insertion, integration and dominance-as a strategies for how it can embedded into global supply chain successfully. Dubai's global supply chain strategies give some implications for the further development of the Port of Gwangyang. First, the Port of Gwangyang should fully utilize symbiotic relationship with Gwangyang free Economic Zone. Second, the integration between Korea Container Terminal Authority and GYFEZ can be recommended for fast decision-making and providing a one-stop-service. Finally, Gwangyang should pursue an aggressive supply chain strategy, aims at dominance in the regional port network through port alliance with small and medium ports in neighboring area.

  • Introduction of wave model, considered the effect of shoaling, refraction, diffraction, partial reflection, bottom friction, breaking at the coastal waters of complex bathymetry, is a very important factor for most coastal engineering design and disaster prevention problems. As waves move from deeper waters to shallow coastal waters, the fundamental wave parameters will change and the wave energy is redistributed along wave crests due to the depth variation, the presence of islands, coastal protection structures, irregularities of the enclosing shore boundaries, and other geological features. Moreover, waves undergo severe change inside the surf zone where wave breaking occurs and in the regions where reflected waves from coastline and structural boundaries interact with the incident waves. Therefore, the application of mild-slope equation model in this field would help for understanding of wave transformation mechanism where many other models could not deal with up to now. The purpose of this study is to form a extended mild-slope equation wave model and make comparison and analysis on variation of harbor responses in the vicinities of Ulsan Harbor and Ulsan New Port, etc. due to construction of New Port in Ulsan Bay. We also considered the increase of water depth at the entrance channel by dredging work up to 15 meters depth in order to see the dredging effect. Among several model analyses, the nonlinear and breaking wave conditions are showed the most applicable results. This type of trial might be a milestone for port development in macro scale, where the induced impact analysis in the existing port due to the development could be easily neglected.

  • Purpose - Port is vital for international trade accounting for approximately 80% of world cargo transportation in the global trade sector. Air pollutants emitted owing to the related industry interfaces developed around the port spread throughout the dense population region can have harmful effects on the nearby residents. This study aims to analyze high-concentration diffusion pattern by air pollutants, considering the main management periods by air pollutants. Design/methodology - Employing the concentration criteria per main air pollutant, the analyses of concentration change patterns per air pollutant, wind characteristics that directly affected the air pollutant diffusion, distribution types per air pollutant, and high-concentration diffusion patterns by season according to time changes were conducted. Findings - The substances that caused harmful levels of air pollution in the hinterland living zone of the Busan New Port were PM_10, PM_2.5, and NO_2. Furthermore, the intensive management periods were as follows: For PM_10, 24-h (spring), 12:00-16:00 (summer), 12:00-16:00 (summer), 20:00-12:00 (fall), and 24:00-20:00 (winter), and for PM_2.5, 24-h (all four seasons), and for NO_2, 23:00-04:00 (spring), 23:00-08:00 (summer), and 20:00-08:00 (fall), and 23:00-04:00 (winter). Originality/value - Research finding indicates that regular monitoring and countermeasures to reduce air pollution for each air pollutant makes it possible to achieve effective air quality control in the port and hinterland living zones.

  • In this study, the cone type baffle (CTB) was developed to improve the flow distribution in an upflow bioreactor. It was composed of two different zones (anoxic and oxic) by inserting the CTB in the middle of the bioreactor. Based on the results of the dye tracer tests, hydraulic retention time (HRT) for the anoxic, oxic and total volume of the bioreactor was found to be 0.998, 1.996 and 2.994 hr, respectively. And the theoretical HRT for each volume was 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 hr, respectively. The values of HRT obtained from the tests coincide with theoretical values. Therefore, the flow pattern for each zone inside the bioreactor, which was divided by the CTB, was dominated by complete mix flow rather than plug flow. Based on the results of the transection measurements, the DO concentration for each zone inside the bioreactor was clearly distinguished. Consequently, the CTB played an important role in the separation of anoxic and oxic zones. Also, the each pollutans were reduced gradually along the height in the oxic zone. The reason is that the biomass in the media layer (Port 4 and 5) was higher than that in the mixed liquor layer without the media (Port 2 and 3).

