Analysis of Biotope Area Ratio in the Environmental Impact Statements (환경영향평가서에 나타난 개발사업의 생태면적률 검토 연구)

  • Tendency in ratio of biotope area of environmental impact assessment (EIA) according to population, location, project type, and total project area was analyzed by type of the projects. According to EIA, biotope area ratio is the ratio of the weighted biotope areas and total project area. biotope area is important to resident's health and quality of their life. Ministry of Environment recommends to meet the biotope area ratio standard presented by each project type. The analysis is based on 4 types of project, urban development, industrial comlpex deveopment, tourism development, and waste and sewerage treatment facility, and 55 data extracted from them. It is needed that new standard that the population is reflected, adjustment that region and frequency are considered, and regulation strengthening according to achievement of 'the minimum achievable goals' to improve biotope area policy. The research includes more data and improvements of specific system are needed as a further research.

CACNA1A Gene Polymorphism is Associated with Hypertension in Korean Population

  • High blood pressure (BP) is the most frequent risk factor among metabolic syndrome components. The control of hypertension is very important to prevent the cardiovascular risk in metabolic syndrome. The dysfunction of calcium channel is responsible in the regulation of the vascular muscle contribution to hypertension. Calcium channel, voltage-dependent, P/Q type, alpha-1A subunit (CACNA1A) gene is located in brain and known to control the intracranial hypertension. In this study, we investigate whether the polymorphisms of CACNA1A gene is associated with hypertension. The 49 CACNA1A genotypes were determined using the Affymetrix Genotyping chip array in 92 hypertension and 279 control individuals from a Korean population. Logistic and multiple regression models were employed to analyze the genetic contributions of polymorphisms. Out of 49 polymorphisms, six SNPs (rs12611029, rs16035, rs7259944, rs10419472, rs17777900, and rs4926294) showed a significant association with hypertension in three alternative models (codominant, dominant, and recessive models; P<0.05 after adjusting for age and sex). Our results suggest that the CACNA1A gene may be associated with hypertension in the Korean population.

Single Nucleotide Polymorph isms of a 16 kb Region on Human Chromosome 11 p15.5 that Includes the H19 Gene

  • The H19 gene, located at human chromosome 11p15.5, is imprinted in most normal human tissues. However, imprinting is often lost in tumors suggesting H19 is a putative tumor suppressor. We analyzed the single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of a 16 kb region that includes the H19 gene and its imprinting control region (ICR) in the Korean population. To identify SNPs, we directly sequenced this region in 18 Korean subjects. We identified 64 SNPs, of which 7 were in the exons of H19, 2 were in the introns, 14 were in the 3' intergenic region and 41 were in the 5' intergenic region. Of the 64 SNPs, 21 had not previously been reported and thus appear to be unique to the Korean population. The identified SNPs of H19 in the Korean population may eventually be useful as genetic markers associated with various diseases. In this study, 7 of the 64 identified SNPs were at CTCF binding sites in the ICR and may affect regulation of H19 gene imprinting. Thus, several genetic variations of the H19 gene may be important markers in human diseases that involve genomic imprinting, including cancer.

Analysis of Monocyte Chemoattractant Protein 1(MCP-1) Polymorphism in Korean Patients with Asthma (한국인 천식환자의 Monocyte chemoattractant protein 1(MCP-1) 유전자 다형성에 대한 분석)

  • Background : Monocyte chemoattractant protein-1(MCP-1), one of the CC chemokines, appears to play a significant role in asthma pathogenesis. It was reported that polymorphism in the MCP-1(-2518 A/G promoter) was associated with asthma in Caucasians, but the association of this polymorphism and asthma patients in the Korean population has not yet been clarified. Objective : We investigated the possible association between 2 polymorphisms (-2518 A/G promoter and Cys35Cys) and asthma patients in a Korean population. Materials and Methods : DNA samples were obtained from 86 Korean asthma patients and 270 healthy controls. MCP-1 genomic variants (-2518 A/G promoter and Cys35Cys polymorphism) were detected by PCR-RFLP. Level of MCP-1 was measured by ELISA for each genotype (n=8) (AA, AG, GG) and allele types of -2518 A/G promoter polymorphism for control subjects. Results : The Cys35Cys polymorphism was associated with asthma patients in Korean population [genotype distribution ($X^{2}=16.011$, P<0.001)]. Comparison of the two groups revealed no detectable differences in genotype and allele frequencies of the -2518 A/G polymorphism. Haplotype frequencies analysis revealed significant difference $(X^{2}=51.70$, P<0.001). MCP-1 serum level of subjects with G genotype of -2518 A/G promoter polymorphism was statistically higher than that with AA genotype (P<0.05). Conclusion : Our data indicate that no association exists between the MCP-1 -2518 A/G polymorphism and asthma susceptibility in the Korean population. However, it is noteworthy that the high prevalence of the -2518 G allele in the Korean population suggests a potentially important ethnic variation in the regulation of MCP-1 production. This variation must be considered in gene-association studies in different ethnic populations.

