As the competition in the liner shipping industry is becoming fiercer, the shipping company is trying to find the way to keep the best competitive position by reducing the cost level as low as possible and offering the best quality of service to their customer. In order to achieve this goal, the selection of port and terminal that have the best quality of service and cost effective structure is essential for the shipping line, where they can only have a chance to save the money. In this context, the paper compares three European container terminals in order to understand the factors that have to be considered in the decision making process for the selection of terminal. And its advantages and disadvantages of each type of container terminal operation system were analyzed from the liner shipping company's point of view in terms of cost, time, flexibility, stability, hinterland connection, geographical position and terminal productivity. It is obvious that the cost factors are very important for liner shipping company to select their terminal. However, there might be even more important factors than the cost factors, such as quality of port and terminal service, mutual trust, and possibility of future development.

The world of container shipping and container terminal business is changing and container ports need to know what the changes are in order to plan how to respond. In particular, the container transport industry has noticed two major developments such as globalization and consolidation. The purpose of this paper is to review the current trend towards globalization and consolidation of container liner shipping and container terminal business. It also investigates the impact of these market developments on container ports and presents its implications for port development, management and operation, and port competition policy. According to the discussion of this paper a greater exercise of market power of container terminal operators will have negative impacts on international trade and national economy, especially port users, including container lines, exporters and importers. An empirical evidence on the exercise of market power is required to develop competition rules on market dominance at a national and international level. This paper suggests 'port coopetition' as a solution for smaller and regional container terminal operators to survive in a competitive business environment.

컨테이너터미널 운영에서 안벽영역의 장비와 기술이 발전함에 따라 항만운영의 정체가 장치장으로 이전되었다. 따라서 장치장 관리가 터미널 운영 전반에 미치는 영향이 매우 커졌다. 이에 따라 컨테이너터미널 장치장 운영의 최적화를 위한 연구가 많이 수행되었으나 장래 장치장 점유율 변화 자체를 추정한 연구는 없는 실정이다. 본 연구는 부산항 신항을 대상으로 시간의 경과에 따른 확률의 변화를 설명하는 마코프 체인을 적용하여 부산항 신항 컨테이너 터미널의 장치장 점유율 수준에 대한 확률을 분석하였다. 분석결과 부산항 신항의 장치장 점유율은 향후에도 높은 수준을 유지할 확률이 큰 것으로 나타났다.

현재 부산항은 위기에 처해 있다. 외부적으로는 세계적인 경제불황으로 전반적인 물동량 감소도 있지만, 신항개장 이래로 북항과 신항 간의 물동량 유치를 위한 출혈경쟁으로 터미널 채산성이 악화되고 부산항 이미지가 크게 손상되고 있다는 점이다. 이는 근본적으로 부산북항이 하역사위주의 운영사로 난립되어 있기 때문이다. 이에 따라, 본 연구에서는 부산항의 문제점을 해결할 수 있는 북항터미널의 통합유인요인이 실질적으로 부산항의 경쟁력제고에 얼마나 영향을 미치는 지를 실증분석하였다. 실증분석결과에 의하면, 북항터미널 운영사를 통합하여 글로벌 터미널 하여야만 선사서비스능력, 항만생산성을 제고시켜 긍극적으로 물동량 증대와 동북아허브항만화에 기여할 것으로 나타나고 있어 부산항 경쟁력제고를 위해 부산북항 터미널의 통합이 정책적으로 시급함을 보여주고 있다.

