Hardened cement-based materials exposed to the high temperatures of a fire are known to experience change in the pore structure as well as microstructural changes that affect their mechanical properties and tend to reduce their durability. In this experimental investigation, hardened Portland cement pastes were exposed to elevated temperatures of 200, 400, 600, 800, and $1000^{\circ}C$ for 60 minutes, and the resulting damage was studied by thermogravimetry (TG), mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) and density measurements. These results revealed that the residual compressive strength is increased at temperatures greater than $400^{\circ}C$ due to a small pore size of 3 nm and/or rehydration of the dehydrated cement paste. However, a loss of the residual strength occurs at temperatures exceeding 500 and $600^{\circ}C$. This can be attributed to the decomposition of hydrates such as portlandite and to an increase in the total porosity.

Nanoporous anodic alumina membranes (NAAM) with high aspect ratio, self-ordered pore array were fabricated by high-field 2-step anodization method. High voltages of 80, 100, 120 and 140 V as well as 40 V for comparison were applied to an aluminum anode with respect to a Pt cathode immersed both in 0.3M oxalic acid solution in order to investigate the self-ordering characteristics of the nanoporous structure. The pore structures, including interpore distance, pore size, pore density, and porosity as well as the ordering characteristic were analyzed using field-enhanced scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and the corresponding Fourier-transformed images. The nanoporous structure could be produced for all the voltage conditions, but the well-ordered through-hole pore without a branched structure seemed to occur only at 40 and 140 V. It turned out that the growth rate under 140 V high-field anodization was about 40 times higher than under conventional 40 V mild anodization, which enabled the fast fabrication of self-ordered, high aspect ratio NAAMs.

In order to investigate the significance of "salting-out" and "pore swelling" effects on the nanofiltration of neutral solutes, rejection properties of two NF ceramic and polymeric membranes were studied with single polyethyleneglycol (PEG) solution and mixed PEG/inorganic electrolyte solutions. For both membranes, the rejection rate of PEG was found to decrease significantly in the presence of ions. In the case of the ceramic membrane (rigid pores), this phenomenon was imputed to the sole partial dehydration of PEG molecules induced by the surrounding ions. This assumption was confirmed by the lowering of the PEG rejection rates which followed the Hofmeister series. Experimental data were used to compute the resulting decrease in the Stokes radius of PEG molecules in the presence of the various salts. Concerning the polymeric membrane, the decrease in the rejection rate was found to be systematically higher than for the ceramic membrane. The additional decrease was then ascribed to the swelling of the pores. The experimental data of rejection rates were then used to compute the variation in the mean pore radius in the presence of the various salts. The pore swelling phenomenon due to accumulation of counterions inside pores was supported by electrokinetic charge density measurements.

The corrosion inhibitive effect of a new hydrazone-based heterocyclic compound for steel in simulated concrete pore solution with 3.5 wt.% sodium chloride was investigated by experimental and computational techniques. Electrochemical studies, up to 30 days of immersion, and surface analysis (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and scanning electron microscope (SEM)) were performed to assess the corrosion protection abilities of investigated compound for steel rebar. Results showed that adding the organic compound to the chloride contaminated concrete pore solution decreased the corrosion rate of the steel rebar thanks to the effective adsorption of inhibitor molecules. After 30 days of immersion of steel rebar in inhibited chloride contaminated synthetic concrete pore solution, the inhibition efficiency exceeded 80% at low concentration of 1 mmol/L. Computational studies by Density Functional based Tight Binding (DFTB) method revealed the formation of covalent bonds between the hydrazone molecule and the iron surface.

Paper coating can give smoothness surface and good printability to uncoated paper. Macro roughness of base paper would be decreasing its groove and grit in view of side. Nevertheless its improving effect for paper, some kind of problem is showing in the fine coated paper. Especially, back trap mottle is one of serious problems in printing with fine coated paper. Printers can not adjust conditions to overcome the problem. Also large amounts of paper can be rejected. There are many factors that influence back trap mottle. However it is not clear what the important parameters are in back trap mottle. Back trap mottle has some relationship with ink setting but good guidelines are not clear. Back trap mottle has been linked to non-uniform ink setting. We do not know how much variation in setting we can tolerate. Other mottle issues such as micro-picking and ink refusal are still common. This paper was prepared to identify correlation with ink setting and delta ink density obtained from experiment and then tried to find out some relationships with ink setting and back trap mottle. Basically fine calcium carbonate and ciay was used for main components and coarse calcium carbonate was mixed in two fine pigments to change its porosity and ink acceptance. Micro ink tack force at KRK printing tester was adapted to measure ink setting rate. KRK units were used for back trap mottle simulation and two printed samples were prepared to check delta ink density. Clay base coating has more fast ink setting time than calcium carbonate's though smoothness of clay was better than calcium carbonate. It could be explained by that clay has finer pore in its coating than calcium carbonate. DID(delta ink density) has shown a good correlation with ink setting time from micro ink tack. The total pore volume of coating layer did not match with ink setting and DID. From the results we might conclude coating that has fine pore size around 0.05 ${\mu}m$ can be exposed to high possibility of back trap mottle.

