  • The purpose of this study is to examine the algorithm of ship collision avoidance system and to improve its performance. The study on the algorithm of ship collision avoidance system have been carried out by many researchers. We can divide the study according to the adopted theory into two category such as 'collision risk calculation method' and 'risk area method'. It is not so difficult to find heir merit and demerit in the respective method. This study suggested newly modified model, which can overcome a limit in the two method. The suggested model is based on collision risk calculation method and suggests how to solve the threshold value problem, that is, one of the unsolved issues in collision risk calculation method. To solve that problem this study proposed new system under which the users can select appropriate threshold value according to environments such as traffic situations and weathers conditions. Simulation results of new model is schematized using 'risk area method'to examine the relationships between the two method. In addition, in case of 'collision risk method', when TCPA and DCPA are used to determine collision risk, a problem happens, that is, two ships become too close in their stem area, therefore, partial function of 'risk area method'is adopted to solve the problem in suggested model.

  • In accordance with the development plans of Jeju for international free city, Jeju new harbor will be constructed cosidering supporting Jeju city as an international tour city, safe arrival and departure at the terminal of 80.000G/T cruise ship. In this study, we used a full-mission ship handling simulator adopting 80.000G/T cruise ship manoeuvered at the planned Juju international cruise terminal. Five masters who have had a long experience of shop maneuvering ware called to carry out the simulations of which No. 1 , Np. 2, and No.4 scenario of simulation were tried twice, completed the total of 10 times and No.3 scenario of simulation once, reached at the total of 5 time. The marine traffic safety was assessed in terms of 1) the closest point of approach(CPA) to breakwater and quay in the vicinty and the probability of crossing fairway limit, 2)subjective evaluation such as the mental burden and the maneuvering disfficulty of shiphanders and 3) the opinions of shiphandlers. From th result of this simulation, we have a conclusion that the 80.000G/T cruise ship can be maneuvered safely at the planned terminal.

  • AtoN Accident causes navigation dangerous to ships and reduces the credibility of aids to navigation. The most light buoys on the sea have the highest accident rate from the influence of sea weather such as wind, current, and waves. However, in Korea, despite the different sea weather conditions in each sea area, in calculating the dynamic stability of the light buoy, there is a problem that only limit value conditions are applied to all sea areas. Thus, the purpose of this study was to analyze the dynamic stability of the LL-26(M) light buoy, the most installed buoy of its kind on the sea and suggest a stable operation plan for the LL-26(M) light buoy. To achieve this, after analyzing the weather for each sea area of the previous study related to the light buoy, the dynamic stability (inclination angle) was estimated by applying to the representative light buoys of each sea area wherein the number of accidents caused by sea weather was high. As a result of this study, the inclination angle of LL-26(M) light buoy for each sea area was different. That is, the inclination angle caused by winds was 10.329°-36.868°, the inclination angle caused by currents was 0.123°-18.834° and the inclination angle caused by waves was 4.777°-20.695°. The results of study can be used as basic data useful for installation standards for each sea area for stable operation of the LL-26(M) light buoy.

  • To limit greenhouse gas emissions from ships, numerous environmental regulations and standards have been taken into effect. As a result, alternative fuels such as liquefied natural gas (LNG), liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), ammonia, and biofuels have been applied to ships. Most of these alternative fuels are low flashpoint fuels in the form of liquefied gas. Their use is predicted to continue to increase. Thus, management regulations for using low flash point fuel as a ship fuel are required. However, they are currently insufficient. In the case of LNG, ISO standards have been prepared in relation to bunkering. The Society for Gas as a Marine Fuel (SGMF), a non-governmental organization (NGO), has also prepared and published a guideline on LNG bunkering. The classification society also requires safety management areas to be designated according to bunkering methods and procedures for safe bunkering. Therefore, it is necessary to establish a procedure for setting a safety management area according to the type of fuel, environmental conditions, and leakage scenarios and verify it with a numerical method. In this study, as a feasibility study for establishing these procedures, application status and standards of the industry were reviewed. Classification guidelines and existing preceding studies were analyzed and investigated. Based on results of this study, a procedure for establishing a safety management area for bunkering in domestic ports of Korea can be prepared.