The main purpose of this study is to design the port marketing strategies for strengthening the competitive power of container terminal. So far many attempts have been made to analyze the international competitiveness of the terminal. Six factors hypothesized by this study come from previous research analyses about customers preference for port selection. Those are Cost Centrality and Intermediacy Free trade port Inland transportation connections Political and Economic institution and Port facilities. this study analyzes the most important factors about hob port and transhipment port separately through questionnaire analysis about users(shipper shipping company and freight forwarder) influencing on port selection. 항만간 허브항 경쟁이 극심해 지고 있는 오늘날, 컨테이너 선사는 M&A 및 전략적 제휴로 컨테이너터미널 운영사와의 가격 협상력의 우월적 지위를 갖게 되어 컨테이너터미널 운영사간에 선사 및 화물유치를 위한 경쟁을 더욱 부추기고 있다. 그러나 수요측면에서 컨테이너물동량 증가율 둔화로 컨테이너터미널에서 처리해야 할 물동량은 한정되어 있는 반면, 공급 측면에서 항만터미널의 지속적인 건설은 항만간 또는 터미널간 물량 유치경쟁을 과열시키고 있다. 특히 부산항은 신항 개장이후 북항과 신항간 물동량 유치경쟁으로 인하여 항만하역시장의 교란을 가져오고 있다. 본 연구에서는 부산항 컨테이너 항만하역시장의 구조적 특성분석과 설문조사 방법론을 통하여 향후 부산항 항만 하역시장의 안정화 방안을 제시하고자 한다. 하역시장 안정화 방안으로 항만하역 요율결정체계 개선, 요금신고제도의 개선 및 공정경쟁규약의 제정 등과 같은 법 제도적 개선방안과 컨테이너터미널 운영사별 처리물량 상한제를 도입을 전제로한 항만풀링제도 및 물량연동 임대료제도의 도입방안을 제안한다.

This study is to find subjects for the Automated Container Terminal(ACT) development and container terminal system. Also we analyze the present condition of the container terminal system in Pusan port and its automation level by systems approach. And this paper aims at evaluating on the priority of R&D investment until the beginning of the second stage of New Pusan Port Project(2006). In this process we have considered 8 evaluation indexes(cost, labor, area, time, volume, reliability. safety, convenience) to analyze 6 subsystems. The priority of R&D until target year by sub-systems is as follow: 1. Cargo Handing System, 2. Transfer System, 3. Port Entry System, 4. Storage System (Distribution & Manufacturing System included), 5.Inland Transport System, 6.Port Management & Information System.

The analytical hierarchy process (AHP) enables decision makers to represent the interaction of multiple factors in complex and unstructured situations. The process requires the decision maker to develop a hierarchical structure of the factors in the given problem and to provide judgments about the relative importance of each of these factors and ultimately to specify a preference for each decision alternative with respect to each factor. The research presented in this paper applies the AHP to identify key players in promoting port competitiveness. The literature survey revealed four major criteria and 15 sub-criteria. The four factors are cost, service quality, facility/capacity and economic-social variable. 150 questionnaires suitable for AHP analysis were made and 77 were returned. It is found that in terms of cost, the first key player is terminal operator and the second key player is shipping companies calling Busan port; in terms of service quality, the first key player is terminal operator, and the second key player is shipping companies calling Busan port; in terms of facility/capacity, the first key player is port authority and the second key player is terminal operator; in terms of economic-social variable, the first key player is terminal operator, and the second key player is shipping companies calling Busan port.

Increasing port competition driven by the containerisation has motivated ports and terminals to focus on their performance to efficiently utilise the available resources and to make strategic decisions in port development and expansion. With both inter-port andintra-port competition increasing in the port of Colombo, this study aims to measure the efficiency of the container terminals in Colombo comparing to terminals in the port of Busan using the DEA window analysis to determine their operational efficiency and to provide suggestions for future port development activities. Multiple window analyses were conducted using CCR and BCC models with different orientations and window lengths to compare the efficiencies of 11 DMUs in both ports during the period from 2015-2019 to measure the efficiencies prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. Results revealed the largest terminal operator, PNC in Busan, to be the most efficient overall, while the second highest efficiency was recorded by one of the smallest terminal operators, SAGT in Colombo, among the sample. Although use of DEA in port performance measurement has been popular for many years, efficiency measurements in the port of Colombo, the main hub port in the South Asian region, has not been comprehensively studied so far.
