  • This study was carried out to investigate the variations of dimension and exterior shape of vessel elements, morphology of spiral thickening and ray-vessel pit in korean diffuse-porous woods (56 species, 18 families), The tangential pore diameter and vessel element length was increased, whereas the pore number per unit area($1mm^2$) was decreased from pith outwards. The tangential pore diameter was decreased but the length of vessel element was not changed from earlywood to latewood within an annual ring. However, the dimensional variations of vessel element was not able to be recognized among relative positions in peripheral variation. The exterior shape of vessel element could be classified into four types; Type 1 is without tail, Type 2 with ligulate tail, Type 3 with broad taper tail and Type 4 with the very short length between perforations. The distribution frequency of Type 2 and 3 was relatively high in comparision with the others. According to the prominence, distribution position and branched shape, the spiral thickenings could be divided into five types. The spiral thickenings occurred 52% in the species observed. Thus it was doubtful to consider the simple presence of spiral thickening as diagnostic index in diffuse-porous woods. The morphology of ray-vessel pit could be grouped as reticulate, scalariform, oval, linear and coalescent type. Most of species examined showed oval and linear type.

  • Feeding apparatus, mechanism and passage of ingested prey were described for Nemopilema nomurai (Scyphozoa: Rhizostomeae). N. nomurai medusae without central mouths have developed complicated canal systems connecting the tip of the tentacle and oral arm to the gut cavity. The number of junctions in the canal system increases with the bell diameter. The prey is gathered by paralyzing nematocyst at the tentacles and by adhering cirri at the oral arms and scapulets. They are engulfed into the terminal pore located at the oral arms and scapulets, and entered into the gut cavity via the canal system. The estimated digestion time is 1 hour and 20 min. The diameter of terminal pore is always about 1 mm, implying that they could not eat prey larger than that pore size. On the other hand, ephyrae have central mouths and could swallow prey as large as adults could. Exploitation of the same size of food by adult and ephyra implies that N. nomurai can affect seriously the whole food web, massively ingesting micro- and mesozooplankton and cutting the energy transfer toward the higher level of carnivores.

  • Porous anodic aluminum oxide layer for nano templates was prepared in acidic solutions. In order to investigate effects of 2nd anodization on ordered formation behaviors of the porous oxide layers, electrochemical and microstructural studies were performed, primarily using TEM, FE- SEM, AFM, and Ultramicrotomy. The pore diameter of the anodic oxide layer increased approximately linearly with increasing voltages, and to the contrary, the pore density decreased. It was shown that 2nd anodizing on the cell base after dissolving 1st anodic oxide layer was remarkably effective for forming ordered array of the pores, comparing with the case for 1st anodization only. And for controlling the diameter of pores, widening method by chemical dissolution seemed more practical than by electrochemical methods.

  • The present paper reports the effect of precursor alumina particle size on pore structure and single gas permeation properties of tubular ${\alpha}$-alumina supports, prepared by a combined process of slip casting and sintering. Pore diameter of as-prepared ${\alpha}$-alumina support was highly dependent on precursor ${\alpha}$-alumina particle size. Although, increase in the precursor particle size increases the pore diameter, but the porosity of ${\alpha}$-alumina support mainly control by sintering temperature. Sintering studies reveal that as sintering temperature increased porosity of support decreased. Single gas permeance results indicate that permence is proportional to the square of pore diameter and linearly to porosity. These dependencies revealed that gas permeation trough as-prepared ${\alpha}$-alumina support was governed by viscous flow mechanism. The present announces that precursor ${\alpha}$-alumina particle size and sintering temperature are key parameters to control gas permeantion properties of ${\alpha}$-alumina supports.

  • Activated carbons were prepared from Youngwall coal by steam activation in this study. The feasibility of the Youngwall coal to commercial activated carbon was examined. The variation of pore structures and the development of porosity in activated carbons were investigated by changing activation conditions in batch type apparatus. The values of BET surface area and adsorption capacity of iodine and methylene blue of the resulting activated carbons were obtained as high as 1,000$m^2$m^2$$/g, 900mg/g, 150$m\ell$/g, respectively. Youngwall activated carbon prepared in this study showed much higher pore volume in pore diameter over 10 than that of commercial reference activated carbon(Ningxia Taihua ZJ-15C) produced from China anthracite.

  • Triaxial compression tests were run to study on the undrained strength characteristics of fiber mixed kaolin clay(Hadong). The influence of various test parameters such as amount and aspect ratio(ratio of length to diameter) of fiber, confining stress was also investigated. Test results showed that the increase in aspect ratio was increased in deviator stress at failure, but no effect on pore water pressure at failure. Deviator stress at failure was also increased at 0.5% mixing ratio(weight fraction of fiber to that of soil solid) of fiber but it was, thereafter, decreased and wits reached to constant after 2% mixing ratio. On the contrary, Pore water pressure at failure was increased as mixing ratio of fiber was greater than 1%. Deviator stress and pore water pressure of both clay and fiber mixed clay(FMC) at failure were increased as confining stress was increased. Deviator stress of FMC at failure was about 10% larger than that of clay, but pore water pressure of FMC at failure was almost similar to that of clay.

  • In case of high temperature damage such as fire, the durability of concrete is reduced due to the collapse of internal pore tissue. Therefore, in this paper, we are going to analyze the pore structure of cement paste hardening agent using MIP analysis and build up 3D data produced using X-ray CT tomography. The test specimen is made of cement paste from W/C 0.4. As the temperature of heating increased, the amount of air gap and the diameter of air gap in cement paste increased. It is judged that the air gap structure inside cement collapsed due to the evaporation of the hydrate, gel count, capillary water, etc. inside the cement due to the high temperature.

  • Crosslinked spherical polystyrene particles with a particle diameter of 200-500 ㎛ were synthesized by using suspension copolymerization of styrene and divinylbenzene, and the effect of divinylbenzene content, poreforming agent on their spherical formation, thermal stability, specific surface area, and carbonization characteristics were examined. The spherical copolymer beads were collapsed during carbonization up to 45% of divinylbenzene content. Toluene was used as pore-forming agent since it is more soluble in monomer phase rather than dispersion media during suspension polymerization, and the specific surface area and total pore volume increased with content of pore-forming agent.

  • The microstructure of vitreous bonded abrasives, which are used as the essential materials in the precise grinding, was investigated theoretically using two particle model. In this paper, a general equation applicable for a case in which there is a gap between abrasive grits is suggested. As a result, it was known that both the volume ratio of grit to glassy bond(V\ulcorner/V\ulcorner) and porosity(V\ulcorner) are the function of $\alpha$(the ratio of distance between grit to diameter of grit) and $\theta$(the angle from the center of pore to that of grit). Because the value $\alpha$ and $\theta$ can be get easily by using these suggested equations, the microstructure could be explained quantitatively. Also the raised error with the increasing amount of bond was modified by the simple assumption. As a result, in that case, both V\ulcorner/V\ulcorner and V\ulcorner were known to be the function of $\alpha$ and $\theta$(the ratio diameter of pore to that of grit).

  • AAO thin films prepared by a two-step anodization process have pores that are uniform in diameter, highly ordered, and perfectly vertical with respect to the plane of the nano template. Further, the pore size and interpore distance can be easily controlled by varying the anodizing voltage and acid electrolyte. When metals are electrochemically deposited in the pores, metal nanowires that are highly ordered and uniform in diameter are formed in each pore.
