Green bodies of earthenware tile were prepared from a mixture of earthenware tile powder and SiC as forming agents by applying a conventional process. Granule powder for tile samples was prepared using the spray drying method with commercial earthenware raw material with a quantity of SiC of 0.3 wt%. The applied pressure was $250kg{\cdot}f/m^2$ and the firing temperature was $1050-1200^{\circ}C$. The effects of the SiC particle size and sintering temperature on the open porosity and total porosity were investigated and the correlative mechanism was also discussed. While total porosity was not significantly changed by decreasing the SiC particle size, the open porosity showed a gradual decrease, which represents an increase of the closed porosity. As the sintering temperature increased, coarsening was made among the pores due to excessive oxidation. The volume shrinkage and bending strength were demonstrated for the sintered tile samples. The sintered bulk density was also measured to determine the weight reduction value.

Three-layer porous alumina-mullite composites with a symmetric gradient porosity are prepared using a controlled freeze/gel-casting method. In this work, tertiary-butyl alcohol (TBA) and coal fly ash with an appropriate addition of $Al_2O_3$ were used as the freezing vehicle and the starting material, respectively. When sintered at $1300-1500^{\circ}C$, unidirectional macro-pore channels aligned regularly along the growth direction of solid TBA were developed. Simultaneously, the pore channels were surrounded by less porous structured walls. A high degree of solid loading resulted in low porosity and a small pore size, leading to higher compressive strength. The sintered porous layered composite exhibited improved compressive strength with a slight decrease in its porosity. After sintering at $1500^{\circ}C$, the layered composite consisting of outer layers with a 50 wt% solid loading showed the highest compressive strength ($90.8{\pm}3.7MPa$) with porosity of approximately 26.4%.
The present study numerically investigated the deformation of the interface of two-phase fluids flow in a blast furnace. To simulate three-dimensional(3D) incompressible viscous two-phase flow in the furnace filled with the air and molten iron, the volume of fluid(VOF) method based on the finite volume method has been utilized. In addition, the porous medium with the porosity has been considered as the bed of the particles such as cokes and char etc. For the comparison, the single phase flow and the two-phase flow without the porosity have been simulated. The two-phase flow without porosity condition revealed the smooth parabolic profile of the free surface near the outlet. However, the free surface under the porosity condition formed the viscous finger when the free surface was close to the outlet. This viscous finger accelerated the velocity of the free surface falling and the outflow velocity of the fluids near the outlet.
Porous self-bonded silicon carbide (SBSC) ceramics were fabricated at temperatures ranging from 1700 to $1850^{\circ}C$ using SiC, silicon (Si), and three different carbon (C) sources, including carbon black, phenol resin, and xylene. The effects of the Si:C ratio and carbon source on porosity and strength were investigated as a function of sintering temperature. Porous SBSC ceramics fabricated from phenol resin showed higher porosity than the others. In contrast, porous SBSC ceramics fabricated from carbon black showed better strength than the others. Regardless of the carbon source, the porosity increased with decreasing the Si:C ratio whereas the strength increased with increasing the Si:C ratio.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the titanium castability (internal porosity) between pressure type casting machine & centrifugal casting machine with air-vent or not. Internal porosity is a well-known problem in dental titanium casting, resulting in inferior mechanical properties of dental restorations. To evaluate the castability, the square plate was chosen. 40 plate patterns($20{\times}20{\times}1.8mm$)were attached to funnel-shaped sprue. Then 20 plate patterns were attached air-vent. They were invested in titanium investment material and cast in a pressure type casting machine(20castings) and centrifugal casting machine(20castings). Each group were divided with air-vent(10castings) or not(10castings). The titanium castings were evaluated by radiographic photograph for the location of the internal porosities. The percentage porosity of each specimen was determined using standardized digital radiographs. The results were analyzed with analysis of variance and t-test for paired comparison between two groups.
