Diatomite, bentonite and zeolite were used as porous materials for fabricating hygroscopic panels. Moisture adsorption and desorption of porous materials were investigated and hydrothermal method was applied to fabricate panels. Cheolwon diatomite and Pohang zeolite showed excellent characteristics of moisture adsorption and desorption. These characteristics were caused by higher surface area and pore volume of porous materials. Moisture adsorption contents were influenced by surface area and pore volume of panels, and surface area more effected on moisture adsorption. Moisture adsorption content of panel with 10% Pohang zeolite was 180g/m$^2$and that of 10% Cheolwon diatomite was 170g/m$^2$. Moisture desorption content of panel with 10% Pohang zeolite was 105g/m$^2$. Moisture adsorption contents of panel with porous materials were higher than that of panel without porous materials.

Poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene), PVDF-HFP, hollow fiber membranes were prepared by the dry/wet spinning technique using different polyethylene glycol (PEG) concentrations as non-solvent additive in the dope solution. Two different PEG concentrations (3 and 5 wt.%). The morphology and structural characteristics of the hollow fiber membranes were studied by means of optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM) and void volume fraction. The experimental permeate flux and the salt (NaCl) rejection factor were determined using direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) process. An increase of the PEG content in the spinning solution resulted in a faster coagulation of the PVDF-HFP copolymer and a transition of the cross-section internal layer structure from a sponge-type structure to a finger-type structure. Pore size, nodule size and roughness parameters of both the internal and external hollow fiber surfaces were determined by AFM. It was observed that both the pore size and roughness of the internal surface of the hollow fibers enhanced with increasing the PEG concentration, whereas no change was observed at the outer surface. The void volume fraction increased with the increase of the PEG content in the spinning solution resulting in a higher DCMD flux and a smaller salt rejection factor.
Simultaneous removal of heavy metals (Cd, Pb) and diesel-fuel from a soil column was evaluated by respectively flushing with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) solution, mixture of SDS and sodium iodide (SDS + NaI), and surfactant foam (SDS + NaI foam). First, this study evaluated these flushing methods to the heavy metals only-contaminated soil for removal of heavy metals from the heavy-metal only contaminated soil column. After 7 pore volume flushing of the soil column, Cd removal efficiencies from the soil were 40% by SDS solution, 50% by SDS + NaI mixture, and 60% by surfactant foam. The flushing results implied that anionic surfactant and ligand can be efficiently applied to extraction of Cd from the heavy metal contaminated soil. Furthermore, surfactant foam flushing showed an increased flushing efficiency with enhancing the contact between surfactant solution and soil. However, Pb removal efficiency by these flushing methods did not show any difference unlike those of Cd. Second, this study eventually evaluated flushing methods for simultaneous removal of heavy metals and diesel-fuel from the soil column with 7 pore volume flushing. Diesel-fuel removal efficiencies were 50% by SDS + NaI flushing and 90% by SDS + NaI foam flushing. Cd removal efficiency by the foam flushing reached to 80% which was higher than the result of the previous heavy metals onlycontaminated soil experiment. This result implied that diesel-fuel could act as a metal-solvent while it contacted to heavy metals present in the soil. This study clearly showed that surfactant foam flushing simultaneously removed heavy metals and diesel fuel from the soil column.

In order to investigate stabilization effect and sustainability on As-contaminated farmland soils which were affected the abandoned mine site and stabilized by zerovalent iron(ZVI) and industrial by-products, batch-scale and pilot-scale tests were carried out. In batch tests, ZVI and industrial by-products(blast furnace slag, steel refining slag and oyster shell powder) were used in treatment materials to reduce the As leaching. Industrial by-products were mixed with As-contaminated soils, in the ratio of 1%, 3%, 5% and 7% on the weight base of dried soil. The results of batch-scale tests was shown that the reduction of As concentration was observed in all samples and it was expected that ZVI and steel refining slag were more effective than other treatment materials to stabilize As compounds. In pilot-scale tests, columns were filled with untreated soils and treated soils mixed with ZVI and steel refining slag in the same mixing ratio of 3%. Distilled water was discharged into the columns with the velocity of 0.3 pore volume/day. During the test, pH, EC, Eh and As concentration were measured in the regular term(1pore volume). after six months, pilot-scale tests were retested to investigate sustainability of treatment materials. As a result, It was shown that the leachate from control column was continuously released during the test period and its concentration was greater than $100ug{\cdot}L^{-1}$ which was exceeded the national regulation of water discharged to river or stream ($50ug{\cdot}L^{-1}$). On the other hand, soil treated with ZVI and steel refining slag showed that the concentrations of leachate were lower than national regulation of water discharged to river or stream. Therefore it was expected that ZVI and steel refining slag could be applied to the farmland site as the alternative treatment materials.