  • Many of urban parks which have been designated for urban planning regulation are not well developed because the priority of investment is inferior to that of other public facilities. Park development is an urgent urban policy and it is hard to decide priority among parks. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate the priority of park development. Thus the Analytic Hierarchy Process has been introduced because it is suitable for achieving objectivity by collecting the professional opinions. The goals of park development are evaluated by AHP method and the priorities among goals are conservation of natural environment, satisfying the residents' residents' needs, population density, regional pollution, land acquisition cost, ratio of greeneries and facilities within park areas. Priority of park development is decided by the standardization of each individual inventory data and considering of the professional opinions. Among the multi-attribute judgement methods, AHP method may be the most widely used. Despite the critical evaluations of the AHP, such as limitation of the nine-point scale and the rank reversal problem, application of AHP to decide the priority of park development is suitable for actual circumstances.

Rhizosphere Communication: Quorum Sensing by the Rhizobia

  • Rhizobium and related genera are soil bacteria with great metabolic plasticity. These microorganisms survive in many different environments and are capable of eliciting the formation of nitrogen-fixing nodules on legumes. The successful establishment of symbiosis is precisely regulated and requires a series of signal exchanges between the two partners. Quorum sensing (QS) is a prevalent form of population density-dependent gene regulation. Recently, increasing evidence indicates that rhizobial quorum sensing provides a pervasive regulatory network, which plays a more generalized role in the physiological activity of free-living rhizobia, as well as during symbiosis. Several rhizobia utilize multiple, overlapping quorum sensing systems to regulate diverse properties, including conjugal transfer and copy number control of plasmids, exopolysaccharide biosynthesis, rhizosphere-related functions, and cell growth. Genomic and proteomic analyses have begun to reveal the wide range of functions under quorum-sensing control.

  • Although the growth of structure, as traced by galaxy clusters, has been extensively studied through cosmological simulations and large-scale surveys, the early formation and evolution of their galaxy content, and its relation to the transformation of the host environment, are still somewhat poorly understood. This is particularly true of the processes that give rise to the quiescent galaxy population between z=3 and z=2. Recent discoveries at z~2 are now bridging the gap between the well-established massive clusters of the last 9 Gyr and the high-redshift universe, and new datasets are now giving us access to statistical populations of intermediate-mass structures at this epoch. I will discuss the properties of quiescent galaxies in the most distant confirmed X-ray detected galaxy clusters, their implications for galaxy quenching at high-redshift as well as the regulation of star formation at group scales at z~2.

Understanding Disease Susceptibility through Population Genomics

  • Genetic epidemiology studies have established that the natural variation of gene expression profiles is heritable and has genetic bases. A number of proximal and remote DNA variations, known as expression quantitative trait loci (eQTLs), that are associated with the expression phenotypes have been identified, first in Epstein-Barr virus-transformed lymphoblastoid cell lines and later expanded to other cell and tissue types. Integration of the eQTL information and the network analysis of transcription modules may lead to a better understanding of gene expression regulation. As these network modules have relevance to biological or disease pathways, these findings may be useful in predicting disease susceptibility.

A Comparative Study on the Development Cases of Relocated Urban Sites at Home and Abroad (국내.외 이전적지 활용 사례에 관한 비교연구)

  • In recent years, the change of urban function and the decrease in birth rate have given rise to merge, abolition and relocation of the existing building in cities. This study explores the possibilities for various land utilizations of relocated urban sites. In doing so, it compares the development methods and the utilization pattern between home and abroad. It analyses the land use categories and the development methodologies of 4 relocated urban sites happened in Seoul and 4 foreign sites. In addition, it analyzes the land utilization after relocation, development principals, area, building usage and changes in land use regulation. Finally, it proposes the directions for developing relocated site and each of roles among the parties concerned. This study concludes that it is available to exploit the relocated urban sites by the variety of development methodologies, especially in a metropolis like Seoul.