  • The shipping industry plummeted and was depressed due to the global economic crisis caused by the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers in the US in 2008. In 2020, the shipping market also suffered from a collapse in the unstable global economic situation due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but unexpectedly, it changed to an upward trend from the end of 2020, and in 2021, it exceeded the market of the boom period of 2008. According to the Clarksons report published in May 2021, the decrease in cargo volume due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 has returned to the pre-corona level by the end of 2020, and the tramper bulk carrier capacity of 103~104% of the Panamax has been in the ports due to congestion. Earnings across the bulker segments have risen to ten-year highs in recent months. In this study, as factors affecting BDI, the capacity and congestion ratio of Cape and Panamax ships on the supply side, iron ore and coal seaborne tonnge on the demand side and Granger causality test, IRF(Impulse Response Function) and FEVD(Forecast Error Variance Decomposition) were performed using VAR model to analyze the impact on BDI by congestion caused by strengthen quarantine at the port due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the loading and discharging operation delay due to the infection of the stevedore, etc and to predict the shipping market after the pandemic. As a result of the Granger causality test of variables and BDI using time series data from January 2016 to July 2021, causality was found in the Fleet and Congestion variables, and as a result of the Impulse Response Function, Congestion variable was found to have significant at both upper and lower limit of the confidence interval. As a result of the Forecast Error Variance Decomposition, Congestion variable showed an explanatory power upto 25% for the change in BDI. If the congestion in ports decreases after With Corona, it is expected that there is down-risk in the shipping market. The COVID-19 pandemic occurred not from economic factors but from an ecological factor by the pandemic is different from the past economic crisis. It is necessary to analyze from a different point of view than the past economic crisis. This study has meaningful to analyze the causality and explanatory power of Congestion factor by pandemic.

  • A dynamic flow system has been developed which can be used for vacuum gauge calibration by comparison method - a calibration method in which the reading of the gauge under calibration is compared to another calibrated vacuum gauge called the "secondary standard" - and other vacuum-related experiments. The chamber of the calibration system is pumped by a turbomolecular pump (TMP), backed by a scroll pump. As maximum acceptable pressure at the inlet of a TMP is 0.1 Pa, above which the TMP decelerates, the pumping speed decreases and it becomes more difficult to adjust pressure under such circumstances. In the present work, high pressures of up to 133 Pa have been generated in the chamber of the newly developed dynamic flow control system by installing a well-designed conductance-reducer in the by-pass line and, at the same time, operating the TMP in safe mode. In addition, the gas flow and pressure distribution within the chamber have been investigated for the entire pressure range (0.1 Pa ~ 133 Pa) while generating pressure dynamically. Maximum deviations in pressure (1.6 %) were observed at point C on the chamber, which is close to the gas inlet port on the top of the chamber.

  • This paper presents the development of the 2-mode variable gain high power amplifier for a transmitter of INMARSAT-M operating at L-band(1626.5-1646.5 MHz). This SSPA(Solid State Power Amplifier) is amplified 42 dBm in high power mode and 36 dBm in low power mode for INMARSAT-M. The allowable error sets +1 dBm of an upper limit and -2 dBm of a lower limit, respectively. To simplify the fabrication process, the whole system is designed by two parts composed of a driving amplifier and a high power amplifier, The HP's MGA-64135 and Motorola's MRF-6401 are used for driving amplifier, and the ERICSSON's PTE-10114 and PTF-10021 are used the high power amplifier. The SSPA was fabricated by the circuits of RF, temperature compensation and 2-mode gain control circuit in aluminum housing. The gain control method was proposed by controlling the voltage for the 2-mode. In addition, It has been experimentally verified that the gain is controlled for single tone signal as well as two tone signals. The realized SSPA has 42 dB and 36 dB for small signal gain within 20 MHz bandwidth, and the VSWR of input and output port is less than 1.5:1 The minimum value of the 1 dB compression point gets 5 dBm for 2-mode variable gain high power amplifier. A typical two tone intermodulation point has 32.5 dBc maximum which is single carrier backed off 3 dB from 1 dB compression point. The maximum output power of 43 dBm was achieved at the 1636.5 MHz. These results reveal a high power of 20 Watt, which was the design target.the design target.

