  • The best way to understand paper properties is to study paper structure. Paper is composed solid materials (pulp and other additives) and air three-dimensionally, it's important to understand pore structure of the paper. There are several method to analysis pore structure of the paper. Mercury intrusion technique is frequently used for the characterization of the porous paper, giving access to parameters such as pore size and pore distribution. But some researchers indicated mercury intrusion distorts the structure due to application of high pressure. So this paper suggest new analysis technique to pore structure of the paper. New pore analysis technique with SEM does not require high pressure, gives good resolution and measures pore structure.

  • Paper is a composite consisted of various solid materials including pulp, filler and other additives. The pore is also one of components consisting the paper structure. Thus the characterization of pore structure of paper is very helpful in the understanding the structural properties of paper. Mercury intrusion technique is frequently used for the characterization of the porous paper, giving access to parameters such as pore size and pore distribution. But some researchers pointed out the problem that the distortion of the pore structure can be occurred by the application of high pressure during mercury intrusion. Thus in this study, we tried to evaluate the potential of SEM and image analysis method as means for analyzing pore structure of the paper. The new pore analysis technique with SEM and image analysis does not require the application of high pressure, and gave better relation between the measured pore characteristics and the bulk of sheet than mercury intrusion method.

  • In this study, the pore structure of Portland cement paste is experimentally characterized by MIP (mercury intrusion porosimetry) and nitrogen adsorption, and simulated by a newly developed status-oriented computer model. Cement pastes with w/c=0.3, 0.4 and 0.5 at ages from 1 day to 120 days are comprehensively investigated. It is found that MIP cannot generate valid pore size distribution curves for cement paste. Nevertheless, nitrogen adsorption can give much more realistic pore size distribution curves of small capillary pores, and these curves follow the same distribution mode. While, large capillary pores can be effectively characterized by the newly developed computer model, and the validity of this model has been proved by BSE imaging plus image analysis. Based on the experimental findings and numerical simulation, a hypothesis is proposed to explain the formation mechanism of the capillary pore system, and the realistic representation of the pore structure of hydrated cement paste is established.

  • Understanding the pore structure including pore shape and connectivity in unconventional reservoirs is essential to increase the recovery rate of unconventional energy resources such as shale gas and oil. In this study, we found analysis condition to probe the nanoscale pore structure in shale reservoirs using Focused Ion Beam (FIB) and Ion Milling System (IMS). A-068 core samples from Liard Basin are used to probe the pore structure in shale reservoirs. The pore structure is analyzed with different pretreatment methods and analysis condition because each sample has different characteristics. The results show that surface milling by FIB is effective to obtain pore images of several micrometers local area while milling a large-area by IMS is efficient to observe various pore structure in a short time. Especially, it was confirmed that the pore structure of rocks with high content of carbonate minerals and high strength can be observed with milling by IMS. In this study, the analysis condition and process for observing the pore structure in the shale reservoirs is established. Further studies are needed to perform for probing the effect of pore size and shape on the enhancement of shale gas recovery.

  • In this study, a flake-shaped metal powder was coated on a tube shaped pre-sintered 316L stainless steel support using a wet powder spraying process to fabricate a double pore structure, and the pore characteristics were analyzed according to coating time and tube rotation speed. The thickness of the coated layer was checked via optical microscopy, and porosity was measured using image analysis software. Air permeability was measured using a capillary flow porometer. As a result of the experiment, the optimal rotation speed of the support tube was established as 200 rpm. When the rotation speed was fixed, the coating thickness and the coating amount of the double pore structure increased as the coating time increased. The porosity of the double pore structure was increased due to the irregular arrangement of the flake-shaped powder. The air permeability of the double pore structure decreased with increasing fine pore layer thickness.

  • In case of high temperature damage such as fire, the durability of concrete is reduced due to the collapse of internal pore tissue. Therefore, in this paper, we are going to analyze the pore structure of cement paste hardening agent using MIP analysis and build up 3D data produced using X-ray CT tomography. The test specimen is made of cement paste from W/C 0.4. As the temperature of heating increased, the amount of air gap and the diameter of air gap in cement paste increased. It is judged that the air gap structure inside cement collapsed due to the evaporation of the hydrate, gel count, capillary water, etc. inside the cement due to the high temperature.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the changes of pore area and water vapour transport by the changes of moisture regain and fabric structure of wool fabrics, As specimens 4 worsted wool fabrics were used. The pore area were measured by image analysis method and dinamic vapour transport and water reisitance was determined by clothing-environment-body modelling system. The pore area was changed by the moisture regain of wool fabrics. The change of pore area was influenced by the yarn twist thread count and cover factor and the weave type. The water vapour transport was changed by the moisture regain. The change of water vapour transport was influenced by the change of pore aree which was determined by image analysis.

  • PURPOSES : In this study, an image analysis method is used to evaluate the pore structure characteristics and permeability of hybrid concrete. METHODS : The binder weight of hybrid concrete is set to $400kg/m^3$, $370kg/m^3$, and $350kg/m^3$, and for each value of binder weight, the pore structure and permeability of concrete mixture is evaluated. The permeability of hybrid concrete is evaluated using a rapid chloride penetration test(RCPT). RESULTS : The concrete pore structure characteristics of hybrid concrete reveals that as the binder weight is reduced, the entrained air is reduced and the entrapped air is increased. The permeability of the hybrid concrete for all values was measured to be below 1000 C, which indicates a "Very Low" level of permeability relative to the evaluation standard of KS F 2711. Additionally, as the binder weight is decreased, there is a significant increase in the permeability of chloride ions. CONCLUSIONS : In this study, the pore structure characteristics of hybrid concrete at different binder weights shows that as the binder weight is reduced, the entrained air is reduced and the entrapped air is increased. Consequently, chloride ion penetration resistance of the hybrid concrete is diminished. As a result, it is expected that this will reduce the concrete's durability.

  • Soil structure plays an important role in ecological system, since it controls transport and storage of air, gas, nutrients and solutions. The study of soil structure requires an understanding of the interrelations and interactions between the diverse soil components at various levels of organization. Investigations of the spatial distribution of pore/particle arrangements and the geometry of soil pore space can provide important information regarding ecological or crop system. Because of conveniences in image analyses and accuracy, these investigations have been thrived for a long time. Image analyses from soil sections through impregnated blocks of undisturbed soil (2 dimensional image analyses) or from 3 dimensional scanned soils by computer tomography allow quantitative assessment of the pore space. Image analysis techniques can be used to classify pore types and quantify pore structure without inaccurate or hard labor in laboratory. In this paper, the last 50 years of the soil image analyses have been presented and measurements on various soil scales were introduced, as well. In addition to history of image analyses, a couple of examples for soil image analyses were displayed. The discussion was made on the applications of image analyses and techniques to quantify pore/soil structure.

  • In this study, fundamental properties by pore structure and heat of microhydration test were determined. As a result of pore structure analysis, BS(AA) specimen showed showed the maximum peak value of significantly lower incremental intrusion than the maximum peak value of incremental intrusion at smaller pore size than that of BS. As a result of heat of microhydration test, the maximum heating value was in the order of OPC > BS > BS(AA), and initial drying shrinkage and compressive strength of BS(AA) were expected to be improved.
