  • Sodium silicate based silica aerogels are lower in cost than silica alkoxide based silica aerogels, but the demand is decreasing as their physical properties are lowered. In this research, acetonitrile as a drying control chemical additive (DCCA) is added in the sol state to improve the pore-structural properties of sodium silicate based silica aerogel by preventing the agglomeration of particles and cross-linked bond. The sodium silicate based silica aerogel by ambient pressure drying were prepared by sol-gel process. Acetonitrile/$Na_2SiO_3$ molar ratio of 0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.15, and 0.2 was added to the sol state. The physical properties of the final product were analyzed using Fourier transform infrared, contact angle measurement, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller and Barrett-Joyner-Halenda measurements and field emission scanning electron microscopy. It was confirmed that the sample with adding 0.15 molar ratio of acetonitrile and sodium silicate showed a high specific surface area ($577m^2/g$), a high pore volume (3.29 cc/g), and a high porosity (93%) comparable to the pore-structural properties of silica alkoxide based silica aerogels.

  • The effects of biological pretreatment on the Japanese red pine Pinus densiflora, was evaluated after exposure to three white rot fungi Ceriporia lacerata, Stereum hirsutum, and Polyporus brumalis. Change in chemical composition, structural modification, and their susceptibility to enzymatic saccharification in the degraded wood were analyzed. Of the three white rot fungi tested, S. hirsutum selectively degraded the lignin of this sortwood rather than the holocellulose component. After eight weeks of pretreatment with S. hirsutum, total weight loss was 10.7%, while lignin loss was the highest at 14.52% among the tested samples. However, holocellulose loss was lower at 7.81 % compared to those of C. lacerata and P. brumalis. Extracelluar enzymes from S. hirsutum showed higher activity of ligninase and lower activity of cellulase than those from other white rot fungi. Thus, total weight loss and changes in chemical composition of the Japanese red pine was well correlated with the enzyme activities related with lignin- and cellulose degradation in these fungi. Based on the data obtained from analysis of physical characterization of degraded wood by X-ray Diffractometry (XRD) and pore size distribution, S. hirsutum was considered as an effective potential fungus for biological pretreatment. In particular, the increase of available pore size of over 120 nm in pretreated wood powder with S. hirsutum made enzymes accessible for further enzymatic saccharification. When Japanese red pine chips treated with S. hirsutum were enzymatically saccharified using commercial enzymes (Cellulclast 1.5 L and Novozyme 188), sugar yield was greatly increased (21.01 %) compared to non-pre treated control samples, indicating that white rot fungus S. hirsutum provides an effective process in increasing sugar yield from woody biomass.

  • Porous structures of aluminum foam have been studied by using return aluminum scrap. The apparent foam shape, foam height, density, pore size and their distributions in various section areas of the experimental samples have been investigated. The sample have been cast into metallic mold, using aluminum foam prepared from a precursor based on pure Al ingot and return aluminum scrap mixed with various amounts of 1-2wt% increasing viscosity and foam agent materials. The process provides for flexibility in design of foam structures via relatively easy control over the amount of hydrogen evolution and the drainage processes which occur during foam formation. This is facilitated by manipulating parameters such as the foaming agent, thermal histories during solidification and mix melt viscosities. A metal for producing the foamed are decomposing a foaming agent in a molten metal such that there is an initial and a subsequent expansion due to foaming agent. It has been found that the Al porous foaming with variation amount of 1∼2wt% foam agent and at 2min holding time, which melting temperature has appeared homogeneous pore size at 650∼700$^{\circ}C$. The compression strength were 10-13 kg/min at 125ppi, and increased by higher pore density. The acoustical performance of the panel made with the foamed aluminum is considerably improved; its absorption coefficient shows NRC 0.6-0.8. It has been found that the Al foam is very preferable for the compactness of the thermal system.

  • A new technique is presented to detect unstable slope behavior, based on Hotelling's T2 analysis of pore pressure and water content obtained during flume tests using granitic and gneissic weathered soils. Three sets of pore pressure-water content values were simultaneously obtained during each test, and T2 statistics at the 90.0% and 95.0% confidence levels were calculated based on the correlations between values. The results show that unsuccessful detection of some local failures of the flume slope depended on the sensor position. In the case of global slope failures, anomalous behavior was detected between several hundred and several thousand seconds before the event as T2 statistics exceeded the confidence interval 90%. Hotelling's T2 analysis provides a single control criterion because it enables correlations between diverse measured values within the same slope; the criterion also includes stepwise criteria for a forecasting and warning system based on confidence levels.

  • Hybrid process of thermally-induced phase separation and stretching was developed for the preparation of microporous polypropylene hollow fiber membranes. Precursor for stretching was prepared by using soybean oil as a diluent and benzoic acid as a nucleating agent far the sphenlite control and it was stretched far the micrporous hollow fiber membrane. The effects of stretching ratio and deformation rate for stretching process were investigated. Increase of stretching ratio resulted in the greater pore size with nonuniform size distribution. Higher deformation rate also increaser the pore size with uniform size distribution. Stretching ratio was closely related with the orientation of polymer chain and increased the mechanical strength of the fiber. Increase of deformation rate had little effects on the orientation of crystalline phase, and decreased the orientation of amorphous phase which caused the decrease of tensile strength of the fiber and broke the micro-fibrils connecting spherulites to form a circular pore shape.

  • In order to control the micro-pore structure of glassy carbon (GC), an activation agent of KOH was introduced as the glassy carbon was prepared from phenolic resin with a curing agent of phosphoric acid. The yield and properties of GC were investigated as a function of KOH content. Although the GC produced without KOH had nonporous structure except the trace of bubble formation, the GC with KOH had very porous structure. The surface area of GC with KOH increased continuously up to 870 $m^2$/g with the increase of KOH content. The carbonization yield and apparent density measured in water reduced from 40 to 15% and iron 1.5 to 0.9 g/$cm^3$, respectively, and the electrical resistivity increased from $50{\times}10^{-4}$ to $60{\times}10^{-4}$$\Omega$.cm with the increase of KOH content.

  • The purpose of this study is to manufacture a variable density - hybrid lattice structure control by filling the pore of the metal addictive manufactured lattice structure with lightweight reactive acrylic compounds(RAC). To apply the variable density - hybrid lattice structure to the construction industry, the enhancing adhesion - reactive acrylic compounds(EA-RAC) which increased the adhesion strength was manufactured by adding ordinary portland cement to the RAC. Finally, the EA-RAC was filled into the lattice structure to test the specific density, water absorption, and adhesion strength of the variable density - hybrid lattice structure. The results were obtained with density controllable, water absorption less than 1.0%, and 1-day bonding strength of 1.78 MPa to 1.98 MPa.

  • The experiments were carried out to investigate a practical method for controlling wilt of strawberry by fungicides in vitro and in field. Captafol and benomyl were the most effective in inhibiting chlamydos-pore germination and mycelial growth of the fungi. In field tests, captafol, benomyl and thiophanate-methyl showed some control effect against the disease. The propagule number of F. oxysporum f. sp. fragariae in soil was greatly reduced by soil drenches of captabol, whereas that of Trichoderma sp. was increased.