  • Time seres of suspended sediment concentration, surface elevation and velocity were measured and analysed to investigate the role of waves and the predominance of infra-gravity wave component for sediment suspension phenomena in the surf zone. For the investigation in detail, we adopted the cross spectral analysis method between sediment concentration and the characteristic values of wave, and ensemble average analysis method about long-period wave component, which is dominant to sediment suspension in the measurement point. The obtained results are summarized as follows: 1) The relationship between sediment concentration and the characteristic values of wave is stronger for the long-period standing wave components(about 60s and 30s) than the long wave components(about 100s), which have the most energetic power, 2) and also, it is cleared that sediment concentration is increased in the case of the phase, the velocity components of the first mode long-period standing wave(60sec) were accelerated toward on-shore direction, that is, the water surface in offshore side is higher than on-shore side.

  • Narrowband interference can severely degrade the performance of GPS receivers. Detecting the presence of interference and then characterizing it can lead to its removal. Receivers can be reconfigured to focus on other signals or satellites that are less vulnerable to that interference at that moment. Using hardware reconfigurability of FPGA receivers and characterizing the effect of narrowband interference on the GNSS signal quality lead us to a new RFI mitigation technique in which the highest quality and less vulnerable signal can be chosen at each moment. In the previous work [1], the post processing capability of a software GPS receiver, has been used to detect and characterize the CW interference. This is achieved by passing the GPS signal and the interference through the correlator. Then, using the conventional definition of C/No as the squared mean of the correlator output divided by its variance, the actual C/No for each satellite is calculated. In this work, first the 'Exclusion zone' for each satellite signal has been defined and then by using some experiments the effects of different parameters like signal power, jamming power and the environmental noise power on the Exclusion zone have been analyzed. By monitoring the Doppler frequency of each satellite and using the actual C/No of each satellite using the traditional definition of C/No and actual data from a software GPS receiver, the decision to reconfigure the receiver to other signal can be made.

  • The use of high-strength aluminum alloys for ship and offshore structure generally has many benefits compared to the structural steels. These materials are used widely in a variety of fields, especially in the hull and deck of high speed craft, box-girder of bridges, deck and side plates of offshore structure. The structural weight can be reduced using these aluminum structure, which can enable high speed The characteristics of stress-strain relationship of aluminum structure are fairly different from the steel one, because of the influence of Heat Affected Zone(HAZ) by the welding processing. The HAZ of aluminum is much wider than that of steel with its high heat conductivity. In this paper, the ultimate strength characteristics of aluminum stiffened panel subjected to axial loading, such as the relationship between extent of HAZ and the behavior of buckling/ultimate strength, are investigated through the Finite Element Analysis with varying its range.

  • Many researches and projects are implemented about u-IT according to changes of ubiquitous environments in the world. Especially, there are benefits to raise lifestyle and we can develop industry by applying ubiquitous regionally. Also it makes citizen feel comfortable directly. There are many projects to regionally adopt ubiquitous services like u-City model for getting this advantages. RFID technology must be suited to each environment because each RFID tag has different characteristics according to frequency band. We need to integrate bands of RFID to overcome limitations and provide more detail information and services. In this study, we develop the dual band RFID Manager needed adopting u-Zone service for both 13.56MHz and 2.45GHz. The RFID Manager, application software for base station of u-Zone, delivers the information from readers to integrated u-Zone server system.

  • This study aims to establish safety zones for bunkering operations of hydrogen propulsion ships in coastal areas through risk assessment and evaluate their validity. Using a 350 kW-class ferry operating in Busan Port as the subject of analysis, with quantitative risk assessment based on accident consequence and frequency analysis, along with a social risk assessment considering population density. The results of the risk assessment indicate that all scenarios were within acceptable risk criteria and ALARP region. The most critical accident scenarios involve complete hose rupture during bunkering, resulting in jet flames (Frequency: 2.76E-06, Fatalities: 9.81) and vapor cloud explosions (Frequency: 1.33E-08, Fatalities: 14.24). For the recommended safety zone criteria in the 6% hose cross-sectional area leakage scenario, It could be appropriate criteria considering overall risk level and safety zones criteria for hydrogen vehicle refueling stations. This research contributes to establishing safety zone for bunkering operations of hydrogen propulsion ships through risk assessment and provides valuable technical guidelines.