Triaxial compression tests were performed with control of vertical stress, confined pressure(${\sigma}_H$), and injection velocity by means of impervious soil samples with a different grain size, density and grout density. By measuring pore water pressure at the time of vertical fracturing around the bore-hole, relationships between main factors are described, and the factors are pore water pressure, confined pressure, vertical fracturing injection pressure(${\sigma}$) and the tension strength(${\sigma}_t$). The hydraulic fracturing of soft clay was occurred at the pressure which was less than the pressure obtained by the theory of elasticity. It was found that the above result was the influence of pore water pressure due to injection pressure($U_a$) and pore water pressure due to confined pressure($U_i$). Therefore, the vertical injection pressure at the time of fracturing needs to be changed as follows. $${\sigma}=2{\cdot}{{\sigma}_H}-(U_a+U_i)+{\sigma}_t$$.
Porous $Al_2O_3-(m-ZrO_2)$ composites were fabricated by pressureless sintering, using different volume percentages (40% - 60%) of poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA) powders as a pore-forming agent. The pore-forming agent was successfully removed, and the pore size and shape were well-controlled during the burn-out and sintering processes. The average pore size in the porous $Al_2O_3-(m-ZrO_2)$ bodies was about $200\;{\mu}m$ in diameter. The values of relative density, bending strength, hardness, and elastic modulus decreased as the PMMA content increased; i.e., in the porous body (sintered at $1500^{\circ}C$) using 55 vol % PMMA, their values were about 50.8%, 29.8 MPa, 266.4 Hv, and 6.4 GPa, respectively. To make the $Al_2O_3-(m-ZrO_2)$/polymer hybrid composites, a bioactive polymer, such as PMMA, was infiltrated into the porous $Al_2O_3-(m-ZrO_2)$ composites. After infiltration, most of the pores in the porous $Al_2O_3-(m-ZrO_2)$ composites, which were made using 60 vol % PMMA additions, were infiltrated with PMMA, and their values of relative density, bending strength, hardness, and elastic modulus remarkably increased.
Porous silicon films are electrochemically etched from crystalline silicon wafers in an aqueous solution of hydrofluoric acid(HF). Careful control of etching conditions (current density, etch time, HF concentration) provides films with precise, reproducible physical parameters (morphology, porosity and thickness). The etched pattern could be varied due to (1) current density controls pore size (2) etching time determines depth and (3) complex layered structures can be made using different current profiles (square wave, triangle, sinusoidal etc.). The optical interference spectrum from Fabry-Perot layer has been used for forensic applications, where changes in the optical reflectivity spectrum confirm the identity. We will explore a method of identifying the specific pattern code and can be used for identities of individual code with porous silicon based encoded nanosized smart particles.
In this research, the effects of the gravel content on the liquefaction behavior for both of the isotropically and $K_0-anisotropically$ consolidated gravel-sand mixtures are investigated. for this purpose, the cyclic triaxial tests for the specimens with the same relative density (Dr=40%) and variations of gravel content were performed. On the other hand, a series of undrained cyclic triaxial tests were carried out on the isotropically consolidated gravel-sand mixtures with the same void ratio (e=0.7) and from 0% to 30% gravel contents. Void ratios of gravel-sand mixtures with the same relative density (Dr=40%) are found to decrease significantly with the increase of the gravel content from 0% to about 70% and increase thereafter. But the void ratio of the sand matrix among the gravel skeleton increases with the increase of the gravel contents. Test results are as follows : for the isotropically consolidated specimen with 40% of relative density and low gavel contents (GC=0%, 20%, 40%), pore water pressure development and axial strain behavior during undrained cyclic loading show similar behavior to those of the loose sand because of high void ratio, and the specimens with high gravel content (70%) both pore pressure and strata behaviors are similar to those of dense sand. And the isotropically consolidated specimens with the same void ratio (e=0.7) and higher gravel contents show the same behavior of pore water pressure and axial strain as that of the loose sand, but for the lower gravel content this behavior shows similar behavior to that of dense sand. The liquefaction strength of the isotropically consolidated specimens with the same relative density increases with gravel content up to 70%, and the strength decreases with the increase of the gravel content at the same void ratio. Thus, it is confirmed that the liquefaction strength of the gravel-sand mixtures depends both on relative density and void ratio of the whole mixture rather than the relative density of the sand matrix filled among gravels. On the other hand, the behavior of pore water pressure and axial strain for the $K_0-anisotropically$ consolidated gravel-sand mixtures shows almost the same cyclic behavior of the sand with no stress reversal even with some stress reversal of the cyclic loading. Namely, even the stress reversal of about 10% of cyclic stress amplitude, the permanent strain with small cyclic strain increases rapidly with the number of cycles, and the initial liquefaction does not occur always with less than maximum pore water pressure ratio of 1.0. The liquefaction resistance increases with the gravel contents between 0% and 40%, but tends to decrease beyond 40% of gravel content. In conclusion, the cyclic behavior of gravel-sand mixtures depends on factors such as gravel content, void ratio, relative density and consolidation condition.
A series of foamed plastic sheets containing biomass (as HMR container) were developed via different foaming process temperatures, and their density, porosity, WVTR, and pore morphology were evaluated. Thermal stability of samples during re-heating the food in oven, change in morphology, density, porosity, and WVTR were investigated using a simulated thermal shock process according to MIL-STD-883E assay. As such, the pore size of samples was generally increased with increasing temperature of the foaming process. It can be explained that as foaming temperature increased, the viscosity of molten resins and the repulsive force against pore expansion decreased. In addition, an increase in the thermal shock cycle reduced the pore size and WVTR, while density increased because high temperature treatment that softened the sheet matrix was followed by a low temperature incubation, which contracted the matrix, thereby changing the physical and morphological properties of samples. However, an insignificant change in density was observed and WVTR tended to be decreased, indicating that as-prepared foamed plastic sheets could be used as a high thermal stable container for HMR application. Therefore, it found that the properties of newly developed HMR containers containing biomass were dependent on the foaming process temperature. Moreover, to better understanding of these newly developed containers, further investigations dealing with foaming process temperature based on various food items and cooking conditions are needed.
