Thermal insulation material was prepared by cross-linking chemical reaction of silica aerogel and epoxy resin, which has a high porous and vacant properties. The structural, mechanical, and thermal properties were analyzed in order to verify its application for industrial and electrical applications. The thermal conductivities were changed from 115 mW/mK to 75 mW/mK by reducing the contents of nano-porous silica areogel powders. The compressive loading is also decreased by increasing the contents of silica aerogels by 20 wt% in aerogel/epoxy composites. It is concluded that the formulated composite materials can be applied to building materials, electronics parts, and heavy industries.
In order to fabricate porous materials having an anisotropic thermal conductivity by aligning plate-shaped pores structure, alumina powder (AM-21, mean particle size $4\mum$) and flake crystalline graphite was used. The aligned pore structure was realized using multi-pressing process. Degree of pore orientation increased with the number of pressing and thermal conductivity, parallel to the pressing direction, decreased with the number of pressing. Thermal conductivity decreased significantly to the addition of 30vol% crystalline graphite, however, in the case of 60vol%, thermal conductivity did not decrease significantly due to the breakage of crystalline graphite. An anisotropy of the thermal conductivity increased with the content of crystalline graphite up to 30vol%. Graded pore structure was fabricated by controlling the content and size of crystalline graphite, which provides, possibly, the enhancement in mechanical strength and thermal insulation properties of the insulating bricks.
Energy efficiency solutions are being pursued as a sustainable approach to reducing energy consumption and related gas emissions across various sectors of the economy. Vacuum Insulation Panel (VIP) is an energy efficient advanced insulation system that facilitates slim but high-performance insulation, based on a porous core material evacuated and encapsulated in a barrier envelope. Although VIP has been applied in buildings for over a decade, it wasn't until recently that efforts have been initiated to propose and adopt a global standard on characterization and testing of VIP. One of the issues regarding VIP is its durability and aging due to pressure and moisture dependent increase of the initial low thermal conductivity with time; more so in building applications. In this paper, the aging of commercially available VIP was investigated experimentally; thermal conductivity was tested in accordance with ISO 8302 standard (guarded hot box method) and long-term durability was estimated based on a non-linear pressure-humidity dependent equation based on study of IEA/ECBCS Annex 39, with the aim of assessing durability of VIP for use in buildings. The center-of-panel thermal conductivity after 25 years based on initial 90% fractile with a confidence level of 90 % for the thermal conductivity (${\lambda}90/90$) ranged from 0.00726-0.00814 (W/m K) for silica core VIP. Significant differences between manufacturer-provided data and measurements of thermal conductivity and internal pressure were observed.
One of the most feasible solution for reducing the excessive energy consumption and carbon dioxide emission is usage of more efficient fuel such as hydrogen. As is well known, there are three viable technologies for storing hydrogen fuel: compressed gas, metal hydride absorption, and cryogenic liquid. In these technologies, the storage for liquid hydrogen has better energy density by weight than other storage methods. However, the cryogenic liquid storage has a significant disadvantage of boiling losses. That is, high performance of thermal insulation systems must be studied for reducing the boiling losses. This paper presents an experimental study on the effective thermal conductivities of the composite layered insulation with aerogel blankets($Cryogel^{(R)}$ Z and $Pyrogel^{(R)}$ XT-E) and Multi-layer insulation(MLI). The aerogel blankets are known as high porous materials and the good insulators within a soft vacuum range($10^{-3}{\sim}1$ Torr). Also, MLI is known as the best insulator within a high vacuum range(<$10^{-6}{\sim}10^{-3}$ Torr). A vertical axial cryogenic experimental apparatus was designed to investigate the thermal performance of the composite layered insulators under cryogenic conditions as well as consist of a cold mass tank, a heat absorber, annular vacuum space, and an insulators space. The composite insulators were laminated in the insulator space that height was 50 mm. In this study, the effective thermal conductivities of the materials were evaluated by measuring boil-off rate of liquid nitrogen and liquid argon in the cold mass tank.
Currently, the most commonly used EPS insulation material has been mainly used because its ease of adhesion with concrete. However, due to poor adhesion with wallpaper, separate adhesion needs to be strengthened and there are cases of breakage or grooves in the process of dismantling the mold. The biggest problem is that when a fire breaks out, various harmful substances are present and highly flammable. Cork used in this study is a truly eco-friendly building material that is taken from between the outer and inner bark of cork trees and does not damage the wood. Also, it is a porous material that is made up of countless cells and contains an air gap between the cells. It is very light in weight between 0.06 and 0.07 and has excellent insulation with a heat conductivity of 0.04W/mK. In addition, it has high stability in the topic of conversation because it does not produce harmful gas when burned and has self-sustaining properties. However, research on cork, an eco-friendly building material with excellent performance to date, is scarce Therefore, we encourage existing scholars to raise interest in new eco-friendly building materials through this study. It also aims to manufacture insulation boards with new inorganic properties using the low weight and heat conductivity held by the cork.

Recently, regulations pertaining to the noise and vibration environment of offshore plants have been strengthened. For example, the NORSOK standards have been applied, which are very strict regulations that are comparable to those applied to passenger ships. Furthermore, the use of porous materials, such as those used in most of the current insulating panels, has been forbidden. Therefore, honeycomb-backed Micro-Perforated Plates (MPPs) are now regarded as next-generation absorber materials. This paper reports the results of parametric studies that were performed using numerical methods to determine the effect of the thickness on the performance of a honeycomb panel and the effect of the perforation ratio on the MPP performance. The numerical results were verified through experiments. Finally, we propose a combined honeycomb/MPP panel where the MPP is placed between upper and lower honeycomb panels and one end surface is also replaced with an MPP.
Floor impact sound has been most annoying for years among the noises which are produced in apartment. This study aims to analyze the improvement of floor impact sound by comparing the results of the test which was carried out for the wall slab type apartment and moment frame apartment, and also for the effect of advanced vibration isolation layer. Moment frame structure that main structure consists of column and slab has shown better performance for the heavyweight impact sound comparing with wall slab type structure which is general type in Korea. Stiffness of floor system was raised by reinforcing the stiffness of vibration isolation layer, and it was analyzed how much the floor impact sound performance was improved. The result showed that the reinforced floor had better performance than the existing floor system that uses lightweight porous concrete as vibration isolation material. In addition, a system used wire mesh in mortar showed improvement of floor impact sound than a system without wire mesh, and better performance for the frequency bands lower than 160 Hz which causes floor impact problem in wall slab type apartment.
In order to improve the high temperature oxidation resistance and lifespan of mat type porous carbon insulation, SiC was coated on carbon insulation by solution coating using polycarbosilane solution, curing in an oxidizing atmosphere at $200^{\circ}C$, and pyrolysis at temperatures up to $1200^{\circ}C$. The SiOC phase formed during the pyrolysis process was converted into SiC crystals as the heat treatment temperature increased, and a SiC coating with a thickness of 10-15 nm was formed at $1600^{\circ}C$. The SiC coated specimen showed a weight reduction of 8.6 % when it was kept in an atmospheric environment of $700^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour. On the other hand, the thermal conductivity was 0.17 W/mK, and no difference between states before and after coating was observed at all.