  • The Incheon Bridge, which was opened to the traffic in October 2009, is an 18.4 km long sea-crossing bridge connecting the Incheon International Airport with the expressway networks around the Seoul metropolitan area by way of Songdo District of Incheon City. This bridge is an integration of several special featured bridges and the major part of the bridge consists of cable-stayed spans. This marine cable-stayed bridge has a main span of 800 m wide to cross the vessel navigation channel in and out of the Incheon Port. In waterways where ship collision is anticipated, bridges shall be designed to resist ship impact forces, and/or, adequately protected by ship impact protection (SIP) systems. For the Incheon Bridge, large diameter circular dolphins as SIP were made at 44 locations of the both side of the main span around the piers of the cable-stayed bridge span. This world's largest dolphin-type SIP system protects the bridge against the collision with 100,000 DWT tanker navigating the channel with speed of 10 knots. Diameter of the dolphin is up to 25 m. Vessel collision risk was assessed by probability based analysis with AASHTO Method-II. The annual frequency of bridge collapse through the risk analysis for 71,370 cases of the impact scenario was less than $0.5{\times}10^{-4}$ and satisfies design requirements. The dolphin is the circular sheet pile structure filled with crushed rock and closed at the top with a robust concrete cap. The structural design was performed with numerical analyses of which constitutional model was verified by the physical model experiment using the geo-centrifugal testing equipment. 3D non-linear finite element models were used to analyze the structural response and energy-dissipating capability of dolphins which were deeply embedded in the seabed. The dolphin structure secures external stability and internal stability for ordinary loads such as wave and current pressure. Considering failure mechanism, stability assessment was performed for the strength limit state and service limit state of the dolphins. The friction angle of the crushed stone as a filling material was reduced to $38^{\circ}$ considering the possibility of contracting behavior as the impact.

  • Leaks at the piston seal and the by-pass port of a small volume prover have relatively large influence on the proving accuracy in comparison with a conventional ball prover. The pulse interpolator, which is to increase the discrimination, is affected by the characteristic of the flowmeter signal. In this study, a small volume prover of the double cylinder type was designed in order to study the pulse interpolation error as well as the leak error. The basic volume of the prover determined by a water draw method was about 9.68L. Experimental results revealed that interpolation data attained by the repeated piston pass for turbine meters at a fixed flowrate may be treated effectively by applying a statistical method. It was possible to limit the pulse interpolation error less than .+-. 0.02% at the 95% confidence level. However, in the case of the bulk meter, if failed to achieve the required repeatability level because of the pulse characteristics. The basic volume change appeared to be independent of the piston velocity within the .+-. 0.05% of tolerance.

  • A new type of circularly polarized(CP) antenna that is characterized by having both low-profile and greater axial-ratio bandwidth(ARBW) beyond existing antennas is introduced through analysis of artificial magnetic conductor(AMC) polarizer, and experimentally demonstrated. Although it is made use of a linear-polarized dipole antenna with close proximity to ground plane, it is backed by AMC polarizer so as to efficiently radiate with circularly changed polarization whose ARBW is determined by the texture geometry, whereas existing antennas exhibit CP surface-current on radiators, which limit ARBW. The mechanism of the polarization conversion is theoretically analyzed for ARBW, and the experimental properties including the impedance matching, CP radiation pattern, axial-ratio pattern, ARBW, and two-port isolation are discussed.