Amorphous $MnO_{2}{\cdot}nH_{2}O$ in 1M KOH aqueous electrolyte proves to be an excellent electrode for a faradic electrochemical capacitor cycled between -0.5 and +1.0 versus Ag/AgCl. The effect of thermal treatment on the crystalinity, particle structure, and corresponding electrochemical properties of the resulting xerogel remained amorphous as Mn(OH)2 up to 160$^{\circ}C$. With an increase in the temperature above 200$^{\circ}C$, both the surface area and pore volume decreased sharply, because the amorphous Mn(OH)2 decomposed to form MnO that was subsequently oxidized to form crystalline Mn3O4. In addition, the changes in the crystallinity, and particle structure all had significant but coupled effects on the electrochemical properties of the xerogels. A maximum capacitance of 160.6F/g was obtained for an electrode prepared with the MnOx Xerogel calcined at 150$^{\circ}C$, which was consistent with the maxima exhibited in both the surface area and pore volume. This capacitance was attributed solely to a surface redox mechanism.
The possibility of NAPL removal from contaminated soil was studied using the steam injection technique. Both single (octane, toluene and xylene) and composite NAPL (gasoline) were used as contaminant. Soils used in this study were Chumunjin fine sand and weathered granitic soil, both of which are commonly found in Korea. Experimental results showed that with 1 pore volume steam injection, the NAPL removal rate was in the range of 66∼78% for sand and 45∼73% for weathered granitic soil. The steam injection technique seems to have high potential for soil remediation with advantages of relatively short operating time and no side-effect. Rise in the background temperature led to the delay of steam condensation and the increase of NAPL mobility, which resulted in the improvement of removal efficiency. In addition, water flooding after steam injection turned out to be a very efficient way of removing NAPL residual in the soil pores.

Marine concrete structure is exposed to salt injury and deteriorated by steel corrosion due to chloride ions diffusion. It, therefore, is very important to estimate the chloride diffusivity in concrete. In this paper the compressive strength and permeable pore volume of concrete are measured and the diffusion coefficient and penetration depth of chloride ions in concrete were investigated to estimate the chloride diffusivity efficiently. To correlate these results each other, regression analysis was done. The results showed a good linear relation between chloride diffusivity and the fundamental properties of concrete and the chloride diffusivity of concrete with water-cement ratios of $40%{\sim}60%$ were about $2.5{\sim}6.6{\times}10^{-12}m^2/s$.
To improve the performance of carbon nanofibers as electrode material in electrical double-layer capacitors (EDLCs), we prepare three types of samples with different pore control by electrospinning. The speciments display different surface structures, melting behavior, and electrochemical performance according to the process. Carbon nanofibers with two complex treatment processes show improved performance over the other samples. The mesoporous carbon nanofibers (sample C), which have the optimal conditions, have a high sepecific surface area of $696m^2g^{-1}$, a high average pore diameter of 6.28 nm, and a high mesopore volume ratio of 87.1%. In addition, the electrochemical properties have a high specific capacitance of $110.1F\;g^{-1}$ at a current density of $0.1A\;g^{-1}$ and an excellent cycling stability of 84.8% after 3,000 cycles at a current density of $0.1A\;g^{-1}$. Thus, we explain the improved electrochemical performance by the higher reaction area due to an increased surface area and a faster diffusion path due to the increased volume fraction of the mesopores. Consequently, the mesoporous carbon nanofibers are demonstrated to be a very promising material for use as electrode materials of high-performance EDLCs.
In this study, a series of experiments were carried out to remove total petroleum hydrocarbon(TPH) and toluene by soil flushing. In batch experiments, Triton X-100 and SWA 1503 showed TPH removal efficiency of 79.0% and 69.0%, respectively. Although the TPH removal efficiency increased as the surfactant was increased in the concentration range 1-11mmol/L, the optimum concentration was 1mmol/L, considering the ratio of the removal efficiency to the amount of surfactant injected. In column experiment, the optimal velocity was 0.3mL/min. The physical aquifer model(PAM) result revealed that the soil flushing removed as much as 5.5% of the toluene under 3 pore volume(PV) conditions. To improve the soil flushing efficiency, it is necessary to find optimal condition through recirculation or reuse of surfactant.
This research was to investigate the adsorption characteristics of charcoals of major Korean wood species (thinned trees) and wood-based materials. As carbonization time and temperature increased, methylene-blue adsorption (MBA) of charcoals of thinned trees and wood-based materials increased. Pinus koraiensis charcoal showed the highest MBA. MBA of softwoods was higher than that of hardwoods. There was a negative correlation between air-dried specific gravity before carbonization and MBA of carbonized thinned trees. The MBA of wood-based materials showed similar value, but wood-based materials in MBA was lower than thinned woods. Surface area and total pore volume of thinned trees and wood-based materials increased as carbonization temperature increased. The species showing highest MBA appeared to have the highest surface area at the carbonization temperature of 600℃ as well. There was a positive correlation between surface area, total pore volume and MBA of charcoals. The charcoal of wood-based materials generally exhibited micro pores.