In this paper, a new higher order shear deformation model is developed for static analysis of functionally graded beams with considering porosities that may possibly occur inside the functionally graded materials (FGMs) during their fabrication. The model account for higher-order variation of transverse shear strain through the depth of the beam and satisfies the zero traction boundary conditions on the surfaces of the beam without using shear correction factors. The present work aims to study the effect of the distribution forms of porosity on the bending of simply supported FG beam. Based on the present higher-order shear deformation model, the equations of motion are derived by the principle of virtual works. Navier type solution method was used to obtain displacement and stresses, and the numerical results are compared with those available in the literature. A comprehensive parametric study is carried out to assess the effects of volume fraction index, porosity fraction index, and geometry on the bending of imperfect FG beams. It can be concluded that the proposed model is simple and precise for the resolution of the behavior of flexural FGM beams while taking into account the shape of distribution of the porosity.
The effect of different porosity of onggis, Korean earthenware, on the fermentation of kochujang was investigated. The porosity was controlled with glazing treatment. Three kinds of onggis were made: one with no glazing treatment, one with outside glazing treatment, and one with both inside and outside glazing treatment. During 4 month fermentation of kochujang in porosity-controlled earthenwares, physical, chemical, microbiological, and sensory quality attributes were monitored. Higher protease activity and higher contents of amino nitrogen, free amino acids, and total neucleotide were observed in kochujang fermented in the onggi with outside glazing treatment, which might have resulted in better sensory quality. Onggi with medium porosity could be effective for fermentation of kochujang.

As a primary step in studying the effects of the netting porosity on the net-shape in the four-seam trawling net, a series of experiments were performed changing the porosity of each panel, with the simplified mo:iel of the bag net made of porous vinyl film and that ma:ie of net webbing. These models were suspended horizontally in circularly flowing water, with two pairs of susp~nding threais to four points of symetry at the border of the bag mouth in place of both wing nets. And then, the section shape of the bag mouth photographed and the tensions on both pairs of suspending threads were measured with two load cells in circularly flowing water. From the results, the auther estimated an experimental equation from the relationship between the porosity of each panel in the bag net and the section shape of the bag mouth, h/w=k (l-Pr_u/lPr_s)
The purpose of this study was to determine whether there was any difference in the mean porosity of denture base resin cured by microwave energy, when the liquid monomers of denture resin(K-33 : methyl methacrylate for conventional water bath curing or Acron MC : special monomer for microwave curing) and/or the thicknesses of denture base($5{\times}10{\times}60mm\;or\;10{\times}10{\times}60mm$) were varied. The mean porosities of k-33 specimens cured in water bath with two different thicknesses were used as control. The results were as follows : 1. Regardless of specimen thickness, Acron MC cured by microwave energy showed the least mean porosity, followed by K-33 cured by water bath heat, and K-33 cured by microwave energy showed the highest level of mean porosity(P<0.05). 2. In both K-33 and Acron MC cured by microwave energy the mean porosities of 5mm thickness groups were lower than those of 10mm thickness groups(P<0.05). But no significant difference was found in mean porosity between 5mm thickness and 10mm thickness of water bath heat cured groups made of K-33(P>0.05).
Purpose: This study was performed to investigate mechanical properties of the porous Ti implants according to porosity. Porous Ti implant will be had properties similar to human bone such as microstructure and mechanical properties. Methods: Porous Ti implant samples were fabricated by sintering of spherical Ti powders(below $25{\mu}m$, $25{\sim}32{\mu}m$, $32{\sim}38{\mu}m$, and $38{\sim}45{\mu}m$) in a high vacuum furnace. Specimen's diameter and height were 4mm and 40 mm. Surface and sectional images of porous Ti implants were evaluated by scanning electron microscope(SEM). Porosity and average pore size were evaluated by mercury porosimeter. Young's modulus and tensile strength were evaluated by universal testing machine(UTM). Results: Porosity of Implant was increased according to larger particle size of the powder. Boundary portions of particles are sintered fully and others portions were formed pore. Young's modulus was decreased by formed porous structure. Tensile strength was decreased according to larger the particle size of the powder, but higher than human bone. Conclusion: If prepared by adjust the porosity of the porous Ti implant will be able to resolve the stress shielding phenomenon.
